Absolutely. Nolan is the genius for conceiving of it all, but don't forget the virtuoso voice acting of Bill Irwin. If ANY other actor played TARS it wouldn't have been as perfect as it is.
what i like about films like this is that they show future technology that feels like it isnt shiny and new in that timeline but has been well worn and used which helps to make it feel real. TARS and CASE look old and rickety like they've been beaten up and clunky rather than sleek which helps to make them seem more real as a piece of technology that could exist rather than something completely fantastical
I really like that part as it shows how the robots are processing language purely as machines. Picking from pre-sampled phrases. And perhaps applying inflection on demand.
"CASE, you ready?""Affirmative, I have an efficient amount of human slaves to build my robot city.""CASE, what's your sense of humor set at?""78%""Let's notch it down to 65%" "Confirmed."
Oh I love Tars et Case. (Funny how they make the word tesseract) Actually all digital voices in Interstellars were all very comfortable and friendly. When Dr. Mann tried to override the docking procedure, the computer says "unauthorised" in a very calm and friendly manner.
I appreciated that so much because the treacherous robot trope is overplayed. And I feel they let us feel suspicious towards them on purpose. In the scene where TARS is trying to reboot the unit KIPP, you just know something is off, it really seemed like he was gonna do something. But then it's the human that betrays them.
@@GrayCatbird1 _"the treacherous robot trope is overplayed."_ Agreed. Most film-makers seem to be Neo-Luddites & hate technology. I don't know why we think they deserve our attention, lets listen to experts in the respective fields instead.
I just love, love, love these robots. The entire concept of them being rectangles that can change shape, hinge in different places and move in many different ways is just so imaginative. I wish that we had seen more of them in the film.
The methods of locomotion they designed for these things is so fucking cool. He rolls like a wheel and then completely changes methods of movement when picking up Brand
Yes. Someone who truly understands the subtle brilliance of Bill Irwin's acting. Every line, heck pretty much every word TARS (Bill Irwin) speaks is pure gold. Among the military jargon lines, I particularly like: "That's initiate." (when he reactivates CASE in Earth orbit) "Affirmative!" he says to Cooper inside the tesseract.
My favorite part is when he tells CASE he doesn't have a poker face and walks away... CASE turns around and looks at him as if a human would. Really showed how smart and aware the "robots" are without needing to use dialog. It's the part where TARS and CASE actually felt like they were almost human.
If you think about it, tars asks cooper how he got the coordinates for nasa on his map, in actual fact it was tars who give cooper the co ordinates in binary to give to cooper and murph on earth,. Crazy
Tars wasn't just a unique designs, it's a realistic design. This is something you'd see actual robotic engineers coming up with, overcoming the limitations of human bipedal motion while remaining simple and functional.
At the beginning of the movies, I thought CASE and TARS would revolt or turn against them. But they turned out to be great characters that are extremely vital to the mission
I love it when CASE goes off to rescue the woman astronaut on the water planet, and he goes into a rolling gait for speed. I like the robot movements and their running gait too. They put a lot of thought into this film.
There was another quote where Cooper says 'You don't talk much do you Case." And Case responds with "Tars talks plenty for both of us". 😆

you forgot when case says, "tars talks enough for the both of us"
what i like about films like this is that they show future technology that feels like it isnt shiny and new in that timeline but has been well worn and used which helps to make it feel real. TARS and CASE look old and rickety like they've been beaten up and clunky rather than sleek which helps to make them seem more real as a piece of technology that could exist rather than something completely fantastical
We all love TARS.
“But not a poker face”
“Nothing good”
Best lines of movie
The line.. "what your trust setting at?" "aparantly lower than yours!" is the best line
No docking scene? "Cooper.....we are...lined up"
Paddlez-is-king Coop, this is not the time for caution....
"What's your trust setting, TARS?"
"Lower than yours, apparently"
I really like that part as it shows how the robots are processing language purely as machines. Picking from pre-sampled phrases. And perhaps applying inflection on demand.
Cooper: "Ah. But not a poker face slick"
TARS: 😐
Northwestlove88 lol Tars was like tf
"CASE, you ready?""Affirmative, I have an efficient amount of human slaves to build my robot city.""CASE, what's your sense of humor set at?""78%""Let's notch it down to 65%" "Confirmed."
+Ben Geiger Correction, it was at 100%, he was told to turn it down to 75%.
+Irfan Khalis I think the maiden launch was directed by TARS, not CASE
+Ben Geiger how does anbody quote something so badly wtf
secondintelligentWorld LOL
Oh I love Tars et Case. (Funny how they make the word tesseract)
Actually all digital voices in Interstellars were all very comfortable and friendly.
When Dr. Mann tried to override the docking procedure, the computer says "unauthorised" in a very calm and friendly manner.
Yes! "Unauthoriiized ☺️". Mann (frustrated): "OverRIDE!" Endurance: "......Unauthoriiized. ☺️" The comic timing and calm intonation was brilliant.
TARS and CASE are hands down the best robots ever, seen in film
when i first saw this film on theaters, i thought TARS and CASE would do a HAL 9000 on Cooper
Skooma Much Same! Luckily this wasn't a Ridley Scott piece of shit hahaha

2001: ASO was directed by Stanley Kubrick
Me too. I was dreading that idea and hoped Nolan wouldn't include that plot. 2001 was enough for me.
I barely watch Sci-fi anymore coz i'm so sick of the anti-technology messages, and i eventually came to realise that film-makers are essentially just laymen on all topics except "how make films". I don't know why we think they deserve our attention, lets listen to experts in the respective fields instead.
I just watched this again last night after 10 years. TARS is so cool.
I love these robots so much
I just love, love, love these robots. The entire concept of them being rectangles that can change shape, hinge in different places and move in many different ways is just so imaginative. I wish that we had seen more of them in the film.
If I had a TARS follow me around in my life, that would be fucking cool.
wait 5 years :)
To be honest, I think they look silly at first, but with the progress of the film, they became much cooler.
they are actually very cleverly designed, and i wouldnt be suprised if this is the way robots are going
The methods of locomotion they designed for these things is so fucking cool. He rolls like a wheel and then completely changes methods of movement when picking up Brand
Roll. Slide...and "gallop" 😂
1:20 even though he doesn’t have a face, TARS’s expression speaks on so many levels
It just tickled me when TARS went “🤨”
humour 75% .. auto self destruct t-10,9.. lets make it 60%.. love that part :)
Knock Knock
+Mostank PL I really would have liked to hear a what kind of knock-knock joke a 60%-humour TARS would have made.
So wait for Interstaller II or DLC for first movie.

2:31 that detach! Was such an amazing addition wow!!!!!!!! So subtle but so amazing
Yes. Someone who truly understands the subtle brilliance of Bill Irwin's acting. Every line, heck pretty much every word TARS (Bill Irwin) speaks is pure gold. Among the military jargon lines, I particularly like:
"That's initiate." (when he reactivates CASE in Earth orbit)
"Affirmative!" he says to Cooper inside the tesseract.
My heart breaks a little bit when I hear Dr. Brant saying “Goodbye, TARS.” She is on the verge of tears, and rightfully so.
My favorite part is when he tells CASE he doesn't have a poker face and walks away... CASE turns around and looks at him as if a human would. Really showed how smart and aware the "robots" are without needing to use dialog. It's the part where TARS and CASE actually felt like they were almost human.
When CASE turned into an 8-bit Ferris wheel on Millers planet I fell in love with him
Are you a self-shipper?
Why is is so satisfying to just watch them run around
If you think about it, tars asks cooper how he got the coordinates for nasa on his map, in actual fact it was tars who give cooper the co ordinates in binary to give to cooper and murph on earth,. Crazy
The best one (that's missing in this video) is after they launch into space and TARS asks "Is everyone's good? Plenty of slaves for my robot colony."
I love the feeling that cooper and tars went out on adventures
I love these robots, they are great friends and supporters for the mission
I love hilarity in otherwise serious dramas. Nolan and Fincher have some real golden nuggets from time to time.
TARS is honestly my favorite character, I love him so much
TARS and CASE are incredibly underrated background characters.
TARS the biggest cinnamon roll, great companion to work and humor with
I'm gonna be that 96-year-old advocating for A.I.'s rights. I have such an affection for robots.
"Hello Case"
"Hello Tars"
- How heartwarming in my Opinion.
I cried that TARS survived in that black hole and finally reunited with Cooper
"Not a poker face, huh?"
Turns in disbelief
you missed the scene where TARS was shouting.. "STAND BACK PROFESSOR!, STAND BACK!" *romily dies*
Really great design on those robots. My favorite characters
WHY ARE YOU WHISPERING, THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU
I love it when CASE goes off to rescue the woman astronaut on the water planet, and he goes into a rolling gait for speed. I like the robot movements and their running gait too. They put a lot of thought into this film.
TARS the true MVP
