      Ha ha ha Hart TakAda! I also noticed that Kai didn't really crap over Sony as he usually does, besides in the first couple of minutes. After that he just praises the A7r and A7. So that must mean that they are *really* good cameras!

    Being in a photo school, we actually had a SONY representative coming over and showing off his products (especially the A7, A7R and A7S). I'm not much of a SONY fan, but I was really impressed with the electronic viewfinder. I don't remember which one I tried out after that, but I think it was the A7S; this thing is super speedy. I loved the colors on the A7R though. But considering the price, I think I'd rather directly go for a full frame body of the company I'm with instead of buying this camera and then having to buy an adaptor on top of it.
    By the way, the 'E' mount is for 'eighteen', which is the number of mm between the lens mount and the sensor. Bit of trivia left by the SONY rep here xD

    You wanted to hate it so badly, but you just couldn't! It is a fantastic camera, and there is no competitor in the same league. The only other similar idea is the new Nikon, but that's an ugly beast of a brick that's double the size of the A7!

    What really drives me nuts about reviews with EVF cameras is no one talks about how powerful manual focus through the viewfinder becomes. Don't get me wrong, I use and enjoy both optical and EVF, there are simply a lot of things being left out here and elsewhere. In my time with my a77, the ability to preview images, zoom in to check focus on past images, switch back to live mode, digital-zoom in real time to adjust focus for absolute accuracy and take a new photo, all without removing my eye from the viewfinder (and QUICKLY) is a massive feature. Just being able to preview and look through my pictures in the viewfinder alone is a huge feature, I almost never use the articulating screen on the a77, only for extreme situations. Fast digital zoom (with quickly selectable zoom region mind you - huge feature) and focus peaking through the EVF has allowed me to shoot completely in manual focus without any worries at all. I just wanted to point this all out to people who may not realize its functions. My next camera will likely be a 6D based on cost, low light performance, and my preference for color and image quality. However, the advantages of the EVF and manual focus have made this a very hard decision to make. If Sony could have made the a99/a7 able to compete at ISO 3200-12800 they would really changed things. For those wondering, the nikon series with focus assist (D700, D750, & others, not sure which) is OK for helping to achieve focus and the only real middle ground. Here a small set of arrows tells you which way to focus based on your selected point (a bit like an instrument tuner), however, on the D750 at least this tool is in the very bottom corner of the viewfinder which makes it hard to use quickly or while composing. Hope this helps for manual focus fans, great review otherwise guys!

      You're damn right about thay! The EVF have also revolutionized the mirrorless technology. DsLR are now for consumers!

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    What I dislike with the Sony a7 series full frame mirrorless cameras is the lack of a full frame FE pancake lens.
    If Sony wants a real small and light full frame mirrorless camera, it shouldn't have neglected the pretense of FE pancake lens.
    The Sony APS-C crop frame mirrorless cameras have two pancake lenses. The SEL16F28 and the more expensive and sharper SEL20F28. Both are compatible with Sony a7 but in crop mode which delivers 2.4 times less resolution and sharpness.
    Sony A7 series has 6 models and only 11 FE full frame lenses. Five of the eleven lenses are the expensive Zeiss ones, which have similar focal lengths with the native Sony ones.
    So the real variety is smaller.
    Sony has a bigger number APS-C lenses which can be used with Sony a7 series. Nevertheless the quality is by far worst.

    • @KingAllpha321
      @KingAllpha321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How's sony doing now with their mirrorless cameras? :)

    • @AgnostosGnostos
      @AgnostosGnostos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      DangerMan V DangerMan V Sony a7 series was launched with the small and light Sony Zeiss FE 35mm f/2.8 T* ZA in 2003. Actually this lens is made in Japan. Maybe the only full frame e-mount lens by Sony made in Japan.
      Sony indeed is the king of mirrorless cameras nowadays but I miss a full frame pancake lens.
      Sony has two APS-C e-mount pancake lenses. The 16mm f/2.8 and 20mm f/2.8.
      After the first generation of the Sony a7 series the following full frame mirrorless cameras were gradually heavier and bigger.
      What I like with full frame mirrorless cameras is good performance at smaller and lighter combination of lens and camera body.
      The rumored forthcoming smaller and lighter full frame mirrorless Sony a5 camera will be combined with a pancake lenses. It will be a dream camera.

    A humble request to digitalrev: Do some reviews on pocket travel-zoom cameras. I know, I know, these tiny sensor cameras don't produce APS-C quality results, but it is also a fact that SLRs can't be lugged everywhere or where discretion is absolutely necessary. Hope you would seriously consider doing such reviews in the near future. And while you're at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea on doing a review on Sony's RX-10 bridge camera. I hope I'm not asking too much from you guys. Thanks in advance.

    Only issue I have - no longer a valid one as Sony released an excellent fully electronically integrated A -mount adapter- is the new FE mount.
    Sony simply do not have enough FE lenses to make the full frame sensor size of A7. On the other side, the old minolta a-mount lenses are still quite excellent and FF. My question is why not just release A7 series as a-mount camera, and instead of making FE series lenses, make new a-mount lenses that have advanced electronic features the new FE lenses have. Then if people REALLY want to use E-mount lenses, get E-mount to A-mount adapter.
    Just a small gripe as the small FE lens selection means 99% of people are buying the a-mount adapter... having e-mount compatibility in my opinion is just not necessary.

      Because they have different flange distance.
      A mount has 44.5 mm flange distance vs the 18 mm on the E mount. It is therefore considerably easier to make small lenses and wide-angle lenses for the E-mount. To make the camera for the A mount would basically be the same as shipping it with a glued on adapter since it would need to extend 26.5 cm further away from the sensor.

      i use it now since nearly 6 months, and (for photography) it's really great! I found the old lenses and cameras from my grandfather (yes, even a Leica :D) and i can use them all on the A7 with Adapters. Really nice.
      The image quality of the A7 (sharpness, dynamic range, color rendition) is a huge step compared to the cameras i was used to. You can easily push up the image by 2 or 3 EV in post if you use low ISO without getting too noisy images.
      My favourite lens is the 50mm 1.4 Rollei Planar HFT, basically a Zeiss Planar from the 80s i think. Extremly sharp and wonderfull bokeh.
      The only downside of the A7 is the missing image stablizer. With old lenses, it is nearly impossible to film handheld without getting shaky images. The A7 II must be a lot better in this regard (also because it uses the better video codec).

      So you wanna do both video And photography? 600 more is a lot, depending from your priorities i would rather save that money and invest it in some nice lenses or Equipment.

    Thank You Lok for sharing your experience in such a clear manner :) i always use your video tips for my small film company. You should make another video shooting tips guide as well as a video accessories recommendation special! Kai you are hilarious man, never change. Intelligence and humor in a person are a rare combo, well done kai, well done.

    The a7r w/ the new zeiss 55 1.8 is the best combo I've ever tried…
    Including the 5d mmiii w/ 50mm 1.2 or the nikon d800e w/ 24-70mm f2.8 or 50mm 1.4… hands down
    BUY IT!!!

    Hello, I have a question about your video recording. Lok, do you use ND filters when filming Kai, and what you do if you shoot video in one time and exposure must be changed? I just saw when the scene is too bright you make some things to make the exposure darker (do you change your shutterspeed or aperture?) And what is the rule of thumb (24fps = 1/50(60) shutter speed) in that way?

    • @ingaman
      @ingaman 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if DRTV will reply your comment, but maybe I can jump in. You're right about the double the fps for shutter speed rule. It's mostly for capturing moving objects and reducing rolling shutter. ND filters are great, but Lok seems to mostly close the aperture. You can tell because nearly everything is in focus. If Lok used ND filters, there'd probably be more depth of field, which would generally look more cinematic, but also take a very long time to shoot as Kai moves around a lot.

      @JimBlind 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for reply. I think that Lok closes aperture too, but just in case wanted to ask. I think there will be the good way to use Fader ND filters. As I can see you can change intensity of the filter while filming without removing it from the camera and you can still get the good shallow depth of field. Hope to collec some money to get one, but it will be after couple of leses :)

      Jim Blind According to the pro tog cheap cam challenge with...that American guy with the Lego camera...Lok uses ND filters too.

      Yes I do use 1/50s shutter speed, and use ND fader (variable ND filter) to control exposure most of the time, except when it's very cloudy, or indoor. ND fader change exposure gradually while aperture change in steps (except for cinematography lenses)

      ingaman I use ND fader and f/5 most of the time. There is still a little bit of blurry background, it just easier to focus and to my taste I don't want it to be shallow DOF all of the time, especially when you want to see Kai taking photos plus his subject. When there are B-roll stuffs, close up of Kai using the camera, etc. you would see I use shallow DOF

    Very nicely done - fun video with just the right amount of fun to keep it light. What are your thoughts on the A7s? Any good for stills, or really focused just on video? I like the idea of very, very low light shooting!

    I have both, I use the a7 80% of the time with the 55 1.8 Zeiss, just because the focus speed makes such a difference, forget the kit lens on the a7 and wait for the new zooms coming, they wont be cheap. But with these sensors you wont want to use all your lenses, half wont be good enough. If I have a portrait shoot, and the subject is still and I have time for set up, I use the a7r, and again with the 55 1.8. No reason to take it off really, until a proper zoom shows up. This is the best auto focus lens in the world, and I think 4th overall , its off the charts on sharpness. I use the LE4 adapter for my A mount lenses only 2 or 5 lenses do the sensor justice, I have an a77 and with the LE4 adapter on the a7 with the mirrorless ability, it focuses 90% as fast as the a77. So if your in a studio, go a7r, if your in a real world photography, moving around, images not still go a7 save the money and get the 55 1,8 Zeiss. By the way the 7r must have the best glass you can find or there is no point in getting it. You get no advantage of that sensor with a common lens. I apc crop the a7 @ 10mp using the a77 kit lens that great 16-50 2.8 apc sure its 10mp, but position yourself correctly and the pics are still great. Seriously consider the a7 unless you just have to have HUGE images and you have $2,000 lenses laying all over the place.
