I had a German Shepherd mix (i.e. Cody) for 14 yrs (Dec. 1989-Feb. 2004), and I couldn't get another dog because the loss was painful. After 7 yrs., I decided to get another dog... a purebred German Shepherd (April 2011). I'm so glad I did. Cheyenne is eager to learn, smart, and loyal. Absolutely the best friend I ever had. If I didn't buy her, her life might have been much worse. She's 13 yrs old now, and still playing fetch, but a little slower now. I'm 67, and not sure if I have enough years remaining to buy another one when Cheyenne passes on. Meanwhile, I'm gonna try to help Cheyenne make it to 20+ yrs old, and then I'll be 74+. No dog should be treated like a piece of furniture. Every breed should be given attention at all times. Whoever says "no!" to that, shouldn't have a dog at all.
There are many variables to any breed's personality. You're repeating the textbook version of the working mal. It's also improbable that even from working lines all will have personalities indicative of a working line dog, an occasional dog will not be high drive, it's statistics. My uncle/grandparents had a black and silver German Shepherd. My grandparents had a business basically in their backyard. The dog was so mellow and friendly to everyone. When my sister was a baby, she was in some type of swing or bouncy thing, a nice customer started to walk towards my sister and even though was smiling and calm, Tara got between them and first I ever saw her bare her teeth at anyone. Never once was she taught to do that, she just knew. She was born around the time that I was, so I don't know for certain if she had any training. Was always close to her, went through a time of playing hide and seek. We would bring her inside and by the time she worked the door opened and opened the screen door, we could be hiding. Never took her long and there were some places where a person would never have thought to look or you could move from one spot to the next to evade a person, not her nose, eyes, and almost psychic ability. Have always wanted my own, but always ended up with one dog or another over the decades. Besides, by the time my childhood dog was dying, the Shepard had already been gone a few years and obviously way past having more pups even several years earlier. One of the best dogs I've ever known and I've known hundreds over the years, only had about 7 or 8 different types or mixes or total mutts. The mutts lived the longest always.

They are super smart dogs. They will follow you everywhere even in bathroom. If they didnt see you for 2 minutes its like you have been missing for years. Very important to train them young and they need open area to run around otherwise they will get sick. To them 72 degrees is hot. Make sure they have always watter to drink
it’s bullshit. Malinois are now mamed the most intelligent dogs on this planet. Just like the GSD if they are trained well they are amazing with kids. The longhair GSD needs to be compared to the Belgian Tervuren. These dogs are truly amazing and loving with children.
Wait until western unscrupulous breeders turn the Malinois into a loving family dog with health problems. That's how the GSD was screwed! Atleast the East Europeans conserved the original GSD
In austria the malinois is the most used dog in police and military. They are talented in every aspect. Not to heavy and crazy athletic. Once they lock om you there is no wall to high. Not even a tree saves you. Mine litarly climed a tree for jis frisvee 😂
So true, such a dog converted me because all I saw was glowing eyes and gleaming teeth at a friend's house and yelled "JESUS!!!" My friend said he's just a big old cuddlebug then proceeded to tell me how the dog handled intruders.😂
My older GSD would play ALL DAY if l left him outside ,my younger female (gsd) is a couch potato ,snores , and hogs the electric blanket during the colder months
Less than 1% of the people that see this short would be suitable owners for a malinois. Unless youre david goggins or have an extreme need for high level protection you probably dont need or want this dog.
@TMS-pj7fp me as well, atleast my male. We got a female Dutch that to me is a bit crazier. But both of them turn into complete nuts when you have them do actual work like protection/bite training.
@@randallhardin3318 that’s total bs man… this myth is reinforced cause meth-addicts and paratroopers love Mali’s, they overstimulate them and create psych dogs. When someone with decent knowledge on how to raise a stable dog owns a Mali they will be calm, grounded family dogs. Me and my wife take our two Mali’s to restaurants, hotels, kayak rides, family dinners, dog parks. They’re just dogs, get lost with your myths. You can drive a Ferrari to work just as well as you can have a relaxed Mali in your house
People always forget that breeds have worklines and showlines… breeders will not breed or sell working line dogs to a family with kids… I have two malinois, one bought as pup, never over stimulated her, never reinforced her work-drive, she’s a super laid back family dog, doesn’t even guard the house:) 2nd is a rescue and although he shows a history of defensive work he had adapted my dog’s attitude in and around the house, we have two couch potatoes that are happy with just cuddling and two or three walks a week…
i used to work as a decoy for working dogs inside buildings, we used to say " a german shepherd will watch the felon jump out the window while the malinois will jump after them"
Ich habe einen Mali zu Hause. Im Haus ist sie süß, verschmust und entspannt. Im Garten dreht sie blitzschnell auf Highspeed. Dabei macht sie Sprünge wie ein Reh.
Well, that was certainly a polite way of saying that malinois are less controllable and more likely to bite just anyone in the vicinity rather than the person they are ordered to attack.
I think these people who are saying, the Malinois is hire wired, need attention 24/7, and would jump through a 3 story window after a bad guy, just don't know how to train a dog.
@@KamikazeJustice Or. . .they are people who recognize that 100 year history of exemplary service from German Shepherds means more than trendy BS breeds.
King of Kings. My Mali is a pure beast when needed, and absolute sweetheart with the family and trusted ones. She has the recall like no other dog, the attention of no other dogs and the intelligence of a human
I love belgians I've had both breeds and prefer the working line German Shepherd next best thing is a working line German Shepherd Malinois cross. I will say that what you think is a purebred Mal while working in the special forces or police is not. 99% of them are X Malinois with Dutch and working German Shepherd in them lines to increase size and nerves
So, I like competent, protective, sweet, and harmless, loving/affectionate doggies, so I have a pug and a miniature daschund (mini-weenie) Oh yeah, and they're little comedians, too! 😂
I love Anatolian shepherds, kangal, alibai, and working line German Shepherds. I prefer Shepherds because they definitely want to please their owners and they are not nearly as independent as a kangal
My German shepherd was a mix of both. He was Playful, Relaxed, Obedient, Super Smart & Loved by anyone that's met him -- even people that fear/hate dogs ❤❤❤
Ive had both. Belgians cause far more stress. Glad I went with Golden retrievers. Easiest dog to have. Requires very little to no training. Easy to walk. Loves all people and other dogs. Makes no noise and doesn't tear up furniture. Yes they shed but so do Rot Weilers.
i picked up a beautiful 14 week old black female from Europe, she is super smart, poddy trained in a week. must run with her each night, always watching and wanting to hang out .she is a great fit .
Had GS most of my life. Loved each one of them. I have wonderful memories of them. We spend considerable amount of time training. Loyal, caring, intelligent, obedient, protective and incredible family members. Miss them all. 😢❤
I got my German Shepherd at age 6 mo. She was hyper and I was a bit worried I would not give her enough exercise being disabled and in more pain every day. That beautiful girl can run like the wind but watch the house from her recliner at the picture window. Her ferocious bark keeps everybody at a very safe distance for me to waddle to get my weapon. She is a terrific and chilled girl very large and scary as hell. Love it!
Im getting my Belgian Malinois for about 4 months, honestly cant wait to start high energetic trainings with him, that is one of the best dog breeds in the entire world, so smart, so powerful.
My girl is Malinoia X. Her coat and markings are GSD, but her head, muzzle, and drive are Malinois. In one week, she learned Danish, French, and German commands. She knows the name I'd every one of her toys. Her intelligence is off the chart.
X Malinois. Working line German Shepherd and Malinois Dutch crosses are actually what you predominantly see as a police or military dog and think is a malinois. They outcross with Dutch and working German Shepherd specifically the GSD to increase size and better nerves.
Both canines are wonderful, most handsome dogs, temperament, excellent & 100 % very protective & devoted to the owner& families. 👍🏼👍🏼 ( 2 thumbs up ) for this breed.
They both need lots of exercise. I’ve only had GSD but we had lots of property & they knew they’re job was mainly securing the border, house, & family. Our oldest GSD would try to get inside the window of any strangers car coming up our drive. No one could get out unless he allowed it, but then again he was also the pony for a 4 year old! He was huge!
I had a GSD / Malinois mix and miss him terribly. A super protective and aware gift with a great nose and energy reader. 1) on a quick night break in our front yard, and just 20 feet from our front door, Bear stopped, "herded" around me (6 ft leash always), and HE SAT ON MY FEET! THIS WITHIN 5 MINUTES of coming out the door. His ears pointed straight up, nose pointed down the sidewalk into the total darkness, mouth closed (they close mouth to stop panting so they can hear better)... My own radar fully engaged by this point. I had heard nothing. In seconds Bear's head showed me exactly where somewhere came walking noiselessly past us only about 10 feet from us.. only our front hedge between Bear and him...a tall almost invisible figure in black hoodie pulled down over his face, head down, hands in pockets. Locked me in my silence. Bear's nose stayed pointed directly at him as he passed and he didn't get off my feet until the guy had reached the second house down. Bear did not bark, keeping the advantage of silence and the dark, and his opening his mouth again signaled his job protecting me was done for the moment. The episode unforgettable, and proved how protective and aware he truly was. 2). More than just teeth and fur, Bear showed me another capability. For a few days Bear jammed his muzzle into the right side of my chest. Even though I told him that hurt and to stop it, he did it a few more days. Getting ready for bed, about a week after he started doing this, I noticed blood in the area he was focusing on. His nose helped me find a medical problem that needed surgery to correct. Another protection Bear gave me. Amazing dog. Since he passed, he checks on me on occasion... I hear him padding up to my bed at night making sure I'm all tucked in, then leaves and probably sits in the living room where he can see front door, slider to back, my bedroom door, and down the hall. Triangulation. So smart. Wonderful devotion. ❤ Thanks for reading. Do pay attention to your GSD's nose sensitivity even for your own health reasons. They really are furry Angels.
@@kims2r I think it takes the right dog from either breed to fit into certain situations. Mals are quicker and more intense but gsd’s are usually stronger and bite harder(well bred working line gsd’s) and they seem to have a stronger nerve as well. Like I said both are great and both are very versatile but both have different strengths.
I agree with the incompetent owners part. Ironically, I have a rescue dog who is actually a Dutch shepherd, which is 50%, Belgian Malinois as well as 50%. German Shepherd! she is so amazingly. Intelligent and high drive. Love this girl to pieces. ❤❤😊 Also I have knowledge and schutzhund training, And make sure she is always using her brain and active. My ex was law enforcement and had 2 previous shepherds. Who were incredible, wonderful animals? And she is the best addition to my family. I could have ever asked for
What's interesting is that the police actually specifically seek mixed Malinois that have German Shepherd and Dutch in them. What people think is a purebred Malinois police or military dog is not. They do use purebred working line German Shepherds and then they use predominantly working line German Shepherd Dutch Mal crosses
I train both breeds in personal protection, schutzhund, police work etc... GENERALLY the German shepherds are tougher, braver and have a higher fight drive... Mal's more energy, better athletes, but GENERALLY they lack the real fight drive of shepherds. For sports like schutzhund I give Mal's the edge... For real personal protection where the dog may have to actually engage and Stay in the fight I prefer the shepherds. Captain Max von stephanitz, the German military officer that created a he German shepherd was OBSESSED with creating the ultimate working dog... He would immediately kill any puppies he thought weren't a proper representation of the breed.
There’s a huge reason that militaries around the world use Malinois/Shepherd mixes because you get a highly athletic and driven dog when you cross these breeds which are extremely intelligent.
@@benpurcell4935 Independently and mixed you cannot go wrong with this breed in military or law enforcement. However, if you are looking for a pet, GSD are far superior to Malinois unless you are an experienced high energy individual. Even then I wouldn't own a Malinois.
My German Shepherd doesn’t have a calm demeanor at all! She is a very protective barking girl , emotional and needs lots of love , getting quite jealous of her brother, a yellow lab, gets petted and loved . Lucky I have two hands and can pet them at the same time! Lol 😂😂
I found my Sable GS on the streets last summer half alive she was chained up from what i saw on her neck and you could feel her spine all the way now shes fully recovered put on 20 + lbs and doesn't duck and waive her head all over when you pet her shes very loyal, loving and a protective pup, she took a while to get use to my female Korean Jindo they're best of friends now! Both were rescues i love them so much❤
My 9 mo GSD mix puppy is such a lovebug, sooo smart and adores people. I swear he understands almost everything I say on a regular basis to him. Makes it very easy to train him, although he still needs training while dealing with distractions. He is mixed with chow-chow mostly, with a slight bit of hound, white Swiss shepherd, and aussie shepherd in his DNA. He is getting huge and still has a way to go!!
What a Treasure! You are very smart to continue to train him every day for the rest of his life. His great brain should never be idle🎉 And so his live will always be engaged❤
I love German shepherds and Dobermans as well. I’m a woman. I had both braids for a very long time and I can tell you is there a wonderful and you learn a lot especially the German Shepherd became my favorite. People tend to adopt small puppies and that is fine small dogs are great but their toys The beautiful toys with the big dogs you have more responsibility they give you back more. They like kind of people read it for real… They tolerant their patient they play with you. They’re happy when you take them to the field where they love to get the frisbee it’s just it’s an array of events and emotions with them their fantastic. I love love love big breeds, especially German Shepherd
The sad is the more popular these breeds becomes, the more incompetent owners show up.
So true. Many will end up in a pound because they can’t handle these kinds of dogs
and breed them without regard to DNA etc....backyard breeders ruin many breeds, Golden Retrievers, Shepards, American Pit Bull, Rotweillers, etc...just ruin them for generations...

What crap I’m not in security or combat situations and I have a Mali who gets the most from an active life
I would add they benefit from regular brushing so they don't develop mats.
it’s bullshit. Malinois are now mamed the most intelligent dogs on this planet. Just like the GSD if they are trained well they are amazing with kids. The longhair GSD needs to be compared to the Belgian Tervuren. These dogs are truly amazing and loving with children.
Saying "they look the same" yet you can physically see the difference in the faces
Those Malinois eyes!!!
Better language might be " some people confuse the breeds at a superficial glance. However, a closer look reveals..."
Gsd is a wolf, it's perfect, bm is weird looking
German Shepherd looks more like a wolf and Malinois looks more like a coyote
German Shepard: Cop dog ❤
Malinois: Special Forces dog ❤
Dutch number 1 dog police
Belgians are used by the police as well.

Nothing scarier than a black shepherd you didn’t notice was in the room long after you entered.
I have one, bicolor working line
Truth‼️ All you see is eyes 👀 n teeth‼️😱😨🥺😆🤣😂
@@SouthernCharmaine😂😂😂😂
So true, such a dog converted me because all I saw was glowing eyes and gleaming teeth at a friend's house and yelled "JESUS!!!"
My friend said he's just a big old cuddlebug then proceeded to tell me how the dog handled intruders.😂
Agree
My older GSD would play ALL DAY if l left him outside ,my younger female (gsd) is a couch potato ,snores , and hogs the electric blanket during the colder months
Less than 1% of the people that see this short would be suitable owners for a malinois. Unless youre david goggins or have an extreme need for high level protection you probably dont need or want this dog.
German Shepherd has a high drive too when its a workingline dog. The Mallinoi is also more sensitiv then the German Shepherd.
@@kristijantadic8476 just be happy your dog isn’t cracked out 24/7
🫡
I have a malinois who is easily hyped up but not like she's on Crack 24/7 so I'm lucky lol
@TMS-pj7fp me as well, atleast my male. We got a female Dutch that to me is a bit crazier. But both of them turn into complete nuts when you have them do actual work like protection/bite training.
Like they say about those malinois,, they do not have a off switch,, they are ready to go 24/7 and that's a fact
My Boston Terrier are keeping my GS busy all dayi fenced 5 acres....and I never lock my home or cars
Yikes! 😮
Mine absolutely has an off switch. You have to teach them to find it the day you get them home.
You must not know how to train them then.
Our Getman Shepherd Loves his Family.
Both beautiful breeds of dogs 🐕.
Both totally Awesome!
WORD
It breaks my heart both of these Brave breeds give their lives because of evil.
Both beautiful.
My ideal security system would be five of either breed.
Same here with the same security ideas!!!!!0
A puppy with lineage of these two dogs is preferred if you’re going to do this.
2 of each, and 2 rhodesian ridgebacks, 2 rottweilers and 2 presa canario
@@unsullied1818 Right on, that is an awesome security system
People always forget that breeds have worklines and showlines… breeders will not breed or sell working line dogs to a family with kids… I have two malinois, one bought as pup, never over stimulated her, never reinforced her work-drive, she’s a super laid back family dog, doesn’t even guard the house:) 2nd is a rescue and although he shows a history of defensive work he had adapted my dog’s attitude in and around the house, we have two couch potatoes that are happy with just cuddling and two or three walks a week…
i used to work as a decoy for working dogs inside buildings, we used to say " a german shepherd will watch the felon jump out the window while the malinois will jump after them"
Because GSD are smarter.
Truth
@@Brownsocksflirt I don't think so.
@@Valdaboisactually yes the German Shepherd has more self-preservation than the Malinois
@@primalcritters I was replying to Brownsocksflirt because he said that GSDs are smarter and I disagree.
Both ❤ but my most favourite GSD ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. All in one quality’s breed .
Love our German shepherd puppy. Our lab liked her the most out of the litter. She gets so excited when I come home, absolutely adorable.
Belgian mallinois is not a dog its a highly driven soldier that can work out any problem they are NOT for the faint hearted !
Ich habe einen Mali zu Hause. Im Haus ist sie süß, verschmust und entspannt. Im Garten dreht sie blitzschnell auf Highspeed.
Dabei macht sie Sprünge wie ein Reh.
I have a German shepherd and wow by far the best breed as far as a great companion and protector.
ive had 3 german shepherds, and they are the absolute best. their temperment is amazing, and so is their loyalty
The second dog is actually one of the most popular and smartest dog breeds in the world
The second dog lol if you actually knew that then why wouldn't you just say the breed?
Well, that was certainly a polite way of saying that malinois are less controllable and more likely to bite just anyone in the vicinity rather than the person they are ordered to attack.
I think these people who are saying, the Malinois is hire wired, need attention 24/7, and would jump through a 3 story window after a bad guy, just don't know how to train a dog.

Both are awesome and amazingly intelligent
Love my GSD
This is a good way to explain the difference
What a good description of these dogs
Malinois have no off switch!
German sheppards seem to be making a comeback. The pitt craze might be cooling off?
You did not talk about the small fox..why?.😂😂😂
I was wondering that too.
Me 2
The fox was so cute. Bouncing around like a little kid.
2 of the best breeds on the planet. Love'em both.
Malinois and German Shepherd, it's like the old saying ," Marines come in two sizes - skinny and mean and big and mean"
The German Shepherd females aren't usually that big. And they can be very agile and quick.
Love them both, had GS and they are super dogs
So, I like competent, protective, sweet, and harmless, loving/affectionate doggies, so I have a pug and a miniature daschund (mini-weenie)
Oh yeah, and they're little comedians, too! 😂
I love both breeds but know i could never have one
Awesome dogs but after getting a Turkish kangal, there will never be another breed of dog in my home.
الكنجال التركي غبي كالاتراك
I love Anatolian shepherds, kangal, alibai, and working line German Shepherds. I prefer Shepherds because they definitely want to please their owners and they are not nearly as independent as a kangal
My German shepherd was a mix of both.
He was Playful, Relaxed, Obedient, Super Smart & Loved by anyone that's met him -- even people that fear/hate dogs
❤❤❤
Very impressive. Both of them.
Rotties are wonderful too.
Why did your Malinois cause you stress?
Gave goosebumps 😮❤❤❤❤I'm sold for both at this point.
They are really beautiful.
i picked up a beautiful 14 week old black female from Europe, she is super smart, poddy trained in a week. must run with her each night, always watching and wanting to hang out .she is a great fit .
These dogs practically house train themselves
The fox is cute jumping on the GS.
Had GS most of my life. Loved each one of them. I have wonderful memories of them. We spend considerable amount of time training. Loyal, caring, intelligent, obedient, protective and incredible family members. Miss them all. 😢❤
Both great dogs
I got my German Shepherd at age 6 mo. She was hyper and I was a bit worried I would not give her enough exercise being disabled and in more pain every day. That beautiful girl can run like the wind but watch the house from her recliner at the picture window. Her ferocious bark keeps everybody at a very safe distance for me to waddle to get my weapon. She is a terrific and chilled girl very large and scary as hell. Love it!
Magnificent and beautiful beyond anything❤
I grew up with German Shepherds. My dad trained them and I can tell you for a fact that they are EXTREMELY loyal
Absolutely stunning dogs. B. M are fierce worriors, designed to work, and protect their humans. Gorgeous breeds
Both are awesome ❤
My German shepherds was awesome.l loved them very much!! The only dogs I will ever own
I love them both
They are both amazing breeds!! ❤❤
Love the Sheppard
We had one when I was a kid . Prince was his name . Very protective... miss him alot .
Both canines are wonderful, most handsome dogs, temperament, excellent & 100 % very protective & devoted to the owner& families. 👍🏼👍🏼 ( 2 thumbs up ) for this breed.
They both are Beautiful Guard Dogs
They both need lots of exercise. I’ve only had GSD but we had lots of property & they knew they’re job was mainly securing the border, house, & family. Our oldest GSD would try to get inside the window of any strangers car coming up our drive. No one could get out unless he allowed it, but then again he was also the pony for a 4 year old! He was huge!
My malinois is a LOYAL dog more towards possessive and a HUGE live bug but needs mental stimulation
They're both incredible animals
The little girl just walks on cause she knows that she's in good hands, and is protected.
I rather have the German Shepherd.
I have a BM/GSD mix. Smartest dog I've ever seen in my life. 30 years of rescue work.
They are also capable of solving problems on their own, not just waiting for instructions.
@@serahloeffelroberts9901 trust me, I know. She's getting her own ice and snacks from the fridge.
Bear's nose
stayed pointed directly at him as he passed and he didn't get off my feet until the guy had reached the second house down.
@mlsg8 thank you for sharing. I really dread the day I lose Rebel. She is my heart.
Amazing. Both are incredibly smart. I own a shepherd who learned to open doors on his own. He'll just barge in on you 😂
Both fabulous dogs.
That little red fox jumping about 😂
The Belgian Malinois is in a league of its own.
Ehh
They both are. The game is different and they are both perfect for their specific uses.
@@marka1712I think the Mali can do everything the German Shepherd can but not the other way around☺️
@@kims2rI agree & I've had both breeds
Yea some dogs rocks more than others❤❤❤.
I agree with the incompetent owners part. Ironically, I have a rescue dog who is actually a Dutch shepherd, which is 50%, Belgian Malinois as well as 50%. German Shepherd! she is so amazingly. Intelligent and high drive. Love this girl to pieces. ❤❤😊
Also I have knowledge and schutzhund training, And make sure she is always using her brain and active. My ex was law enforcement and had 2 previous shepherds. Who were incredible, wonderful animals? And she is the best addition to my family. I could have ever asked for
They know when you are ill and injured and become especially gentle with you.
What's interesting is that the police actually specifically seek mixed Malinois that have German Shepherd and Dutch in them. What people think is a purebred Malinois police or military dog is not. They do use purebred working line German Shepherds and then they use predominantly working line German Shepherd Dutch Mal crosses
Perfect Team Spirits respect each other personalities awesome ❤❤❤
Thank you for this informative clip ... ❤❤❤❤
I love both🎉
My Nan & Papete had a GS when I was a kid. He saved my sisters and my life twice. Once from a Doberman, and once from a stranger in a van.
I have 7 BM they are awesome dogs... I love them...
I just take the Fox 🦊 lol
Me too
Great breeds
Amazing!❤❤❤
So the Belgian is actually a Mexican construction worker
😂😂
I'd say the Mal is a Shepard that can do parkour
I’ve had both, and they’re the dumbest yet most intelligent dogs I have ever met 😂
Beautiful dogs
A dog, this eager to please and this talented, could be the best, or the worst, depending on the owner.
I totally agree with your comment.
There’s a huge reason that militaries around the world use Malinois/Shepherd mixes because you get a highly athletic and driven dog when you cross these breeds which are extremely intelligent.
Interesting assessment.
@@benpurcell4935 Independently and mixed you cannot go wrong with this breed in military or law enforcement. However, if you are looking for a pet, GSD are far superior to Malinois unless you are an experienced high energy individual. Even then I wouldn't own a Malinois.
@@c.san.8751 I agree with you.
I have a 4 year old Belgian and 2 more puppies arriving any day. You better be ready for them. :)
