I served in the U.S. Army in Germany in a tank battalion from 86-89, right at the end of the Cold War. This song captures that time perfectly. I’m an old man now, but this song still brings a tear to my eye.

@@Calinn86 Pfft...the irony of you saying that on a Polish girl's channel... You do a great injustice to the truth -- which is that many people (e.g., Poles, Germans -- East and West, NATO soldiers and even Western taxpayers) sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to give us a world that is much better now, for more people, than it used to be. This is inarguable. Your energy would be better spent working on what remains to be done rather than attempting to deceive others in re what has been done.

This song always touches my heart as well. It was written shortly before the Berlin wall was taken down and with its timing and it's message of brotherhood/sisterhood it became something of an anthem for the fall of Communism. I'm both glad to see that it can still touch fresh listeners today. And saddened that its message of hope remains as needed today as it was back then.. But great reaction girl! And hope you explore more songs by this fabulous band!

This song always brings me back to the end of my teen years at the end of the 80's/start of the 90's. As you said it became practically an anthem, not only for the fall of communism/the Soviet Union, but all the changes which suddenly happened after decades of the Cold War and the world basically being quite nervous. The tearing down of the Berlin wall and reunification of Germany. The release of Nelson Mandela from imprisonment and a few years later the official end of apartheid in South Africa. The warming of relations between east and west (see the images of Gorbachev shaking hands with the Pope for example) and, yes, the fall of authoritarian communism and rise of democracy in many of the states formerly behind the "iron curtain". It seemed like the world was on the right track for a while there and we had reason to be optimistic about the future.

I sincerely loved your reaction! I served 10 years in the Royal Navy from 1981-1991. I spent almost all that time chasing Russian submarines and ships. After the Navy, I was very lucky to meet Klaus Mein. The lead singer, and thanked him for this song.

Scorpions are so good. This is probably their most beautiful song...and they have a good many. My two favorite albums of theirs are: Lovedrive __ Animal Magnetism. Saw them Live at US Festival '83 on my 21st B-Day. They were one of the best who performed Live that day, and there was a good lineup.

wow - a great & a very understandable reaction. As as our leaders drive us to frustration while delivering their own unique power crazed version of the world order.
Please I humbly suggest 'Scorpions - Wind Of Change (Live At Hellfest, 20.06.2015)' for a slightly different perspective on the same track - please no shame in letting the tears flow as it is a very understandable reaction

The timing of this song couldn't have been better. Released in Nov 1990, on the album entitled "Crazy World" (pretty fitting title for that time, as post-Cold War Europe was a mess) it came at a time when the Fall of the Soviet Union was in the air. The Berlin Wall fell a year before, in Oct 1989, and then the Soviet Union collapsed the next year in Dec 1991. I was a Senior in High School at this time, and was so hopeful about what the future would hold in the former Communist Block, but as Yeltsin's Reign in Russia came to and end with Putin taking over, that hope quickly faded even back then, because once a KFB agent, always a KGB agent. I tried giving Russia the benefit of the doubt as they were helping build and man the International Space Station, but with Putin's continued aggression into Chechnya, Georgia, and Ukraine, it's clear that Russia has not changed at all since the old days of the Soviet Union. The only real difference is that they aren't hard-core Communists anymore, and they're allowing religion, but other than that, they're still the same ol' Authoritarian Dictatorship that's Hell bent on re-establishing the Russian Empire.

Its amazing and encouraging to to watch someone be able to connect to the emotions of a momentI experienced when I was your age, some 35+years ago. I was serving in the US Navy when this song was written (89) and still serving when this song was released world wide in '91. This song was like 'crack cocaine' at the time...Those of us who grew up during the last 20 years of the Cold War, under the threat of nuclear war, every day. WE could not get enough of this SONG...

This song will always have a place in my heart. I was a dependent of an active duty Marine at the time and I lived daily with the knowledge that if the balloon ever went up we were gone. A military base would assuredly been targeted by ICBMs. The fall of the Wall and this song erased that terror. Never in all my years did I ever think we'd face that type of crisis again.
And yet, this song stands as a testament to people's desire to live in peace and prosperity.

This song and Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits gets me everytime. Served in US Marine Corp 86-90. There was such hope when the Berlin Wall came down. I had great hope when Poland broke away from USSR. I went to college with a man from Poland in 84. His family had smuggled him out just after the Solidarity movement. His father was a high ranking member in the Solidarity Movement. Michael told me that one night, Soviet men in suits showed up for his father. That was the last time that he saw his dad.
