    Well if you think of algae as "plants" you can basically grow them for free. But of course you want to grow nice algae. There is a lot of goldfish keepers that grow green algea carpet in the bare bottom tanks and it looks amazing. I will be releasing video very soon (next week) of my attempt of Algae-scape, River tank full of algae. Realy looking forward finding out how the whole tank will look like after few months of long light duration. Cheers MJ.

    Try to reproduce the ammonia spike by overfeeding. This is a common problem in beginner tanks as well. And I think that's the reason for the BBA.
    You can also try to reproduce what will happen due to an excess of oxygen in the area, insufficient or excessive flow in the aquarium.
    It's a really fun and, in my opinion, unique project to try to grow a particular type of algae by trying different methods and then get rid of it.

    • @bimbim1885
      @bimbim1885 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is pretty much right, BBA pops out on my tank when I first handle my first tank, which I still pretty inexperienced, resulting into me overstocking fish and overfeed them, with less plants. Those are pretty much what beginners did and they always made BBA everytime. MJ could replicate this

    • @williammcdowell6257
      @williammcdowell6257 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My tanks have no measurable ammonia, but inadequate/variable CO2 and excess Phosphate or Nitrate and light have seen BBA. Eutrophication results definitely in blue green and excess light results in green algae in various forms. Years of research links excess Nitrate and especially Phosphate combined with warmer water and higher light levels to terrible green/blue green algae blooms. BBA is one of the most complicated issues, George Farmer has an excellent recent video on this very topic.

    • @nyhotetotniknezaniat
      @nyhotetotniknezaniat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williammcdowell6257 Measured levels of ammonia are dangerous for the inhabitants of the aquarium, and algae is no longer such a problem)) I mean short-term spikes. Filters handle this without any problems. Phosphates certainly also affect the appearance of BBA. In fact, phosphates are also a product of the breakdown of waste, including uneaten food. And many avoid the use of fertilizers with phosphates due to the possibility of BBA appearence. It's also a great topic to experiment with)

    • @williammcdowell6257

      @@nyhotetotniknezaniat Yep. BBA is often a real challenge in pretty good tanks. And yes ref. ammonia, even with a dead adult angel fish (it was at least 5 years old when it passed away) in a two foot tank (it was being bullied in my large tank), good substrate, healthy plants and a mature internal filter and there was no smell and no measurable (admitted with an amateur reagent kit) ammonia. BBA is the least well explained in my experience, I have had it on my CO2 diffuser and filter outlet in a tank where I have had lush growth of Rotala macrandra and carpeting plants. Which I found very frustrating. I do not know how to deliberately culture BBA, and in my experience it takes time to appear. Thanks for the reply.

    Dear MJ, if you want to create black brush algae, I think you should fluctuate your Co2 levels. Unstable levels of Co2 eventually result in absolutely black brush algae.

    Loved this idea. I think the new tank idea will work.
    I have a 4ft tank (55gallon) set up in April with heavy plants and a lot of community fish. I've battled hair algae (but no other kind) from the start, but only on the floating plants and on the mosses. Lights on a schedule, no more than 60% intensity and minimal blue light, no measurable nitrates, hard water.
    We do have a LOT of iron in our well water though - excess iron would be one way to get this type fir the experiment. I was advised by Cory at Aquarium Co-op to keep water changes low so that plants will use more of that iron - something else to perhaps try?
    My other great algae grower is a walstad jar infested with staghorn algae that was in a sunny window for far too long after setting it up. Consider trying this with a jar setup that is a lot harder to get into and clean maybe?

    In my experience you should only overdose the micro nutrients (chelated iron) without extra NPK and without CO2... This should result in your requested staghorn and black brush algae. Hey! Thanks for the nice video. I have started my aquarium 6 weeks ago and now my aquarium is struggling with hair algae.
    I have a high tech aquarium, 60 liter. Lights on for 8 hours, CO2 for 6 hours and a filter hang on filter. I add 1 ml of liquid fertilizer (Micro and Macro) per day.
    This is my progress so far:
    Week 1-3 dark start with aqua soil and spider wood + only filter
    week 4 100% water change & adding in-vitro plants and Co2 (Fully planted)
    week 5 30% water change (adding Co2 and liquid fertilizers)
    week 6 30% water change + adding fish and shrimp.
    My Ph is stable at 6.8 throughout the weeks (testing 2 times per week). KH is going up and down from 5-6. No ammonia or nitrate spikes.
    Problem starts:
    Just in the beginning of week 6 I am getting hair algae outbreak in my aquarium. Now I am trying to get rid of it.
    Research:
    I have done some research and they are all pointing to these two things: Increase CO2 (and adding 1 ml Carbo with the fertilizer).
    Adding more fertilizer (not overloading) should do the trick. Because of plant growing faster and will absorb more then the algae can take.
    That's what I have read in multiple book/sites.
    Testing:
    So what I did now is increasing the CO2 and add (easy)Carbo with fertilizers to see of this helps.
    If there are people with more or better suggestions, please do (I have a ton spend on plants) so I take it very seriously.

      @@NetherViking I see! It’s better to have the CO2 on earlier then the lights 😊 so start the CO2 1 hour before the lights go on. This way as soon as the light goes on the plants already have enough Co2 available to start photosynthesising!

      @@NetherViking Just to expand upon MJ Aquascaping's explanation - The plants need co2 when they are photosynthesising but they don't need co2 when they are not. The normal way of achieving this is to have the co2 come on an hour before the lights so that as soon as the light come on the plants have plenty of co2 already in the water. The co2 should then go off an hour before the lights go off so during the last hour of 'daylight' the plants can use up the co2 already on the water but it does not get replenished. Overnight the level of co2 in the water is low until the following morning when it again comes on an hour before 'sunrise'.

    I once messed up with my plants, pulling up three well rooted big criptocoryne. the tank become green water after a week. then I put lots of floating plants. after a month the floating plants are taking over so the water is clear again.
    could be nightmare if it's a gsa. they grow on plants too, sucks if it grows on anubias or buce lol. as for bba, i've never had that problem.
    only green hair and bga. still it's very easy to maintain, put lots of pothos or floating plant and it will clear in no time. also water change and siphoning for bga😀
    algae is my friend🤣 they produce oxygen for the ecosystem too hahaha

    Do all of what you did and increase the temperature to 29 degrees celsius. I live in the tropics and it's a challenge to bring down the water temperature. Things go wrong much faster when there's high light, high nutrients and high temp.

  • @fisherchi
    @fisherchi ปีที่แล้ว

    Overfeed with fish food, increase temp of tank, put some BBA from another tank into this tank to start the spores population, keep lights on for long time at highest intensity, maximize filter flow, remove cleaner fish and invertebrates, and stop CO2. That should do it. :)

    You probably need the water to get a lot more dirty. Usually black algae I've seen appear in aquariums with heavy feeder big fish that produce a lot of waste. The green spot algae is probably keeping the water clean rn, so maybe try to leave some food in there to produce amonia and maybe other types of algae will appear

    In my experience its usually something like this:
    Greenspot/dust = too might light.
    Stringy/hairy stuff = too much nutrients.
    Black stuff = inconsistant co2/flow problems.
    I think the reason why you didt get any string/hair algae was due to the healthy plant mass in the tank, but if u kept dosing like that for another 2-3 weeks I think it would have started to show up even with that plant mass

    I think your carpeting plant was soaking up most of the excess nutrients and preventing the substrate nutrients from leaking into the water column. Not sure, just guessing. From the video, it seems your plant carpet was not trimmed as much as the other plants. Makes me think of iwagumi style tanks that are able to maintain balance with just a carpeting plant and no others.

    My tank is struggling big time. Tank is 9 months old and ever since I've added co2 (2 months ago) my plants are covered in brown algae (diatoms I am guessing) and deteriorating. No signs of any green or black algae. I don't think it's my water because I have a non planted 75 with crystal clear water and zero diatoms. Makes me want to tear down and start over, maybe without co2.

    Hi, I set up my planted aquarium(50 liters) on 25th of March. Everything was perfect until the first trimming session. After I trimmed the plants algae appeared and now I can't get rid of them. I did the blackout for 5 days and algae in the carpet didn't die and just continue to spread. I have pressurized Co2, Chihiros A 2 series on 75% and 8 hours of light(2 hours combined sunrise and sunset). Adding Neo solution 1 and 2, 1 mil for 2 days. There is 10liters of neo soil in the aquarium. Aquarium is heavily planted. There is thread algae, staghorn algae and some green spot algae. Plants now look stunted and weak. Dou you have some advice how to fix the problem?

    One point I never see being address in any algae video is: How do the algae cells of all possible species enter your tank in the first place? Algae is a living being and cannot be created out of thin air. Typically those cells are carried into the tank with the plants, hardscape, WCs, etc... but being this tank mature it is theoretically possible there were simply no residual cells of those other algaes there to reproduce. And if you use RO water, then new cells are not being reintroduced via the WCs. This is just a hypothesis of course.

      Using an already established filter. Using anything else than in vitro plants. Buying shrimp/fish/snailes. There is literally no way to avoid algae entering your system, unless you: Have an empty tank, in vitro plants, no stock, no hardscape. :)
