- Braces Explained: Color and Steel Ligature Ties
In this video I will be answering the question of “what are the color things on my teeth?” and “what are steel ties?” Also I will be touching on what self ligating braces are, such as Damon and Speed brackets
As I reviewed in previous videos, orthodontic wires want to return to their original shape. The goal is to have the teeth move with the wire, so to do that, we tie the teeth into the main wire. We can do this in three main ways:
1] Elastomeric color o-rings. These are placed around each bracket and tie each tooth to the main wire. They come in many different colors and if they need to be tied in a bit more tightly, they may be tied in a figure-8, which is shown in the video
2] Steel ligatures. These are used if a tooth needs to be tightened a bit more snugly into the arch wire.
3] Self-ligating braces. These braces actually have little doors on them which can be opened prior to putting in the wire and then shut, to ensure that the main wire stays tied into that tooth.

Dr. Greg Asatrian I have tried almost every color. I am wearing power chains now so I am limited on the colors my orthodontist provide. Would you suggest trying clear?

I thought that you get powerchains near the end of treatment where all of your teeth are in the final position
Yup same here. Turns out its just to close my gaps so it's being done early on. I won't get bands however until much later on like normal

I started following you from the beginning and it so happens I got my braces at the same time. These videos are so helpful and informative. Thank you! - the assistant mistakenly put in dark green o-rings even though I asked for teal. 🙄 So I’ve had to deal with it for 6 weeks. Next visit I’ll make sure they have the correct color I want.

I had steel shorties for all brackets on my 1st month, then got switched to clear o-rings plus a long steel ligature on my 3 lower front teeth on the 2nd month.
I have a stubborn tooth that's pointed inward so I have that tied to my round NiTi wire with a shorty too. I'm hoping it'll move soon, because i think it might hurt more when I switch to a thicker wire next month.

I had steel ligatures on on my two front teeth and it hurt so bad while putting them on i thought the orthodontist was gonna break my tooth😂 but I got them off a month or two ago but thanks for the great video!😁
I had steel ligatures on all my braces, honestly it didn't hurt that bad. On the other hand, my pain tolerance is insanely high
it didn't really hurt for me, but i was terrified because it sounded like she was breaking my teeth 😔😔

if there’s something I want to know about my braces I always come to your channel😂 I never needed braces until I had a few seizures and clenched my jaw so hard that my 4 front bottom teeth were falling out and loose! I’ve had braces for almost 2 months and they’ve already moved soooo much! I have light purple and a power chain on the bottom teeth that are loose and out of place. Thank you for your videos!

Love your videos. So informative. When I get something done, I Google why and your videos always appear. First time ever getting a steel tie with my second time with braces. Wish the tech person did put the wire in the back of the wire... mine is right in front and keeps pulling my lip when I smile. Next time if I get this done again I'll ask to tuck it in the back :)

It’s to put pressure on different sections of the bracket to pull the teeth in a certain direction, it’s usually used on shorter teeth or teeth that need to be pulled down to quicken the process. Hope this was helpful (:
I’m wearing gray power chain on the top and sliver regular ties on the bottom.
My favorite is light blue but they stain too easily so I don’t get that anymore.

It is the same as putting it on traditional braces or I think it is. Since I have Damon braces and a powerchain and all my ortho did was put it around my brackets.

I believe I'm on my final wires but wanted to know why my orthodontist may have used the steel ligature wire chain instead of the elastic colourful power chain? Any ideas? Your the only one on TH-cam who explains things in detail and so well :)
Ah thank you so much! The steel ligature wire is much more hygienic and easier to keep clean. Especially if you are just trying to hold the space closed

These videos are so informative. I’m wondering why the three different systems and if one is more effective than the other if so why would that not be the default system. Would be good to know the different scenarios where you need a rubber tie a steel one and also the Damon braces

omg last month when I got new o-rings they literally forgot to place one on the last bracket in the back and luckily I noticed while I was in the car before I left so I was able to go back. That brings me to my next question though, what if they placed the wire underneath a single bracket? Is that some procedure with a purpose or is it possible they mistakenly missed it? Thanks for all these informative and educational videos!!!
Sometimes it has the purpose of "extruding" a tooth to make more tooth available to reposition the bracket more towards the gums (check out the video on wire bending for more explanation)
Steel ligatures on the bottom and silver on top,to blend in of course.

We don't do surgeries but work with our colleagues to prescribe surgeries. Prior to becoming an orthodontist, you must be a dentist and have to perform dental and gum surgeries to become a dentist! I will definitely explain the process of becoming an orthodontist in a future video!
Hey doc, can you make a video describing the whole process for correcting an under bite? braces, upper/lower jaw surgery, recovery. I was supposed to get it done 6 years ago but I didn't want to go thru with it since it looked painful. Now, the underbite has actually gotten worse. In finally getting braces in a month, I'm super excited
There are many different ways to correct an underbite due to age / severity /etiology, etc. I will do some different videos on how to correct them as we move forward!
Are there multiple sizes for the Mathieu (ring holder). It seems you are using one that's much smaller than I'm use to seeing, but I like it because it seems to fit more comfortably in your hands and easier to control. I'm new to Ortho Assisting and I'm trying to learn good techniques to help me be more efficient. This is my first time watching your videos and I love them already! Thank you and keep them coming!!
There are a bunch of difference sizes yup. I personally prefer the finer tip mathieus but depends on your preference! Thank you so much for the support! I really appreciate it !

I’m currently in orange bands and I go back in two weeks and I’m thinking of getting black or pink. Also my canine teeth came down into position finally!!
I just have two gaps and then my midline is a bit off still, but I’m still wearing my bands but only at night now! So far it’s paid off. Can’t wait to see what they do in two weeks. I hope I’m close to the end 🤞🏼

Can you explain more on what the steel one is used for?
For example in past dentist appointments they put a few of them with steel and the most of them with the rubber ones.
Its for the teeth that need to be tied in really well to ensure that the wire is fully tied into the braces
I have only my ceramic brackets on the maxillary arch right now, separators on sept 9th, mandibular metal brackets on sept 11th! I opted for light pink so they won’t stain as bad hopefully as clear or white elastics :) dying to get my comfort tubing off cause it’s staining

Hi I'm going to get braces installed, and I have a question regarding the size of the things that tie the bracket with the steel wire. Which one of those *things* are the smallest and make the braces look small and thin when applied to the teeth. I'm super nervous and I just don't want to look weird in front of other people😅. And are do the smallest things come in white? I want them in white as it is the same color of my teeth and they won't *strike* out. Sorry if the question was super long. And nice video, you're really good at explaining things.

@@GGirlcutie That's what I did when I first got my braces too haha. In general lighter colours are prone to staining while darker colours wont. So if you pick navy blue you'll be fine, but baby blue stains way too easily

My ligature doesn't fit into one of the four side of the bracket, is that ok?

At my last adjustment they changed my rubberbands on my bottom teeth and I was in excruciating pain! I have a high pain tolerance and I feel like it isnt normal to hurt that bad when just changing rubberbands. They applied pressure on my teeth while changing them it used to give me relief before but not anymore. Is there something in my routine that I'm not doing right? Is there something I can do to prevent this? My tighting doesnt hurt as bad as this.

I was told the bottom teeth are more sensitive especially the front teeth.
Having any fillings will make your teeth more sensitive to.

Hello Dr. Greg!! I've been having my braces on since 2017 and had a lower incisor extracted and i had to leave my home city due to studies. But the gap didn't close up as i didn't go to another orthodontist for around 5 months. This January i went to an orthodontist and i had power chains and they closed within a month! I was so glad! And i have one upper incisor which is a little bit slanted and my doctor used a steel ligature on it. Now it's April and i have to go home by the end of the month. I have power chains on my upper teeth even though i have no gaps on it? And my doctor said he'll be removing my braces on the 17th of this month. I'm a little bit concerned because my mother was scared that he is rushing the treatment and that they will be removed before time; and i have to pay him for retainers which could be another reason why he'd be doing that. Can you please give me an advice? I am very worried and confused. Thank you for the awesome videos! I binged a lot >
Hi, I have few ligature ties on my brackets, and the brushing became very difficult in those areas. Maybe you have any suggestions please? 🙏
I understand how the wire pulls teeth forward or pushes them back to form the arch, but how does the wire pull teeth sideways? For example, I have one tooth (incisor) that is partially overlapped (occluded) behind another incisor. How is the wire able to pull it out from behind the forward tooth? BTW: Pale pink o rings!
I am planning for braces treatment and ur videos are very usefull for that so pls tell me Which braces u recommend Traditional braces which is cheaper or Self legating braces?
I usually prefer self ligating braces but they are more expensive for the doctor to purchase too because they are harder to make!
How often is the necessary dentist visit for follow up if wearing self-ligating braces?
