    Dear Pak Doug, I'm 51 and Medan is my hometown. You may want to visit for breakfast this 2 places: Bihun Bebek Asie (Kumango street) , Soto Sinar Pagi (Sei Deli street)
    And for dinner: Kwetiau Ateng (S. Parman street)

      Thanks for the tips. I notice that I actually have the Soto Sinar Pagi place bookmarked as a place of interest. Maybe the Lost Boys went there for a meal. It appears to be well-known.

    CC There is a reason why your food was served to you with separated broth! The version you had was a Dry Noodle version where the taste is usually more slightly intense due to more soy or salt pepper Not diluted. You can sip your broth as you swallow or down your dry noodles during the meal. This broth will assist you to swallow your dry noodles during the in Take.If you wish to have wet noodles, you should order the Noodles with Broth or Mie sup...

      Yup. Doug might not be aware that most Chinese noodles has 2options, that is the dry and soup version.

      Yeah, I had no idea there was any kind of a dry/wet version of these dishes. As often happens, I just pointed at a picture on the menu and hoped for the best. 😀 The funny thing is that I spent quite a long time going over the menu and examining the photos, and I translated all the descriptions using Google Translate. I wanted to get some sense of what the differences were between the options. But in the end, I still didn't really figure anything out, and I just picked the first item on the menu. I think the photo even showed the "bakmi" (dumplings) in the bowl with the noodles. So I was surprised when they came in a separate bowl with broth. I figured I was supposed to dump it all together. Meals are always a mystery on Planet Doug. 😁

    Hello doug .. in your previous video you did walk past this joint and i could not help loving the big bottle of bintang beer outside the shop 😋😋😋 the food looks really outstanding and i hope they didnt add msg in it . Take care keep smiling ..

      Thank you!
      I remember walking by it as well, and I took note of the big plastic beer bottle sign. It's interesting that the Google Maps Street view image doesn't show that beer bottle sign. So I guess it was put up after the Google car drove by. I wonder when that was.
      I don't know about MSG. I know a lot of people talk about it and have a physical reaction to it. But I don't think it has ever bothered me one way or the other. I I wouldn't be able to tell if it was in a dish or not. 😀

    Cc I was wondering how you panned the food as well as you did. Makes sense it was your phone. I love the old style steak houses where they bring out free stuff ahead of the meal. Relish trays, bread or crackers...or all 3.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I've started doing that with my phone lately. And it makes sense. Assuming you want to take the time and use up the energy, it's nice to have some B-roll of a meal you ate and put that into the video while you talk about it. I guess that's more interesting than just having video from the mounted GoPro for the entire meal.
      I tried to take video like this with my Olympus camera. But it felt like too much work to lug around and then set up such a big camera. And the results weren't worth the effort. The next best thing for me is the smartphone.
      Ideally, it would be nice to have a smaller main camera, like one of the premium compact 1-inch-sensor cameras. But I've never gotten around to picking one of those up. Still waiting for them to work out the kinks....

    Very interesting, Doug. Happy Chinese New Year. You must be satisfied with that hotel as you have stayed there for quite a while . I was fascinated to see that you just hand that green card over to the reception staff, let them know how many more nights you are staying and Bob's your uncle . Do they use a 'topping up ' system ? I take that is not a credit card ..... is it ? Well done .

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, that card is just the room key. I'd already extended my stay at the hotel for another two nights online. But the key card is connected to my previous reservation, so when I rebook the room, I have to give it to them and they reset it so that it can still open my door. Otherwise it just stops working. 😀
      I didn't really have to tell him, '"Two nights". He can probably see that on his computer. But I just wanted to make sure that he knew I had booked two more nights and not just one.

    My wife let out a shriek as she sees you pouring the broth into your noodles.😱😂😂

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's funny. My apologies to your wife. Of course, I had no idea what was the proper way to eat these noodles. However, even if I knew I was supposed to eat them dry, even if I knew that was the right way to eat them, I'd still pour the broth into the noodles. They're better that way I think. 😀
      To be honest, I'm still confused about this dish. I ordered only the noodles by pointing at that item on the menu. I ordered only that one thing. So I don't know why I got a bowl of noodles and a bowl of broth with the dumplings. And since I ordered only one dish but it came in two bowls, I assumed I was meant to combine them. I figured the broth was kept separate so that the noodles didn't get soggy. And then you are supposed to add the broth yourself when you were ready to eat. That made logical sense to me.

      Hahaha. As long as you enjoyed it. That's all that matters. But don't do that to your Hainan Chicken Rice. It comes with rice, chicken and a bowl of broth. 😊

    Sir kapan nginap di wisma sederhana lagi😊

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the lobby at the Wisma Sederhana gives a somewhat false impression that it is more luxurious than it actually is. I think of this as quite a simple quest house. The room felt very low budget - kind of old and rundown and not very comfortable. From that point of view, it is a simple guest house.
      It feels like the simple guest houses that were popular with backpackers are disappearing. They don't exist anymore. Low budget options are now at the level of the Wisma Sederhana. I often managed to reserve this room at a reasonable price of 100,000 rupiah (about $6 US), and that's as cheap as you can find these days. There's nothing below that unless you are willing to take a bed in a dorm room. And with all my camera and video-editing gear, I can't really do that. 🤪

    Would have been a better video of the food with the spoon taken out.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I thought about taking out the spoon once I started shooting the video. But it was too late. And I thought if I removed the spoon and put it on the table or something, people would think it was not hygienic. You can't win either way. 😀

      I have seen many photos of bowl of noodles with spoon and even a chopsticks on them. I think the problem is your spoon is not in an artistically position. 🤣
