I found that 24 hour illumination is required to get the tanks to develop green algae initially. This normally takes a few days using full spectrum light. Then scrap the glass using a glass scrapper or sponge but leave the debris in the tank. Green water usually ensues the following day.
I am hoping my strong southern sun for less will do, I just put a bare tank on the patio and will fill it with water from my pond (which has a fine enough carpet already), I purchased a better LED for when I bring it in, but for now I am counting on direct sun for about 8.

Great instructive video! I love algae! I have green carpet algae in all my tanks too. My grandfather told me long ago that green algae is a friend to all fish. I still remember hid advice and always strive to get green sides to my tanks. But you explained the actual process for anyone to get green algae so thank you! Great video!
I love your video. I did this algae by accident... I had brown algae, and my UV filters was unplugged by accident for a week... and started creating greennalgae... meanwhile because is wintee, I increased my light and turned on the UV again... 😂😂😂😂 Now I have a green carpet that looks nice. I like how you explained it. And the chemical information is very usefull. Thank you
When growing a carpet, can it only be on the smooth glass bottom, or can a carpet also be achieved on substrate? Also should tank decorations be added before or after the green carpet? Thanks
All decorations should be added after green carpet algae fully developed. No live planet either before or after. Green carpet algae can stick on stones or bottom of your tank, but no sands or other substitutes
Will watch this on my lunch hour tonight! I work overnights now at Walmart as a manager. The salon closed again this week due to corona virus. Yikes. Xoxo
Congrats, Jessica, for the new beginning. Glad to hear your move on! I bet your warm hart, resilience spirit, and most importantly super nice people skill. Nothing can not be overcome! 💪 👍
Great video, the information was easy to follow and helped clear the ambiguity surrounding how to get algae to grow. I started a dirted tank with a sand cap a year ago. It initially looked crystal clear, then as leaf litter began to break down brown algae also began to develop. I thought it was detritus from the leafs breaking down and often thought I was going to overload our tank with organic waste. I run two air stones for aesthetics to have air bubbles coming out of the clay pots I used as hardscape. At some point the water took on a green tint but never got thick or cloudy. I always thought it was the Madagascar Lace plant that was too tall for tank and created a canopy of leafs, but the brown algae never really went. It makes me wonder if I had started to get green water... With the tank I am trying to establish a food web in the tank, bacteria, algae, plants, Daphnia, rotifers, shrimp, fish, snails, etc. so my desire for the algae than just appearances, and with the clay pots the brown algae works just as well... Lately the plants have not been doing as well, the only thing I can think of is the water with the tannins and other things is dimming the lights. I have always thought hair algae was different than the carpeting algae... Though what I have known as hair algae will grow attached to things but tends to float suspended in the water like a person with long hair...
Thank you so much! What a great video on growing green carpet algae! Just ordered the same light and I'm ready for my beautiful goldfish to have a nutritious algae carpet!!! The chart is great to too keep- track of your progress!

would growing green carpet algae using this method during the cycle stage of a fresh tank work? or do i need to wait a few weeks until the cycle stage is complete and fish can be introduced before this can be achieved? thank you so much
This was very helpful! I have beautiful green hair algae in one of my tanks, and I tried to transplant it in another tank. The algae turned brown and the whole tank looks filthy, despite the full spectrum lights I have on it. I'll add some air stones tomorrow! Thanks again!
Hey Lei. I acheived a deep green water overnight after removing brown algae, water change, removing sediment and adding light. I waited two days before doing a 90% water change and reducing fish. It has since been 6 days and i have seen no evidence of any algae growth on the glass surfaces of my tank. The tank is mostly clear, but a small green tint can be seen. Should i restart and try brown algae, or should i wait longer? Thanks 😊
You did everything right except for reducing fish. First adding more fish to keep fish waste in the tank to promote algae growth. If does not work, then redo it from beginning. I don’t see you mention green water. You need to have some green water and then convert it to carpet algae.
Thank you so much for this informational video. I already reached the green water stage been thick green for 2 days now. Do i need to add the uv light or do the 90% water change? Plzz help and thank u

goldfish corner, i don't know if you'll see this comment given that it's a 3 year old video. but i just wanted to say thank you so much for this video, as after two iterations i finally achieved a beautiful green carpet algae that's more than halfway growing through my tank!
You’re the only recent comment I’ve seen, can I ask I wanted to start this process but have a really good canister filter, do you think it’d work with one?
@@jarettspores8535 yes you totally can! i run a canister filter and overhead sump filter combined, but honestly just make sure to combine that with a really good full spectrum light and you're good. my light's a ledstar c120 so i believe i was able to achieve the green carpet algae faster than i should have, and my setup is right next to a big window of mine so direct sunlight also supplemented the growth
I'm surprised your goldfish didn't try to chew the algae as snack. Mine do and thus my green carpet is a bit patchy :D Thanks for the theory though. I have been keeping the green algae carpet for 1 month now but just blindly followed instructions without actually understanding the theory behind it. Keep it up!
Hi Professor Lei , it's a real sight to attend and learn your lessons. This interesting information on seaweed tupes is excellent. Congratulations on the milestone reached on your channel! Fantastic time lapse of your aquarium with the formation of algae.
That is fine. Remove or scrub off brown algae off your tank and rocks. Your rock should a good media for growth green carpet algae due to their porous structure
Hello thank you for this video🤎May I ask how will I know if my light is a full spectrum light? I bought one that says full spectrum and it has white and blue lights 21 watts.
Normally it should have white and blue LEDs. More reliable way is to check the light spectrum chart, which should be provided by the manufacture. If you don't see the wide range of spectrum chart, don't waste your money
If people like goldfish they should really watch this video. It is so informative and normally goldfish experts wont tell you the secrets. They will just tell you to have a tank get some water , have some good bacteria and do some water change then everything will be alright (I hope it will be that simple in reality but it wont). This video makes me feel that I travel to the past and having a lecture in the university.
Thank you your video really helped me. I have achieved green water in my tank. How long should we leave the green water in the tank before adding the uv filter
Fantastic! Remember anything has a life cycle, the same green carpet algae. Brown algae may grow on top of your green carpet algae. Check your algae everyday, you may simply scrub off brown algae with your hand. Remove any green carpet if it turns to darker color
Hi Professor Lei thank you for the very informative video I wanted to share my experience in making this type of tank, initially i have a very very hard time getting things going, went as far as doing 24 hours lighting for a week and not even brown water show up but then i put a bit of algae covered rocks from my other tank and grass algae started spotting immediately after a few days skipping the brown water and green water phase Maybe because it's a really new tank and it's indoor that it's very hard to get algae seeds naturally from the atmosphere but yeah i would recommend getting algae from other places first if you have a hard time
I love your theory. Thanks for sharing the info and very easy to follow just need time and patience :) ill try on the next couple of days and share result.
I have a question about my tank.. When looking on top of the aquarium the carpet algae is dark green but on the side its light green. Do i need to start over again?
Hi Paul, do you mean that the carpet algae on the bottom is different than the one on side of your tank? If so, keep the light green algae and just completely remove the algae on the bottom. Basically, regrow the algae on the bottom of your tank
Thanks for the in depth video on how to make a beautiful green carpet! I think I may try this on a mini patio pond! I have two that have very bright green water but it would be great to transition them to carpets
Michael thank you for the feedback. Since your pond already has green water, the light is sufficient. I guess working on filtration and using UV to kill green water. That should work out. Please keep us posted.
Thanks, best video ever! But there is no airation in the time laps at the end of the video. As your flow chart says that need to be? Or did you turn it off during all the filming..🤔
Hi my filter cannister has seachem purigen should i take it out? How does a UV sterilizer help with algae carpet growth, I read it kills the green water? I read some people were trying to grow green carpet algae but ended up with cyanobacteria? How can I prevent that from happening?
i have tank with silica sand fully covered at the buttom and my goal to create green carpet wall. you said we need to remove silica to make green water and green carpet. am i need to remove all silica sand? for now my background is full of brown algae with small amount of hair green algae. i can't afford to buy full spectrum light. can i still able to create green carpet only with double regular LED lights?
Hi *Raehan* , Yes, you have to *remove all your sand* from the bottom of your tank if you decide to go with the green carpet algae style. The good news is that your water is cycled and good to go since you already see some brown algae and green hairs. If you don't have full-spectrum lights, one solution is simply to move your tank location to get *more natural sunlight* , which is even better than a full-spectrum light. Remember the light the magic to turn grown algae into green carpet algae. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
@@GoldfishCorner thank you for the advice. unfortunately my family loves the tank with sand and i can't figure out what kind of sand that not contain silica :D. so i will start to set up new tank outdoor and try out your method. and 1 more question , do i need to keep doing water change regularly or only do water change based on your methode? (the one after get brown algae and one after get green water.) sorry for my terrible english hope you can understand what i trying to say hehe..
@@raehananshori95 Your English is fine :-) I have no problem understand your English. Yeah, set up a new tank outdoor is a great way to good. Since your new tank is outside, just do your regular water change. Good luck!
Nice informative video, shared it a bunch tonight. I have some goldfish and some tilapia, both will soon be used in aquaponics systems. The goldfish tank I want to look nice tho :)
Really appreciated your sharing my video. Interestingly, algae management is a very practical subject of goldfish but never got discussed in any goldfish books. Let me if any of my tips work or not work. Thanks, again!
Once green carpet algae is established what % of water will need to be changed weekly? in the final step of the procedure you say a weekly water change but i am not sure how much water i will have to drain?
It may take longer time. Betta fish produces much less waste, ie fertilizer. Put the rank on the south side of your house near a window to get sufficient sunlight, reduce water change frequency to boost waste. But be Careful with your water quality at the same time.
Hi, Lei. Is it possible to achieve the green carpet algae in a 75cm tall aquarium? My aquarium dimensions is 180cm long x 90cm wide x 75cm tall. If 75cm is too tall, what's the maximum height? Thank you, Lei!
just use your hands or a credit card to scrub them off. You tank always has different type of algae competing each other. You need to control them and promote the type of algae you want
Excellent and useful advice thank you very much for sharing the video; even if we do not own an aquarium we really like to follow those who have this wonderful passion greeting Rossella and Umberto Italy😀
Hi sir, is the green carpet algae the same as normal hair algae? I have lights on 12hr, high led full spectrum but can’t get green water. My water is white cloudy, I can’t seem to get green water. If I have too much flow, will it prevent green algae from growing?
You almost figure out the answer. When your water is nearly fully cycled, it will becomes a little obscure. That is good news. If you have fish, and sufficient sun, you should get green water. If not, reduce your water change frequency. The water current will suppress the algae grow, so you need to reduce or eliminate water flow
After you got green carpet stable on the bottom, you can do regular maintenance. If you accidentally damage a part of carpet, it should grow back within a week
Short answer is Yes! And Yes, you need fish in the tank to facilitate the algae growth. One tip is to use low porous rock (not many holes in the rock). River rockets could be a good choice!
@@GoldfishCorner thank you. I don't use this for fish but for tadpoles. Atelopus spec. They live in extremelly clean streams and eat algea. So instead of fish can I also use spirulina powder to supply nitrate at the start?
Hi lei..can I make green water or green carpet algae in a bucket and put in under the sun? I noticed in my outdoor hydroponic I easily gets algae from being under constant sun not sure I can do this with bucket of water and then put it in my aquarium. Thanks
@@GoldfishCorner thanks for the reply. I put my aquarium outside last week and I can now see the green algae patch on the side and back of the tank. Used to only have brown algae until I really watched and understand this video. I guess the sun really what helps it grow. Can't wait for the patch to become green carpet!

Extremely informative! Great content.
Alex, thank you for your consideration. Let me know if you got green carpet algae in your tank
Hi, Lei. Wow, this is a healthy green carpet!! Great video. Thanks you
Thank you buddy for watching from 🇦🇷
looks fantastic!!!! Thanks Sir!!!!
WOW, Thank you for this SUPERB and very detailed video.
Thank you, buddy!
i have tank with silica sand fully covered at the buttom and my goal to create green carpet wall. you said we need to remove silica to make green water and green carpet. am i need to remove all silica sand? for now my background is full of brown algae with small amount of hair green algae. i can't afford to buy full spectrum light. can i still able to create green carpet only with double regular LED lights?
Good luck!
thank you for reply & answer my question, you are very kind person.
I've been trying this for 4 months now. I only have brown algae. Haha. Now i know what i have to do. Thank you. This vid is very helpful.
Thank you, Jed. Let’s know your result and Feel free to share this video
10-20% daily, 50% weekly

Would these instructions work for a 10 gallon betta fish tank? Any smaller equipment you would recommend?
It may take longer time. Betta fish produces much less waste, ie fertilizer. Put the rank on the south side of your house near a window to get sufficient sunlight, reduce water change frequency to boost waste. But be Careful with your water quality at the same time.
Hi, Lei. Is it possible to achieve the green carpet algae in a 75cm tall aquarium? My aquarium dimensions is 180cm long x 90cm wide x 75cm tall. If 75cm is too tall, what's the maximum height? Thank you, Lei!
can sunlight come through from the side? If yeas, it is feasible. If only sunlight came from the top, it would be a little hard.
Lovely presentation. Helped a lot. I'm doing this for shrimp will this cycle happen faster in a nano tank
Cool. How it goes? Did you make it?
Thanks for the very useful sharing. Wondering if you could share some tips how to combat blue green algea 🙏
Mike, you are welcome! I plan to do a Q&A video to talk about these common questions. Thank you!
@@GoldfishCorner Looking forward to your video!
Hi how do you remove some brown patches? My hair grass is now about 2-4mm high. Do i scrape it off or just let it be?
just use your hands or a credit card to scrub them off. You tank always has different type of algae competing each other. You need to control them and promote the type of algae you want
Hi. Do i need to remove first the brown algae? Coz i just upgraded my lights into full spectrum
Sir, i would like to know if d you syphon da poops everyday? Thank you
Yes, I do it every day. Please note that you should use aged tap water after 2-days. I don't use fresh tap water with a dose of water conditioner.
Can I just skip brown algae and just use ready made/starter chlorella(green water)?
How many krkz full spectrum light that I need for my long 75 gallon tank?
If money is not a problem, just put two LED lights
Excellent and useful advice thank you very much for sharing the video; even if we do not own an aquarium we really like to follow those who have this wonderful passion greeting Rossella and Umberto Italy😀
Thank you for your kind comments

Hi sir, is the green carpet algae the same as normal hair algae?
I have lights on 12hr, high led full spectrum but can’t get green water. My water is white cloudy, I can’t seem to get green water. If I have too much flow, will it prevent green algae from growing?
You almost figure out the answer. When your water is nearly fully cycled, it will becomes a little obscure. That is good news. If you have fish, and sufficient sun, you should get green water. If not, reduce your water change frequency. The water current will suppress the algae grow, so you need to reduce or eliminate water flow
Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. I am a subscriber now and hope to see more vids like this take care🙏
Thank you, my friend. Welcome to the club 👍
Is the 90% water change a must? I can't do a 90% with the shrimp I have... the shock will kill them.
The number is not set. You just change 2/3 of water
How do you maintain it clean from all the fish waste? If I vacuum the waste, I will mess up the carpet.
After you got green carpet stable on the bottom, you can do regular maintenance. If you accidentally damage a part of carpet, it should grow back within a week
this was a lesson learnt. Thanks
Thank you dear friend from 🇯🇲 👍
Can this also be done on rocks? And do you need fish for this to happen or can you create it in a tank without fish.
Aha, are you trying to grow green carpet algae or moss? The carpet algae has to be underwater.
@@GoldfishCorner algea. Yes I know
Give a try and keep aeration
how to remove silicate, please tell me lei...🙏🏼
Cheers another super good video :D "D
Thank you my friend 🇸🇬
Hi lei..can I make green water or green carpet algae in a bucket and put in under the sun?
I noticed in my outdoor hydroponic I easily gets algae from being under constant sun not sure I can do this with bucket of water and then put it in my aquarium.
Thanks
Hi Sai, that should be fine but make sure you put some cheep goldfish in the bucket, too. Otherwise, you will not get the green carpet algae..
