    Man, you had your hands full in this busy airspace, shades of Air Venture. Processing all the staccato ATC information accurately near a big airport is no place for the unprepared or one of slow mental agility. A copilot in this case would have reduced the sweat factor for sure. I can’t imagine doing this flight 20 years ago with paper charts and old radios-without the aid of modern GPS and other electronic nav tools-and one pilot. The airport itself is so large that it requires a “taxi plan”. GPS/airport diagram a godsend for a busy complex environment. Your commendable pilot proficiency skills are all there for the world to see. Your video production involving various cameras, focal points, closeups, text notations, all thoughtfully and professionally produced. You’ve set a high bar. Anyone watching your vids is learning A LOT.

    One of the hazards of receiving instructions from ground control at very busy airports is often confusion with the pilot due to unfamiliarity and directions that sometimes don't make sense from a controller. They are busy and sometimes we just can't comply with their wishes. He was confused as to where you were heading and could have caused a problem with that jet. You did a nice job of diplomatically handling the confusion. Good example of why we always need to be on our A Game even on the ground. Well done Martin!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Preston - though I believe I should have asked the controller for clarification a bit sooner, instead of just heading down taxiway Alpha without really knowing where I was going.

      I'm a big believer in checklists. They work for the pros, so they'll help me as well. I realize I am not perfect, therefore the checklist can help me when I miss something. I know some pilots think they don't need that - at least until they land gear up one day. :-)

    Martin, another great video. 19:45 A couple ForeFlight tips (in addition to my tip last week on FBO display on the Airport Diagram): (1) on the main Maps tab, turn off (deselect) the VFR Sectional (I only use that when looking for the name of a river, lake, whatever) and just display the Aeronautical map... also (2) click the Gear, then Airspace and make sure Auto-Highlight is on. The Aeronautical map gives all you really need on the map, and the Auto-Highlight dims any airspace that you are not near (vertically and laterally)... a greatly uncluttered view so that just the important stuff, e.g. Traffic, is much more visible.

    Most ATC induced errors occur on ground control from my experience. This guy got himself totally confused and changed the taxi instruction from Hotel to Lima. He also told you to give way to the Lear which you correctly questioned when he changed the plan. Note this is a hotspot (HS1) on the taxi diagram. Probably due to ATC induced errors such as this one. Good job. One suggestion: Before starting to taxi be sure you have the route clear on the chart and are not guessing along the way. That way you would have realized that Lima was his error and corrected it immediately. I know this is easy to point out here but not so easy when in the cockpit single pilot. Airlines have the advantage of two pilots which I always recommend when going to busy airports -just for the taxiing. Hey did you go into that Delta airspace VFR before contacting the tower? Just kidding.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ron,
      Regarding the radios: in my Bonanza, COMM1 is wired to an antenna on the bottom of the fuselage, COMM2 to an antenna on the roof. Therefore, COMM1 works best in the air, while COMM2 is my preferred radio on the ground.

    Excellent vid, I've flown over ORD many times on IFR departures to the south from PWK. Every time it's amazing. There are lots of engine-out landing spots available when one is over such a big airport. I like the tail cam. Why do you choose to point it to the rear as opposed to forward?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I first pointed the tail camera backwards to recreate a scene from Top Gun, looking back at the carrier after take-off. OK, not QUITE the same in the Bonanza compared with the F-14, but I liked the look. So I've done it a few times since then. It also helps with sunlight: If my flight is into the sun, it's very hard to get a crisp picture of anything in front of me, but the tail camera will pick it up perfectly. So I get at least one good angle of whatever interesting things I'm flying over.

      Martin Pauly I like how it looks too. I have a tail camera as well. I point it forward just from the reflex to “look forward”. But it gets dirty in flight so landings after a long flight look foggy. I like seeing the landing gear in the video and the people that see the video seem able to appreciate the frame of reference provided by the landing gear. But I see your perspective and I’ll try that.

    Charterst du die Bonanza eigentlich oder ist das deine eigene ?

      Die gehört seit 2012 mir. Davor war ich in Vereinen und Haltergemeinschaften, allerdings nicht mit einer Bonanza sondern diverse Piper Flugzeuge.

      Martin Pauly Cool wie würdest du die Piper Flugzeuge fliegerisch am besten im Vergleich zur Cessna 172, 152 beschreiben ?, ich selbst mache gerade PPL-A muss leider aktuell mit der Ausbildung pausieren, wegen dem Virus wurden VFR Schulflüge in D-Land untersagt. Ich will allerdings nachdem ich den Schein habe eventuell eine Piper Archer bei mir am Platz ab und an chartern.

      @@skyhawkpilot3608 Das ist sicher subjektiv. Ich finde, die PA28 fliegen stabiler als die Cessnas und sind vor allem bei windigem Wetter leichter zu beherrschen, vor allem am Boden (rollen). Als Pilot gefällt mir auch die Sicht aus einem Tiefdecker besser, vor allem in Kurven - wobei die Passagiere natürlich die Sicht aus einem Hochdächer bevorzugen. Ich bin sehr gerne mit der Archer geflogen, auch mit der Warrior (etwas weniger PS). Im Moment mache ich meine Fluglehrerausbildung auf einer Arrow, weil meine Bonanza rechts keine Bremsen hat.
      Viel Erfolg mit dem PPL-A!

      Au contraire - this flight was on February 21st. This was before the US was impacted by COVID-19, certainly before any air travel in the US was affected.
