Using the app on your phone is an entirely different issue. In that scenario, you are attaching a computer (the DJI controller) directly to your phone via cable AND you give the DJI controller computer broad permissions to access your phone.

The map of restricted geo zones is in the drone's memory. It doesn't need a real-time data link. Even if you don't own a drone yet you can get the DJI Fly app and check out the map showing the red, restricted zones (prisons, airports etc.), the blue 'authorization' zones (permission needed - okay, yes, an internet connection IS needed to get a three day 'license' to unlock these areas.) It is ironic how the same ban that is being applied to Chinese EV’s is being proposed for Chinese drones. In both cases, the motivation seems to be, the inability of American companies to compete. I don’t support the DJI drone Ban. And I guess, 0:10 extension, I don’t support a Ban on Chinese EV’s. Let the companies with the best technology win!

@billykyle The bad thing is like you said, the American built drones are STRICTLY for recreational use, they are indeed too toylike. I bought one at Toys R Us (back when it was open) when I wanted to learn and teach myself how to fly a drone. As I got more serious about drones, I bought a Yuneec Q500 4K (another company based in China). And as I got more into drones, the name DJI kept popping up. After research and seeing the camera quality, I decided to get one from DJI. And it's awesome!! It's a shame that these claims are most likely from an agenda to lodge the company from dominance in the market. But I thought this is America, where free market is king. American companies need to up their game, to create bigger and better drones for professionals, prosumers and recreational users. It will be interesting to see what happens today. Thanks Billy for a great video regarding the matter, from the DJI usage perspective
CORRECTION: we do need to connect our DJI controller to the internet in order to ‘unlock’ the drone due to DJI’s geofencing program. If they eliminate that then we would only have to connect to the internet when we first activate the drone.
Having to activate it or create an account to use it is absurd. There's no real reason for that. I see it's the same on their Action cameras. I hope this trend won't continue. I've never heard of a valid reason to do it.
It's just hilarious that USA of all places are complaining about "personal information" required for the DJI drones. When its all just an email adress, which could be a throwaway email.... Meanwhile USA mandates remote-ID (which dji themselves tried to OPPOSE), which transmits your full information, real name, home adress, phone number, gps coordinates of your controller (you) location in realtime everytime you fly anywhere.. It's just beyond comical the insanity at display.
@baleur - that is not correct. RID does not broadcast personal identification, only information about the drone and the location of the controller. From the FAA documentation: From takeoff to shutdown, the drone broadcasts: n Drone ID (serial number) n Drone location and altitude n Drone velocity n Control station location and elevation n Time mark n Emergency status
I don’t really have a dog in the fight, but this crowd might want to consider the big picture. There are two ways the Chinese state can collect data. The first, and the most sinister, would be a Trojan horse. HUAWEI got away with this for years before anyone figured out they had embedded a seemingly benign chip to surveil on router infrastructure. Also, If they only embedded 5% of the DJI drones, it would be hard to detect from hardware sampling, but the data mining would be very high. The other method is passive surveillance from those who upload. We call this the convenient idiot method. These cameras have very wide fields of view that can be data mined with AI to build a complete intelligence picture from seemingly benign footage across multiple uploads. And just because the servers are in the US does not mean the C-state does not have access. A recent example of this was the port crane cameras (China has the port crane market cornered) that had a line of sight to US naval and merchant shipping movements. All that data was being mined off supposed US servers and sent to the C-state. Lastly, DJI cornered the US market because the C-state helped them dump on our market. Low-cost drone infrastructure is now a matter of national security, given the revelations coming out of Ukraine. Without a volume market, the US will never catch up. Lastly, we have not been given everything the US government is worried about. This is standard practice for counter inelegance. So, before you call your favorite senator, you might want to consider the benefits of some short-term pain vs. long-term gain. China is not our friend, and I am sure none of you want to be the convenient idiot.
Exactly. This is what I'm afraid of with any device. drone or not. So that's why I'm concerned. But performance wise I'm sold n DJI action 5 Pro. But security wise I'm not.
There's no reason one should have to log in, or create an account or connect it to wifi to use an electronic device of any kind. It's simply stupid. It would be nice if one could just take it out of the box and see if it works, and then do what ever one wants. Account or no account. I'm still concerned. Even for an action camera. I'm still concerned about firmware updates. connecting their devices to my devices. I don't have hate towards the people working there. but for me it's simply a security concern. I'm not in USA, nor affiliated with any company or government. So far no ban on DJI in Norway, not heard anything about this. I will remain skeptic, Until I know the device and it's software is safe.
Hey Billy is any way we can help from our side kindly lets us know as we all araound the world dont want this to escalate , we all love and share a great expirience with DJI and we want to stay doing it, we hope for the best ... greetings
Great walk through of how set up a new DJI drone without sharing all your data to a server somewhere in the world., if choose not to not to share. I hope are lawmakers are up to speed on all the facts of how this DJI ban will affect millions of users, before they vote, Thanks for sharing, Billy.
What are the claims though? That DJI shares your email adress or your flight logs? That really wouldnt be very useful, apart from showing squiggly lines concentrated over tourist areas on the map. The real thing that is being insinuated to scare people, is the fantasy of "omg DJI tracks everything the camera records and sends back to CCCP in realtime". Because that's the one thing that would ACTUALLY matter, right? That is, physically impossible, by the laws of electromagnetism... Are these people actually thinking that the drone or controller radio transmitter is powerful enough to connect to a satellite in orbit for a 1080p realtime video feed? Or are they actually living in the fantasy of thinking every consumer DJI drone has a secret quantum-tunneling device installed that relays back video footage directly to China via quantum entanglement? I mean can we just openly talk about this? Because if we openly talk about this, you realize how batshit insane the claims are. Thats why the push on this has been so vague to just say "data security concerns". "The Chynese are SPYIN on us". Okay, how exactly? Tell me how it specifically would work. If you actaully ask how it would physically happen, the whole fantasy falls apart.
This Bill is absolutely nonsense. How can a bill be passed with out any evidence of wrong doing?? This is bullying, senators should be ashamed to back legislation that is being used for all the wrong purposes.
I'm still waiting for proof of the claims being made against DJI. These other companies that can't compete with DJI need to step up their game if they want to be the top dog of the drone industry. My money will always be with DJI.
I agree with the video. I think all the users of DJI should be aware of the security that is provided by DJI is safe for them and be aware of the politics that is going on which has really no transparency showing that they have found some insufficient security in DJI. It is all politics for promoting the comprehensive have no technological excellence and can't find away to win the market. I wouldn't trustSkydio. I called them a year ago to find d their pricing plan and it took such a long time to get the details. And in few month they dropped their consumer drone line. How can we trust Skydio on the long-time support. On the other hand DJI is coming out with the newer software and hardware every year. I think there should a legal way to challenge this bill. The public representative should be more transparent to the people who they represent and not to the comprehensive funded their elections. It is just disgusting and disappointing on the pub!if representative who are sitting in for us. I am with DJI and I hope everything goes right way at the end. The truth should win and not the politics.
Thank you for your service sir, I appreciate the vid and the interview. I feel like a lot of this China stuff is a front, it must tie into the FAA just not wanting people to fly drones in general except for the big companies that they except from all the rules. You might ask how the two is related and the answer is the classic USA answer: lobbying lol
Billy nice having someone on from dji. This, I believe, is just political nonsense. I am in the uk, but I'm watching to see what develops as it will impact more than just America
All the drone "influencers" need to step up and make it clear the political source of these bills. I know it doesn't lend itself to popular appeal, but this is mostly coming from one party.
USA companies...... "if you can't compete, ask your government to defeat" has been done with other companies, AND ideas, throughout the years. Instead of bettering ourselves, we cry and throw tantrums until our "daddy" fixes it for us. That's why we are falling behind in tech, education, manufacturing, and a lot of other areas. In order to be better, DO better.
I have watched, or tried to, a couple of your drone videos. I think some of them are interesting with the info you offer. Unfortunately you just talk way too fast which makes it a little hard to understand everything you are saying and then after awhile it becomes annoying so I just leave that video. I’m not trying to be mean, just offering information to you. If you didn’t talk so fast I would probably watch your videos. I know we are all different and that’s probably just how you talk. So again not trying to be mean just letting you know. Have a good day.
I was engaged in a previous effort to address federal regulations on drones. From first-hand experience, I can tell you there is nothing you can do. DJI is almost certainly cooked, and it will be a welcome and necessary change to return the innovation we sold to China. I am underinformed on the details, yet I could run circles around that guest with facts and DJI history. I am proud to be the dissenting voice, standing up for freedom and privacy and not giving it all to a PRC-controlled company that has chronically lied to users and government officials.
I'm listening. Our echo chamber needs outside voices like yours. Got my first drone a year ago and thought, to quote David Letterman: "This is more fun than humans should be allowed to have."

@@tomn8trI heard the same thing was hoping it was wrong and maybe Billy knew. This whole thing is unbelievably ridiculous can't believe it got this far. Thank you for an answer.
oh, FCC (Federal Communications Commission) the radio frequency spectrum regulators. At first glance I confused it as FAA.
Wow, everybodys getting in on this fight.
Does it work the same way with the air 2s? With our phones.
How long is customs allowed to hold my property without an actual reason?
It is ironic how the same ban that is being applied to Chinese EV’s is being proposed for Chinese drones. In both cases, the motivation seems to be, the inability of American companies to compete. I don’t support the DJI drone Ban. And I guess, 0:10 extension, I don’t support a Ban on Chinese EV’s. Let the companies with the best technology win!
how come the timezone EST aint available to select from in the menu? Check that again. Thats odd.
It shows up as "eastern time" at exactly 7:00 into the video. He missed it.
I've written 3 times to that drone advocacy alliance. I don't know if it's going to make any difference, but yeah.
Thanks for sharing Billy. Great way to show the people that are saying we share data that goes to China. I just really hope that we can make a difference.
Thanks again 👍 👍 👍
Does anyone know if the DJI ban went through?
Thanks ❤
I just purchased the osmo pocket 3. Will this affect me as well from being able to use it? Anyone??
We don't know for sure but there is talk that it may make it's way to all DJI products (drone or not)
Chinese are listening in on you😮😂
CORRECTION: we do need to connect our DJI controller to the internet in order to ‘unlock’ the drone due to DJI’s geofencing program. If they eliminate that then we would only have to connect to the internet when we first activate the drone.
Exactly what I said
well you can buy use mod that allows you to fly in no fly zones and so on
Having to activate it or create an account to use it is absurd. There's no real reason for that. I see it's the same on their Action cameras. I hope this trend won't continue. I've never heard of a valid reason to do it.
All that info is already in your account... wtf total scam.
You’re the best. Thank you for all you do.
Best Buy no longer keeps drones in store so you're going to have to order it anyway
There are 7 Best Buy’s within 16 miles of me and everyone of them h=display and have dji drones in stock.
@@txarchdroneguy4731
You are lucky then.
Most of them in Michigan can't keep them in stock because they keep getting stolen.
Very True, when it comes to innovation of privacy, the US is as bad as China.
@baleur - that is not correct. RID does not broadcast personal identification, only information about the drone and the location of the controller. From the FAA documentation:
From takeoff to shutdown, the drone broadcasts:
n Drone ID (serial number)
n Drone location and altitude
n Drone velocity
n Control station location and elevation
n Time mark
n Emergency status
"as of recent" when he meant to say "as of late."
What charger is that?
don't believe any of this nonsense. cannot update the firmware on action4 without the dji mimo app... which is banned.
Thank you for putting this video together! I have shared on social and sent the email. I will also call.
Would you review the DJI h30 cameras
lmao, they will ban their cameras too, now what?
@@XdekHckr sucks indeed
Great information as usual, thanks
Great video BK!!
"false claims"? Where is your evidence to say they are false claims?
I have a horrible feeling that possibly “Kim Joung Un” is responsible for all of this drone drama. God bless DJI❤.
Since when have legislators given a flying flip about what the citizens think? Face it, no matter what we say, the bill will pass.
The passwd on your DJI account isn't working for me. Can you help? please... :)
Too bad botgrinder won't send out another viral video to stand up and voice your opinion. But bot is laughing at DJI right now.🎉
What are the claims though?
Can someone or some of these people be sued for false accusations, forcing them to try and come up with some form of evidence if any?
This Bill is absolutely nonsense. How can a bill be passed with out any evidence of wrong doing?? This is bullying, senators should be ashamed to back legislation that is being used for all the wrong purposes.
It's such bullshit. The fear monger about DJI Drones is ridiculous. Politics is disgusting 🤦🏾♂️
I guess you've never heard of the CCP. Enjoy tiktok
Thanks for your message DJI, your feedback is really important, and i'll make sure to pass your message to the correct political department.
BK dropping knowledge while Supercharging.
Love the hoodie
I reached out to my senator Joni Ernst. She replied, twice, with "We don't use drones for military action against civilians." What a joke.
That's brilliant!
Same, called all my reps and senators.
Thanks you Billy for making this video. I’ve reached out to my “representatives”. Even the democrats are in favor of it.
I think they want to ban DJI because no other US drone company can compete with DJI.
This is pretty much assumed at this point, especially given the ties between the congresswoman and Skydio.
It’s about money and bribery, not data. Buy your DJI hardware online from abroad.
US has issue with dji since its doing better they wish it was them
Boycott Skydio!!
what can DJI data provide that satellites cannot??? Seems like CCP probably already has the land data they need, no?
Thanks god am not in the US 😅
All the drone "influencers" need to step up and make it clear the political source of these bills. I know it doesn't lend itself to popular appeal, but this is mostly coming from one party.
DJI isn't spying on us because i say so and so does this guy who works for DJI.
Oh, ok then. Why didn't you just say so?
Just sent out my emails!
Ban all chynese electronics ❤
I have watched, or tried to, a couple of your drone videos. I think some of them are interesting with the info you offer. Unfortunately you just talk way too fast which makes it a little hard to understand everything you are saying and then after awhile it becomes annoying so I just leave that video. I’m not trying to be mean, just offering information to you. If you didn’t talk so fast I would probably watch your videos. I know we are all different and that’s probably just how you talk. So again not trying to be mean just letting you know. Have a good day.

@@olabergvall3154 hey,mi didn’t know that. It works pretty good. Thank you
I was engaged in a previous effort to address federal regulations on drones.
