Great to watch, i think you're really honouring Bill with your attitude and respect to his work. Walking in his footsteps, not trying to wear his shoes.
and also the level of elbow grease, holy moly. these days you think there is a drill or a some kind of power tool for everything. nope, take a file in your hand and get started. respect
i love that you went so far into giving this knife this identity, it came out so good and some true oldschool vibe, if seeing it in a museum i'd take it as a true master piece, no doubt
Beautiful work as always. It was a pleasure to meet you and Chris at the Reynoldsville PA meet last year. Little tip for tapping. Before cutting the pommel from your piece in the lathe, use a center in the tailstock. Line that with the divot in your T handle tap wrench to keep everything straight. Just lightly dial your center forwards as you tap. Also look for some spiral modified bottom taps. Emuge and Gurhing are two I use often at work. For a blind hole they pull the chips out like a drill shaving and save you a lot of cleaning. One tap in the lathe like I described will do it all from start to finish. Eliminate a step, and have more accurate results.
Mr. Moran was a truly talented and generous bladesmith. I had the pleasure of taking a class he taught many years ago. Hea passed around 1 of his fantastic quillion daggers for us to look at. A photo of which is most likely in your book. The last day of the class he demonstrated how he did silverwire inlay and passed around the brass patterns he used for layout so we could make drawings in order make our own patterns. Your knife is a fantastic piece.
Analysis of Bill Moran’s knives and his Damascus was one of the closest representations of original Damascus. Where other people make that beautiful pattern Bill Moran actually had the carbon content almost precise. The piece you made is very nice
Congratulations, Matt!!! I've watched your journey for a long time now and truly believe you've earned every accolade you've received with many more to come so long as you never stop dreaming. You are an inspiration, cheers!!!
Met Bill in 1996 at the blade show as a12 year old who had every issue of blade magazine. He did a quick forging demonstration on a piece of mild steel. After the show he met my dad and I and gave me the knife he had forged. It was a prized possession for years. It was stolen in a box of knives that my dad and I made together 15 or so years ago. I'm sure the thief had no idea about the piece of history and tossed it out. Also met Dan Dennehey and he taught me how to throw knives his way. It was a great experience. Met Gil Hibben, he was super nice also.
Congratulations Matt, it's nice to see your dedication and skill get recognized. Keep up the awesome work! Also i find your personality really endearing! :)
Matt, I just wanted to say there was so much history and key points you brought into this project that I just loved. You seem to be a really humble and genuine guy and that charisma shows in your work. Great job on the knife, but an even better job making the artistic connection to the ABS founder in a good story. I don't know if you wrote the concept out for the filming, or had someone direct it, but that was really movie quality man. Good work.
Ah thank you! I produced it all myself from head to toe. I don't write things out. I just film making it and hopefully a story follows the flow of the build. In this case I had so much to say that I had to eliminate a ton.
@@ThatWorks Well dude, you nailed it. I am sure your path to MS is coming along well. I am watching every video I can on tips and techniques, and I like the way you teach. I know you said in your videos you hope to impart some knowledge on folks, and its obvious that people are taking things away from your comments and views. If you ever get the chance, Id love to see some advice on tips you would have for guys pursuing the ABS certs.

I didn't even know about such technique as inlaying metal into the handle! Very cool! Also, amount of work that you did to make this knife is inspiring. Amazing dedication and amazing result.
Yea, I knew about the inlay but had never even thought to try it. Now that I have done it, I cant stop looking at wooden things and thinking about what I could inlay onto them. Thank you!
What a beautiful tribute ⚒️⚔️🔪🗡️🇮🇪🍀🙏😁👍💪💥💥💥Sir I knew without a doubt you would win with this Bowie. Again beautiful work you deserve all the praise that comes your way. Even I thought the same thing that Bill Moran would appreciate this fine work! Bravo!!!!!!!
Wow babe! I was blown away when I got to see that knife but to watch all the work you did to make it… I’m so impressed by you! I’m also so proud of you for pushing outside your comfort zone, learning more and growing as a maker. ❤ so awesome!!
When you talk about Moran introducing Damascus to modern bladesmithing I'm reminded how there's one Wikipedia editor who is *really* salty about how "Damascus" in modern use means pattern-welded steels rather than the swords and knives forged in the Levant by smiths using both imported wootz steel and locally sourced iron that it's named after due to the very fine pattern visible on those blades. Seriously, while I haven't looked at the page in ages, there was some major WELL, ACTUALLY energy happening there 😂
Wow. Just wow... A couple of mishaps with the silver inlays in the handle. Which I know is almost impossible to get perfect. Other than that, just pure perfection. Love the angled style of the handle. A bit coffin-like.
