The FA needs someone in charge who is harmless, dull as dishwater, boring, says the right things, ticks the right boxes, has zero personality and no sense of individuality so from that point of view Southgate is the perfect man for the job.

It's really easy to be critical. Let me guess, you asked for proven international managers when McClaren and Hodgson failed? Then you moaned about not having an English manager when Sven and Capello failed? The reason why England have had two of their four best finishes in 38 competitions is partly down to Southgate building a team; bedding in a huge pool of players, and having an ethos. For Le Tissier to say he could have had the same success is simply ridiculous and anyone who thinks he could is a moron; just think about it, a man who has never managed a team thinking he could manage England to a final, semi final and quarter final. It's incredible arrogance and laughable. Le Tissier, if you really think that then why don't you go into management? You won't because you know how hard it is and you know the majority of managers fail, and your insights are banal and cliche, and you've don't have any tactical awareness.

For anybody over the age of 60, over the years they have witnessed the FA appoint 'yes men'.... and Southgate is one of those.
Southgate's has two weak points - he is too loyal - picking players that aren't in form and when it comes to major tournaments he acts like a coach, not a manager - he can't react to the opposing teams tactics.

  • @lovejoy3347

Le Tiss is right about Southgate. It's not just about the squad full of quality players we have now, it's our relative position in comparison to other international teams which is more the issue. There's only France, on paper, who arguably have a better squad and first XI than us. This has never been the case with past England teams. Even with the so called 'Golden Generation' there were much better international teams than us around. Southgate brings no value and, in fact, I would argue his poor decision making, lack of tactical awrenesss and rabbit-in-the-headlights mentality in high-pressure scenarios completely handicaps us. I think he's actually stopping us winning these tournaments because if we actually possessed a manager who's abilities matches the players, we would have won something over the last 3 tournaments. It will be the same excuses this Summer. Southgate should be nowhere near the England set-up now. Should have got sacked after Euro 2020 and most definitely after those 4 ridiculous Nations League back-to-back results in the Summer of 2022, culminating in a 4-0 home loss to Hungary.

Defence was Croatia's weakest area but they weren't given enough to do. Italy has too old, slow Centre Backs. At 1-0 down Italy needed to commit players forward and they were ripe for picking off. If you don't exploit your opponents weakness and don't give them something to worry about the inevitable happens. Eriksson, Capello and Hodgson all did it too. While they didn't win anything either, at least Robson, Venables, Hoddle and Keegan sent out teams to win. When they lost it was down to misfortune or simply being beaten by a better team. He is more concerned with not conceding goals rather than scoring. The players he doesn't favour sit on the bench whilst he relies on players who played like him. If he keeps picking these favourites we will not win anything, but his runner up record will continue. I hope the FA board reflect and think about winners, not nice guys, next time. And will continue to be that way as Southgate is too negative and cautious in his approach against such opposition. He's spot on about England under Southgate. They've beaten the teams they would be expected to beat, but lost to higher ranked teams despite going ahead. England could still win the Euros this year, but I feel that might be despite of, rather than because of the manager, as they have such an array of talent at their disposal.

(BTW: Hull City also did this in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal in 2014 they found themselves 2 nil up and made the suicidal decison after 8 mins to defend for 82 minutes, same mistake: acting like you're in a league)

Southgate is the weak link in the England team. He is the right man for the FA but not for the team, he doesn’t give the FA any problems off the pitch and is a yes man but he can’t inspire a team during hard times and is tactically very poor.
I’m a Middlesboro fan and the fact he was average for us and lacks experience managing even a domestic team successfully makes it seem all the crazier that he is England manager.

A lot of top teams have had similar experiences in this tournament and it’s obviously because of the structure of the group stage.
Southgate is the most successful manager of England since 1966. His defensive tactics are clearly successful at ensuring Englands progression to the latter stages of the tournaments he has led. It’s boring but it works.

Le Tiss says Southgate is too cautious / pragmatic and believes a more adventurous manager would be better. A manager who would go for the win and try to force a positive outcome. I find that a bit of a strange view coming from someone who done the exact same thing himself. Big clubs would have taken Le Tiss, and there were chances to move during his playing career. But he remained in his comfortable surroundings at Southampton, where he was the big fish in a small pond. Rather than be adventurous and testing himself elsewhere. I remember the links to some of the bigger clubs where he would have played with better players and, undoubtedly, would have had a better chance of winning some medals. Im old enough to remember Le Tiss during his whole playing career, and there were periods when he was simply unplayable, a pleasure to watch. But he could have done so much more.
