My early aviation roots were grounded in WWI model aircraft and crop dusting biplanes (converted Stearman biplanes). It was 1959 when I began spending summers on my grandparents farm in North Louisiana. A crop dusting airstrip was just across the highway about 1 mile from the farmhouse. Every morning the crop dusters would roar right over our roof at about 80 feet AGL enroute to spray neighboring fields. Cotton was the crop of that decade and DDT was the weapon of choice against the dreaded boll weevil. After waving to nearly every pilot coming and going I would retreat to our huge front porch where my older uncle helped me assemble many Aurora and other fighter plane kits. Each airplane was built with beautiful paint jobs and rigging. When I returned home after summer my mother would hang my models from long threads run across my bedroom ceilings. The aircraft were hung with great care in flight poses chasing each other in dramatic dog fights. The Fokker Triplane diving on my favorite Nieuport 11 was heart wrenching! But the little Nieuport remained aloft for years, the Fokker pilot must not have been a good marksman. Same was true with the Sopwith Camel after the Albatross and the Spad after the Fokker. I also had a Gotha bomber up there and an English bomber that I do not recall it's manufacture. My friends would come often to lay on twin beds beneath the action making machine gun sound effects as we flew those airplanes countless times. This video constructing a marvelous example of a Sopwith Camel brings back many happy memories. Especially since all of my models disappeared into no man's land, that thing that occurs when an oldest son marries and leaves a mother's nest. This phenomenon is much more dangerous than an encounter with the Red Barron! The last I saw of my wonderful airplane models was back in 1972. At least I went on to build and fly many R/C airplanes until I got my private pilot's license in 1977. Then I had the privilege of waving out the open door of my Piper Cub to little boys and girls that might be inspired to fly themselves someday by my flying over and wagging my wings in a friendly gesture of friendship.

Superb tutorial Tim. I'm a tad "hamfisted" when it comes to building WW 1 aircraft but watching this has given me a little more confidence as I slowly go about building my WNWs Sopwith Camel.

Many thanks Rashomon. It’s quite a basic technique, one I need more practice on but quite happy how it turned out.

Just been waiting for part 2, Tim.....beautiful job....love the painting of the wood...very effective. I think anyone who builds a WNW kit is inspired to build more....a pity they've gone and the ones for sale on ebay etc are very pricey. I am lucky living in Australia.....jumped onto the WNW bandwagon when they they first started and the kits were much, much cheaper and free delivery. Anyway....you are doing a great job on this kit so will be hanging out to see episode 3.

Ta Robbo, appreciate that mate. I know, such a shame, hope fully they’ll reappear buy someone else. They always were on the expensive side tho especially if ones been used to 25 quid kits...

Interesting to hear about the abt 503 oils! I was saying in my club I was away to pick some sets up and a few if the guys told me not to there not as good as the normal artist oils like Windsor Newton! But I like to try new products all the time, like mig ammos oil brushers I ordered a load of them and I think there brilliant! I don't use that brush thing but use my normal brushes I really like it it dries pretty fast!

The Abt 503 are excellent Bonsai, much better than the W&N oils, I find them a bit gritty. The 503’s are formulated for our needs after all. It’s not really cost effective to change over for me now, but I may pick up a couple of 503 colours now and then…

It’s looking great, the hardest part for me with biplanes is attaching both wings together

Being Wingnut that should be ok...clumsiness is my issue Epic

Did you have to worry about the paint effecting the fit - sanding edges etc - looked like it was ask from what I see here. At first I thought the abseiling paint was a bit thick in application but that too looked ace when completed - going to get myself one of them there fan brushes. Shaping up nicely Tim, got me own Camel somewhere should start it really. By for now Sir.

Abteilung oil is mustard Dave. I’d replace my Windsor and Newton’s if I had a mind to. Yeah it’s all a right fit but nothing to really worry about. Laters

@@TimsScaleModelling Already on that one Ted I even used them to refurbish a porch support post, real life wood effects! Fan brush though, thats the new gadget for me to get, probably just for the hell of it. Keeeep building Tim - another vid for tonight would be good, LOL.
