I'm actually kinda surprised you haven't listened to The Scorpions! They were HUGE in the 80s and 90s even here in the States. Definitely one of the best 80s rock bands! Definitely check out their song "Still Loving You" as that is arguably one of their top songs of all time (along with the always popular "Rock You Like a Hurricane".

I haven’t heard this song in years. My memories of that time all came flooding back.
I have the album this is on. Wish I still had a turn table so I can listen to it.
All the younger listeners have missed out on a lot of great music.
Music started to all sound the same and no originality around 2000 and I stopped listening until I stumbled across BTS in 2017. Their music is reminiscent of the late 80s & early 90s.
Thank you for reacting to this beautiful classic song.

@@sarcasticconsultant378 LOL not a fan? I am an older person and found my priorities and things I like in life have changed. I don’t listen to the radio or watch TV due to all the negativity going on in the world. Hell I can’t even stand social media. All the music these days seems to sound the same from group to group. There is no originality anymore. I only have a few reactors I follow on YT so it was nice to hear music from 30-40 years ago when in my 20s-30s. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@Raynstor.m Absolutely agreeing to your argumentation...originality is hard to find...
Maybe it's the "wind of change" - overdose that I was forced to face for decades. (Though i hated this particular song from the beginning.)
If it's about a Scorpions-Ballad: "Still Loving You"- is soooo much better. imo
In terms of searching originality: Perhaps it's time to try out "Lake Of Tears", "Liliac", "The Vintage Caravan", "Lord Of The Lost"...

A bit of background information about the song. It dates from 1990 and primarily refers to the end of the "Cold War" and the fall of the "Berlin Wall" (the Warsaw Pact had dissolved). It expresses the hope that the world would now become more peaceful and better and that our children would grow up in a world where everyone lived together as brothers and sisters.

Wind of Change is probably one of my favourite songs of all time. And if you think it sounds great now, it's nothing to when it first came out.
The world was changing so fast. I remember watching the Berlin Wall come down. The very air seemed fill of promise and possibilities. We could see the way the world could be... Should be. And it seemed so close, we could touch it.
The map of The World was drawn, and redrawn, again and again. Countries broke apart, and reformed. People believe in a brighter future. They raised their voices, and demanded. Every breath was a force for change. It was an exciting time to be alive. A time of hope, possibility, and promise. And the future shone like a bright new dawn.
Sometimes I wonder what happened. Where it all went wrong. When everything, everyone, stopped moving towards that future. When the unity of our voices faded. And fractured. And we look back on the way things could have been..
People still raise their voices, but it's disjointed - a discordant noise; not the beautiful, hopeful sound of a world as one. But maybe, one day, we will find that unifying voice, and truly come together once more. Truly see the change the world needs. And once more see that bright, golden dawn of a better tomorrow. A future with promise realized.💖💖💖

Thank you so much for this comment, it moved me to tears. You spoke from my heart.
As a Brit living in Germany, I witnessed at close hand what it was like when the Hungarians suddenly opened the borders to the West and thousands of East Germans fled via that route to the West. I saw people demonstrating against the East German regime every Monday until the government caved and opened the borders. I was warmed at the sight of people from both sides hugging each other when they passed through the Brandenburg Gate for the first time as people who were suddenly free to travel to the West without restrictions (Germany was not yet reunited). Every year we have a bank holiday on October 3rd. to celebrate reunification day. It was an amazing moment in history and we were there to experience it. There was hope!
However, I also witnessed the very swift rise of problems. West German companies buying up and subsequently closing down East German companies, causing mass unemployment for people who weren’t used to unemployment ever really being an issue. I remember a politician from the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) saying that in a market economy not everyone has the right to have a job. Why not? Isn’t the ability to work and keep your family fed, clothed and have a roof over their heads a fundamental human right? Then they complained about too many people having to rely on welfare paid for with their taxes. People from the East moved to other places in the West, started work there but had no idea how western companies worked, causing problems and leading to consternation with their co-workers. The differences in mentality became very clear. Second-hand cars were completely sold out because people from the East were exchanging their old East German cars for western ones. Car manufacturers started stockpiling new cars, which eventually led to over-production and subsequently short work and job losses. Germany was hit with a recession within a year of the official reunification. It didn’t take long for the West Germans to see the high cost and disadvantages (for them) this was causing them. For 30 years we paid a solidarity tax to rebuild the East. The first murmurs of “build the wall back up, higher than before” were heard within a few months of the official reunification. It was sickening and disheartening to see what had once held the promise of a brighter future suddenly turn so sour. We soon saw a sharp rise of neo-Nazism in the former East German states. I partly blame the difference in mentality, but also the arrogance and entitlement of the West.

It was also sad to see so many countries in Europe fall apart after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the downfall if the USSR. The war in Yugoslavia happened almost immediately afterwards. My ex-brother-in-law was Yugoslavian (Bosnian) and he always said that when Tito dies, Yugoslavia would fall apart - he was so right. Since the fall of the USSR we have also had war in Georgia, the division of Czechoslovakia, violence in Lithuania and Latvia, and now the war in Ukraine. On the positive side, though - and thankfully there is always a positive side - it has also brought Europe together in so many ways.

@@Warriorking.1963 Yes! As someone who was 23 in 89, when the wall fell), an ex-soldier and musician this one line states the entire message ; 'Let your balalaika (your voice) sing what my guitar (my voice) wants to say... live in peace as brothers'. Too bad we didn't listen to that plea, nor learn that lesson. The other great lyric line is from Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights... "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms".

    • @Erizedd
      @Erizedd 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree, it's an amazing line, but that whole verse is amazing: "The wind of change blows straight into the face of time/Like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell for peace of mind/Let your balalaika sing what my guitar wants to say"
And I have a major weakness for any song that references the fact that we're all brothers/sisters/in this together. Another song along this same vein is John Farnham's "You're The Voice", another anti-war song, with lines like: "We're all someone's daughter, we're all someone's son/How long can we look at each other down the barrel of a gun?"

    • @Erizedd
      @Erizedd 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@croakingtoad4472 'Brother in Arms' is one of my favorite Dire Straights songs - definitely their most powerful. There is something about soldiers, and any people, helping others out at the risk of their own life that moves me more than almost anything else. I think it's the purest and greatest quality we humans can have - this kind of selflessness and heroism.

If you listened to Scorpions you have to listen to Westernhagen "Freiheit" next. Because these two belong together in German history.
And then there are Karat with "Über 7 Brücken musst du gehn" and City with "Am Fenster" both famous classics.
The most favorite is probably: Puhdys with songs like "Alt wie ein Baum", "Lebenszeit" and "Es war schön" that you often hear around family parties. (sadly rare with engl. subs)
Not to forget Nena "99 Luftballons" and "Irgendwie irgendwo irgendwann"
Tom Astor is also a really famous german country star with "Geistertruck" or "Flieg junger Adler".
Extra: There is this Song that a lot of people ones in their German life heard of when growing up. Never forget but never listened to it again:
Jonny Hill "Ruf Teddybär 1-4". Jonny Hill was born in Austria but they speak German almost like we do.
PS: My favorite German song is actually from the Czech singer Karel Gott "Für immer jung". There is also a remix version of this song with the famous German Rapper Bushido.

For those of us that lived with the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain for decades, to see that wall come down this song was absolutely true at that moment. 'The future's in the air'. That's what it felt like, that was an amazing moment in human history. And then the fall of the Soviet Union two years later, this moment in time for the entire human race was a once in many lifetimes happening. The world has to thank Mikhail Gorbachev for 'glasnost' and brining about the change of the Soviet Union. This song captures that time perfectly.

I love your reaction. You truly felt this song as it was meant to be felt, and I don't blame you for almost tearing up at the end there - it's just one of those songs you can't help feeling deeply. I do think that despite the shitty way most of us treat each other, most people truly do long for us to all be able to unite together as 'brothers', putting aside our petty differences.

As an old dude (56) I know and remember the Scorpions well. If I had to pick some songs to represent them, I would have to go with (1) Rock You Like A Hurricane, (2) Still Loving You, (3) The Zoo, (4) No One Like You. I'm sure other fans might choose a different order, maybe even different songs, but 99% of the fans know these songs.

Oh I met The Scorpions while I was in Korea in 2008. I have pictures of me with them rambling in a dialect I couldn't understand even being a quarter German. I think they were just intoxicated, but it was cool.

Check out the version they did with the Berlin Philharmonic too. This is about the events from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to the collapse of the Soviet Union - no other song gets close to capturing the Zeitgeist (see what I did there?) of any period like this one. They were heady days - and the band is still playing.

Scorpions did fit right in with those other bands as they were contemporaries. Rock You Like A Hurricane is one of their biggest songs.
More German bands-- Blind Guardian and Avantasia. Blind Guardian's Bards Song/Valhalla live at Wacken is great for crowd interaction and a good place to start. For Avantasia, we know you like Floor. She joined them for a couple songs, Misplaced Among the Angels and Kill the Pain Away.

Can't get over the fact that you grew up listening to Iron Maiden, Guns N'Roses, Metallica, (for sure) AC/DC and a lot more rock and metal bands, but never listened to a single song by Scorpions!!
Or probably you did and can't remember or didn't know it was them?
Also, to stay in the German rock/ metal music section, have a listen to "Blind Guardian - The Bard's Song"

Who are the Scorpions? What a question! One of the greatest bands of all time that sold far more than 100 Million records. Metallica, Bon Jovi Def Leppard were opening acts for them. And there are so many more great songs by them: No one like you, Holiday, Still loving you, The Zoo, Big city nights, Rock you like a hurricane, Send me an angle, just to name a few.

I don't know if Herbert Grönemeyer has already been mentioned here. He is the most commercially successful artist in Germany and a true song poet. There is a video of "Der Weg" on youtube, which has very well translated English subtitles, so you can understand what he is singing. I'm sorry I can't find the link (when I click on videos they have German subtitles that won't help you).
The song "Der Weg" is dedicated to his wife, who lost her battle with cancer in November 1998. He had lost his brother to leukaemia just four days earlier. Between 1998 and 2002, he only gave two concerts at the World Exhibition in Hanover and was not sure whether he would ever be able to write songs again. His comeback album was "Mensch", which is still the best-selling album in Germany today.

Luke, not sure if you're familiar with the band UFO (and their top guitarist Michael Schenker). He started at 17 in Scorpions alongside his brother Rudolph who plays guitar for Scorpions. Michael went on to first join UFO then form MSG (The Michael Schenker Group) alongside appearing in the short-lived supergroup Contraband. Michael may be the most well-known guitarist to come out of Germany.
Another great metal band out of Germany is Accept. Their lead vocalist UDO Dirkschneider may just have the most unique voice in the 80s/90s metal scene. Balls to the Wall and Generation Clash are both great tunes by them.

How is it that a metal-head like you managed to miss The Scorpions?
This song, as great as it is, isn't even their best. But it's definitely their most popular: Even those who don't like metal tend to really like it.
And it's one of those rare songs that iconically captures the mood, and the essence, of a major historical event and period of history: It was generally inspired by the ending of the Cold War and the collapse of the Eastern (Communist) Bloc, and was specifically inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent reunification of East and West Germany. Since I lived through that period (my early thirties,) I always feel some kind of way whenever I hear it.
Scorpions recommendations: "Still Loving You," "China White," "The Zoo," "We'll Burn The Sky," "Always Somewhere" and "Animal Magnetism." That should get you started.

=) Ah nice, I don't know why people are so O.o about stuff people miss just because it was a "HIT" in their youth and following too.
I was born 1990 and am sure you find a dime of Artists the very least that majorly escaped me because I was distracted by local bands, PLEASE.
But it is funny that you must have not come across this Song since it has been a fairly often played and covered one. Even to the point that Chaneyol from EXO covered it in Berlin too, as Music Bank was happening there, in 2018.
They did retire a few years ago so , sadly , but the eerie creepy positivity of music and Film is they stay around and will work their magic futher on.

It will probably never happen, but I would be so interested to see your opinion on Jan Delay. He is a German artist that is a bit more modern (although he has been around for a while now as well). The interesting aspect is that he sings in German but in such a unique way that even most Germans have to listen to some quite a few times to understand what he is actually saying.
He also covered A LOT of genres. My personal favorites songs (that I would recommend) are:
    - Oh Jonny
    - Sie kann nicht tanzen
    - Wacken
    - Klar
Also, this is not totally out of context because:
    1. You said you visited Hamburg once. Jan Delay is from Hamburg and probably one of the most famous Hamburger in Germany
    2. He has a song called Scorpions-Ballade that does indeed sound a bit like some Scorpions-Songs (specifically the Guitars)

The word "Moskva" is the Russian transliteration of the word "Moscow" . There is also a river in Russia with the same name and is why the songs says to follow the Moskva (river) down to Gorky Park. Gorky Park is a literal park in Russia and kind of like our NYC, Central Park and is where the cold war spies of Russia and the US often met. Its about the tearing down of the Berlin Wall and the end of the cold war.
But what most people do not realize is that these ongoing wars in the earth are a direct result of the war between God and Satan and mankind is stuck somewhere in the middle and is why Christ came. That's not preaching, its just the truth. There truly is coming a "Wind of Change - on a glory night", but it won't come until he does again. Love you all.

This is the song that represented the huge change in the geopolitical world. Communism is dying, and the wall is coming down. My generation never thought we would see this but it swept Europe like a tidal wave in the early 90's. Such a hopeful song. What the hell has happened to the world??
