If I was told I could apprentice with any one bladesmith in history, this man is on the top of a very exclusive list!

Bill Moran (Uncle Bill) was my godfather. He and my Dad were good ol' Western Maryland mountain boys in their youths. Going into his shop was like walking back into history. They don't show the exterior, but the building itself was an whitewashed, stone building over 200 years old. And you had to watched where you stepped, because it was a dirt floor and he always had a chaw in and spit freely. :) He was an amazing artist and craftsman. He would have been 79 when this video was made.

I wish he would have been my grandfather there's no way I'd be doing anything else but fallowing in his footsteps but my grandfather was a good teacher i learned how to do plumbing and house framing I'd much rather have had the knowledge of your grandfather the legendary knife maker Bill

We were friends of Bill's way back in the mid-60s. He was an amazing man. We visited his shop quite a few times and he was kind enough to gift me a dagger he made out of an icepick. I still carry it with me every day. He always gave us fresh corn from the little garden he had on the side of his shop, it was the freshest sweetest corn I've ever eaten. I treasured my friendship with Bill and have thought of him often.

That power hammer is so incredible! I love the "Old Ways" look of it. :)
And it's always good to see the look on a smith's face that he really does enjoy the work. :)

I ordered one in the late 70's from him and he wrote back and said he was at least 25 years behind on his orders. I ordered anyway, against all hope, which it turned out to be.

This is a different video than the "Making of a Knife " video of Bill Moran. This video is a documentary produced by the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies and Frederick Community College with assistance from the Maryland Historic Trust and Maryland State Arts Council and uploaded with their permission.
