    Despite the difficulties encountered, you showed how to overcome them with patience and skill. A great lesson in perseverance. A fantastic series It's helped me shake off the "colly wobbles" and not to rush. A lovely looking Camel !!!

    Hopefully this will be my first WNW kit as I - fingers crossed - just got one from stock that Hannants acquired. I think I may get some aftermarket decals. 😱😅

      Thank you Ken. Honestly is always the best policy in my eyes. Besides, if can save another modeller any problems then great…

    I learned more from watching your build than I have from dozens of similar videos where everything seems to go perfectly. I'm sorry for the hinky decals which were certainly a curse, but I am so impressed by your skill in saving what could have been a disaster.. I know darn well how badly this all would have turned out had I been in your shoes! Great work. Beautiful build.

      That’s the kind of comment that keeps me going Mark, thank you very much. Binning the kit did go through my mind that’s for sure

      @@TimsScaleModelling Binning the kit.. that's exactly what would have happened had I been struggling with those decals. BTW, I hope you'll do some more Wingnut Wings builds on your channel. I have 4 of those kits waiting on my hobby table and I'm going to summon the courage to start on them some day... been practicing on WWI Eduard kits in the meantime. Cheers!

      Eduard’s 1/48 scale biplanes are fantastic to practice your techniques on. Also they’re great models in their own right. I have a few knocking around. I have no plans as yet to build my two remaining WNW kits but you never know….

    Really felt for you with the decal debacle. You pulled it back magnificently though Tim, hats off to you. Model looks gorgeous. Excellent build. Looking forward to the next one.

    You have a lot more patience and talent than I do. I would have trashed the decals and ordered some aftermarket.Great looking build. I have started and stopped on the William Barker snipe a couple times.

    I built a 2F1 Camel last year, and had the same problem with the large roundels breaking up. WNW had a bad batch of decals made, which made their way into several kits. They suffered from a lack of plasticiser I was advised, making them very brittle. Wingnuts eventually replaced mine in the July.

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, not me then! They were terrible

    • @pauladams2907

      @@TimsScaleModelling Certainly not. Most of the Camel kits had the problem. Oddly, the smaller ones on my sheet were fine.

    beautifully successful project. I have now built four of these WNW models and apart from the Junkers JI had no problems with the decals. At Junkers, despite tons of plasticizers (Mr. Hobby, Tamiya and Microscale), the decals did not want to get into the corrugated iron structure of the wings and tore after drying. Large decals (e.g. Lozenge at LVG C.VI) were easy to process ...

      Thank you Christian. I am hoping that these were a bad batch or something, it won’t put me off though...

    Beautiful build, with the decals they could just be old , only ever had that problem with the revell stuff , ive heard the trick is to use colder water than normal but ive never tried it myself .

      im wondering if the decal sheet itself could use a few coats of Decal Maker solution to re-strenen them before use ?

    Lovely build. Sadly I have never built WNW but decals on ICM kits can be a nightmare. Brush painting or making up templates for airbrushing. I did the latter for. Whitney build when decals went awry.

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Decs, yes ICM decals aren’t much better. Had a bad experience using them on the first Gladiator, so much I bought Xtradecal ones to replace them on the second Gladiator. The Xtradecal one were almost no different!! I am unlucky with bloody decals mate.

    I have had the same problem with WingNut Wings decals on another model. I emailed WNW about this and they stated that there is no problem they are aware of since the decals are of a high quality and that was that. No help at all.

    Regardless of the troubling decals you've done a stellar job on the camel, Tim. I really enjoyed watching this series and hope that another may come in the distant future. Pity about the decals though.....I've built a number of WNW kits and have had no problems with the decals....mind you, they were some of the very early kits (Albatros D V, Sopwith Triplane and Rumpler C IV) so wonder if the later ones were an indication of the troubled times for WNW before it all upended. Anyway...thanks for sharing this build....the result is outstanding!

    But it looks good in the end!

    Some Wingnut Wings kits, such the Camels and Dolphin, apparently suffered from a lack of plastisizer, causing them to become brittle. I had similar problems as had other modelers. Other Wingnut kits were ok.

  • @tintopslotcar

    Red decals can be an absolute nightmare especially as they age. It seems that the red pigment reacts with the waterproof coating and if you inspect the decals on the paper backing with a magnifying glass you will see the fine crack lines. The older the decal the more cracked it can be. Old Caligraphe decals printed in France are the worst ones I have come across.

    No, you don't "Need" to decal over a gloss surface, but I think you've just shown why people do.

  • @ABRaingutters
    @ABRaingutters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Every set of instructions on a decal set says to apply a code of gloss before you apply the decals so they don't stick to the dry paint and tear.
    So most of this third video is complaining about things that probably would remedy if you simply follow the instructions?
    I've recently purchased four wingnut Wing kits and I'm like others waiting for the skills to crack them open and just enjoying the packaging and the instruction manual

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn’t so much them not sticking more that they broke up. Gloss coats aren’t really necessary for decals in my experience but having said I’m starting to go back to using gloss but more of a sealer and models are much nicer to handle. You’ll have to break one open one day. If you wait you might never be ready AB

    Arnt they cardiograph decals?

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Ken, I don’t think they were. Chatting to another lad and it seems they had a bad batch of decals. If WNW were still around, you’d be able to get a replacement set.
