  • This video will show you how to make an ecosphere or jarrarium, and which kinds of creatures you might find inside. The purpose of this video is education. By learning about what lives in our local creeks and streams, we gain a better understanding of why these habitats deserve preservation. Enjoy!

Thank you Maria! I had a blast making this video, I was honestly shocked by how many different animals were living in that tiny pool of water. Truly amazing. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😄

Hey I don't know if you still reply, but does every lake/pond/creek have the stuff I need to make a ecosphere?

Hi, great question, most lakes, ponds, and creeks, will have everything you need (if they are not polluted), but the diversity of animal life will vary depending on where you are and the time of year. Hope that helps.

Hello I made one but I only have 2 plants one isn’t going to root (because its not on the soil) and one is a land plant what do I do?
Also the only organisms I found were worms and this one white dot that were swimming

Unless it's a water plant, it likely won't survive long. I would consider just keeping the jar with leaves and other debris. Worms are definitely one of the more common finds.

I’d try to get the least amount of sticks and plant matter as possible. They can decompose and kill the whole evosphere

That's a good tip, I've had to remove some leaves to prevent rapid decomposition.

I love this idea! I am wondering why you are closing the lid because it prevents the ecosphere to gain oxygen, is that on purpose? It would make sense to me to have the lid open to allow the creatures to survive for longer

      Hi Klitteband,
That’s a great point about lidless ecospheres letting in more oxygen. At the moment, I don’t have a detailed answer about whether that extra oxygen helps the organisms thrive/survive longer. But, in theory, it seems like an ecosphere without a lid is safer for the tiny animals living inside (ecospheres can crash if the algae and plants die). It would be interesting to setup a few more ecospheres, both with lids and without lids, and see which ecospheres do best after a couple months. Thanks for this interesting question!
