  • I'd walked by this coffee shop a number of times as I explored this part of Medan. And it always struck me as an interesting place to check out. In particular, I was attracted to the tables that I could see in the balcony windows on the second and third floors.
I was a bit tired and hot and sweaty on this afternoon, but I thought this might be my last chance to check the Coffee Box out, and I went inside for a cold drink.

Cc. I noticed my local coffee shop offered matcha latte so I ordered one a few weeks ago. First time I ever had one. I feel behind the times. Anyhow, it was good.

CC I like matcha / green tea. I often buy Yeo's Jasmine green tea.

To be honest, I didn't know much about matcha and matcha tea for most of my life. I think it was in Mae Sot that I ordered it for the first time. Now I have a taste for it.

I love matcha latte. Nothing beats a good cup of hot coffee with milk though. Hot caffe latte > iced matcha latte > ice cold cola > everything else for me.

Hi doug I hope you can help me with my main question which is do you think sumatra is worth cycle touring or not I am thinking about the central/northern east side in around 10 days time? How's the weather then? You seem to have spent quite a while there now so would be able to give good advice? Most things I've seen or read haven't been positive so was wondering what your take is? Many thanks

That is an excellent question, since I originally did do a bit of cycling there. And, to be honest, I concluded that it wasn't worth it. I rode from Dumai to the mountain town of Bukittinggi recently, and the roads were very uncomfortable. The roads were dominated by what felt like billions of large trucks, and they roared past me in a never ending parade with just inches to spare. It felt very dangerous to me and quite stressful.
And around Bukittinggi, traffic was just as crazy, and the roads to the various attractions were so steep as to make cycling nearly impossible. Yes, you could make it up and down those roads on a bicycle, but you really had to wonder if there was any point to it. You expect to put in a bit of physical effort on a bicycle, but there can be a point when it just feels ridiculous. That's when I decided to rent a scooter instead, and my life got so much better.
A few years ago, I rode my bike in a clockwise circle from Lake Toba along the coast to Banda Aceh (west coast) and then back to Medan along the east coast.
The west coast in the north was fine. I really enjoyed that. Beautiful coastal scenery. The traffic was tolerable. And there were steep hills and lots of climbing, but it was fine. It felt like normal bike touring. And there were lots of rough but beautiful beaches to check out with fishing villages and places like that.
I can't say the same for the east coast route from Banda Aceh to Medan. On that section, I was often back in almost unbearable truck traffic.
I guess it depends on what you mean by central/northern east side. If I have my geography straight, that is the area north of Medan on the east coast? I don't have fond memories of cycling that myself. Very congested and busy roads with that endless truck traffic. But perhaps you have a more specific region in mind.
I suppose it could be true that I'm just not as tough as I once was, and I was probably never tough, but by the time the dust settled on my Sumatran experiences, I concluded that bike touring there doesn't make a lot of sense. It can be done, of course. Bike touring is always interesting, and it is a great way to meet people and explore off-the-beaten-path regions and have lots of unusual experiences. But I don't think I would do it again. I would bow to the inevitable and rent a scooter. That could lead to a much more enjoyable experience. I guess it depends on how committed you are to the bike touring experience overall. 😎
I'm no weather expert. Rain seems to follow me everywhere I go. But my sense is that the weather in February/March/April would be suitable for bike touring. I wouldn't be discouraged by any website that says it might rain a lot. They tend to be very pessimistic. I think the weather at that time would be good.

@@PlanetDoug wow thanks doug for the very informative reply yes I think you have confirmed my suspicions that the negatives would outway any positives I love cycling but not if it's dangerous and uncomfortable it's a shame there isn't more shoulder on the roads there as sumatra looks interesting oh well for another time when I'm without my bicycle, many thanks again Bridget.

CC: never tried Matcha in any way :)

Matcha is kind of a new thing for me, too. I think I had it for the first time in Mae Sot in Thailand when I was doing a lot of cafe-hopping for TH-cam. And I never really loved it, but it was a nice change from the usual drinks I might order. Oddly enough, it always made me think of life in Canada, because it tasted exactly like mown grass. It brings back memories of cutting the lawn in Canada and smelling the freshly mown grass.
