Away Travel customer service is the very best. I had two of my Away bags--a carry on and a regular one---damaged when my house was being treated for bed bugs. The heat caused something to melt so I couldn't open them. I got in touch with Away asking what I could do. I was going to file a claim with the pest removal company but Away shipped me replacements and had me return mine at their cost. I already loved their bags but that made me a fan for life.

I had always purchased my luggage at Ross/TJ Maxx etc. and got some nice Calpak pieces in early 2020. Obviously they didn’t get much immediate use, but went on a few WDW and DCL trips and both mine and my fiancés bags were damaged in just a few years. I finally made the splurge for Away and figured, if I have to buy $80 bags every few years, I might as well get one nice bag that could last forever with the warranty - and I’ve been so happy with my Away bag ever since!
Our luggage is 17 years old. Got it as a 3 piece set at target for 99 dollars. They are still going strong. They are looking worn (but I think they will last a bit longer) so we’ve been looking. I looked at away but my inner miser came out. A friend of mine used to always get hers at Tuesday Morning (RIP). So TJ Max or the like stores sounds like an excellent alternative. The impromptu trip to TJ Max was a pro move. Great job!
Just a suggestion for packers--unzip the lining of the side that has the bars and pack things like scarves, sox, and other thin items that can be folded to fit within each section. This can raise up those empty spots and make them even for laying your other items into the suitcase. On the other side, you can unzip the lining and lay things like paperwork, magazines, etc. to keep them flat and out of the way.
I am a Travel Pro fan. They make flight crew luggage. I also prefer the ones with the shirt packing board. My collard linen shirts arrive at my destination with minimal wrinkles looking crisp.
Couldn’t agree more! I think you do really get what you pay for when it comes to luggage, especially Away. We bought some luggage at Target years ago and they’ve honestly held up great!

Hi Jen! My son has that same Amazon Basics 21" (hasn't used it in a few years though), and I actually dug it out of the closet while I was watching this to confirm - Yep, it feels cheap. But it has gotten him through a few domestic carry-on situations that I'm aware of. That said, I'll be shopping at TJ Maxx for my next suitcase! First off, it was this video that convinced me to join you on Patreon! Second, I’ve been inching closer and closer toward buying some Away items because I travel a lot for work and need to invest in something better. The last piece you talked through is practically identical to the London Fog bag I have (I found at Marshall’s). Those side pockets are everything! In one side, I keep my gum and snacks. The other side holds my charging cord, flying scarf, and kindle or book. I don’t know if I can do without those side pockets on any future flights!

Totally understand about the telescoping handle....if it's not "sturdy," your wrist will have to compensate. And agree, bathing suit shopping is an event in itself.

We have 3 Vera Bradley large rolling bags (that we got at the outlets) and check them all the time. They have some scuffs but they are nearly as noticeable as the ones on our solid gray bag. In fact we are packing them for our Europe cruise later.
We have similar under the seat roller bags made by Delsey we bought years ago and I love them. Did not buy it from Amazon but a site that sells luggage. Only comment I have is that you have to be careful if you have a middle seat; if you have bulky things in both of the outer pockets it may make the bag too wide. I've only found that in the middle seat, as it tends to be narrower underneath for some reason.

I bought a Calpak 22" hardshell suitcase at Marshall's. I took it on a long trip, and after the second flight, the expansion zipper broke. This made the suitcase bigger than I needed. Luckily, I had a locking luggage strap so I was able to at least compress it a little bit. Also, instead of a cover over both sides, it only had the X-straps, which reduce the efficiency of packing. In addition, it was rather fatiguing to push because the handle was flimsy. I would say having a sturdy handle on a suitcase is one of the most important assets.

I’ve cruised many times with my Away carryon for up to three weeks. I can get laundry done on the ship and no longer feel safe checking my bags. I love the Away and it will last. I made a mistake getting the pink but otherwise very happy

What a FUN video, Jen! I absolutely love my Away bag which was a most excellent gift from my two children. (cost me zero dollars!) That under the seat bag looks neat. Also, I was so proud to see my name go by on your patron list!
One other thing I forgot to say… I could be wrong but I believe when I was researching Away bags, their small “underseat” option does not have a trolly sleeve to allow it to ride along in top of your roller carryon. Just a tip to those of you looking at the Away small roller. That’s why I decided to try the AB bags first and now I’ll move on to travel pro.
Oh Jen….love the comparison. Every time you do a video mentioning the away I always want to comment on the Amazon luggage. So I has my original carry-on suitcase, some random brand purchased at Burlington coat factory in April 2008. My grandfather had a serious heart attack and I literally flew from Spain to California within 30 hours of that happening with just the clothes on my back and a change of outfit. That little luggage stood the test of time and traveled on planes, trains and automobiles, metros, cobble-stone streets, etc all around Spain, to/from the and all over the US, to Russia, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and France multiple times over the course of 11 years. In 2019 I decided I wanted new luggage and at that time you had reviewed Away and Penguin luggage and Beis was getting popularity. My problem was that none were available in Spain to touch. Some I could have a leap of faith, purchase online and pay international shipping plus customs and hope that I would love it. As they were, the price was already high and these extra expenses just didn’t make them worth it. I needed (wanted) new luggage for work as I was going to ramp up my travel to “pre maternity”levels…which was once a month (post motherhood travel was reduced to 1-2 times a year). I tried the Amazon luggage (for 38€, originally 59€ and now around 89€, however in 2019, or at least the Spanish version of Amazon basic, had some differences. 1st, due to Spanish law, it had a 2 year warranty. Mine does have TSA lock, but it is on the side, not the top and it has a compression mat (like away) but it straps in vertically, not horizontally. It had a chance to go on 3 trips before then pandemic and has been on quite a few since. Truthfully, no complaints but I can’t compare it to Away as it’s not possible to purchase it online, even with extra costs (thanks to Brexit coming into effect). So here is my use… for flights - I really only use it if I am traveling solo or we have tickets that include carry-on luggage in its price (usually not the case). I live in a smaller sized city with a small airport due to the short run way availability for large planes to take-off. Major airlines send their “low cost” division to handle flights that are usually limited to domestic flights. All Low cost airlines now charge you to pay for any bag larger than a personal bag. I also have 2 young children and they get tired of pushing along their own heavy suitcase or basically just leave it behind. Therefore, it is usually easier to just check-in and pay for 1 large suitcase that my entire family can share rather than pay for 4 carry-on suitcases and me have to carry around everything. For now, I am happy with the Amazon basic but I don’t expect it to work miracles I’ll try and get a few more years out and f it.. My Burlington luggage finally died on our trip in dec 2022 to Prague. My husband was using the luggage and the wheels were pulled off after we were forced to check it in. I would like to give him the Amazon and buy myself the purple shimmer from Vera Bradley. I’m just waiting for a good deal. Also the VB you got from TJMaxx is also the factory/ outlet design. The price you paid was a bit high…they could go down even more during their 30% + 70% discounts that they have occasionally. On the other hand, The new retail carry-ons have a different interior design than the one you showed. Again, the purple shimmer is beautiful inside and looks more eco-friendly, organizer friendly and better layout. Morale of the story…if you really can’t afford more, Amazon basics is good, not great. It gets the job done and if you treat it well, you can get 10+ years out of it.
Finding luggage can be so difficult. I was very fortunate 10 years ago to hit a good sale at Macy's and picked up a great Samsonite hardsided set. Each piece has been a trooper through many domestic and international trips... and hardly show any wear. I feel for the people who aren't able to find a bag that works. I do like the bag you reviewed at the end- that's a keeper! Have a good one, Jen!
Carry on suitcases seem to very greatly 35 to 46?liter. When comparing check on luggage or any luggage, make sure to compare the actual capacity and weight of the luggage.
I was thinking I was the only one that the handle loose bothered me! Wish we could afford away! We found American tourister at Walmart has a really good one. It’s like a rugged line but works very well.
I actually think the first video of yours I ever saw was a packing video with that Away bag on the other channel when I was researching the brand and it was the push I needed to buy it. Absolutely no regrets and I have a full set of Away now plus a lot of the accessories. Yes they’re expensive but people need to realize you get what you pay for. I got tired of cheap bags I kept having to replace. The organization and build quality is fantastic. Customer service is too. Sometimes it just pays to spend more.

Go to TJ Max! I have had the same roll-aboard for 6 years flying 5-6 times a year. (cost less than $50) If you have money to spend on the high end ones that is fine but it is not necessary. I love your packing videos and learning ways to pack so I don't have to check a bag.
Im a new subscriber and like many others before me have said, i really enjoy your positive attitude and down-to-earth personality. Loved the content today; so helpful. The random trip to TJMaxx was inspiring. FYI i know Ben Sherman as a funky, upscale clothing line for men. Bought my nephews some of his shirts as special gifts in the past. I also once owned a red Delsey bag i got on clearance at Harrods in the 90s. I had no idea at the time what a great deal i got. It lasted for over a decade. Loved it! However, the second time i bought a Delsey online it fell apart within a year or two of purchase. Perhaps a fake? I've not tried an Away bag yet cause the inexpensive luggage i bought about 7 years ago is holding up surprisingly well through multiple cruises, international, and monthly domestic flights. Sadly, though, i can no longer find it for sale. So, ill probably be in the market for new luggage in the not-too-distant future and will check out Away. I purchased the AB navy underseat and AB navy carryon to make a matching set. I sent them both back because of the handles and lack same reasons you didn’t like the hard side. No interior organization options and poor pockets. The underseat was nicer but I still was wary of the handles. I don’t know why I’m hung up on having a set. 🤣 now I’m waiting for travel pro to have a sale and I think I’ll get their underseat and carryon. We travel quite a bit and I just felt like the AB would not last. Thanks for the great review Jen! Oh and also, London fog at TJ maxx usually has a underseat roller and a better carryon option. I felt like LF was sturdier.
Delsey is a really great brand. I got a soft side carryon at Costco a few years ago. That’s my favorite carryon. I did just buy a hard side Delsey which is not a carryon size from Marshall’s ($52 bucks!) I wanted a bag that’s in between carryon size and super giant!
We have 2 Delsey Paris under seat rollers that are very similar to the Amazon under seat roller. They can be handy and serve a purpose. I’m actually considering using one of ours as a carryon for our cruise along with my personal item (the Away vs Monos bags I’m evaluating ).
I’ve had mixed luck at Marshall’s. We bought one Samsonite and has lasted years then a set of 3 that cracked the hard shell the first use. I’ll probably get an Away next. But right now I’m loving my Vera Bradley rolling backpack I got used on Poshmark. Also, thrift stores often have great real cheap luggage!
After purchasing a few TJ Maxx bags over the years I invested in an Away bigger carryon this year knowing I would be traveling quite a bit. I feel like Calpak is fairly comparable but even that let us down last year and we had a broken zipper on one’s first trip out. I love my away so much I actually just purchased the new Neon Pink bigger carryon for my teenage daughter. My husband was a bit shocked at the price but it really is a good investment long term with their warranty.
Thanks for the great video Jen! I did NOT buy the Amazon Basics carry-on and went to TJ Maxx LOL and ended up with a Samsonite and Calpak Carryons. I have had an excellent experience with Samsonite from years of using them since I was a child, and the Calpak has good reviews. This is our first time purchasing Hardback carryons, so fingers crossed they work well for our upcoming trip to South Africa. I would love an Away, but it's so pricey, and my hubby is a frequent flier who swears by Travelpro. if you have any suggestions for packing for 8 days to South Africa which includes safari and city trips keep me posted:)

10:37 You can buy generic wheel kits online to replce just about any of these. You have to go at it from the inside though, and if your liner doesn't have a zip, you'd have to tear it. Also, the wheel colour may not match :P
How does one clean that quilted bag?? I love that hard case luggage is so easy to clean. Anything going onto the floor is going where street shoes have gone and will have so much nasty gunk - bacteria, germs (dog pee & poo, also from people, cigarette ashes, everything cars leak, etc. will all be tracked in by shoes) being rubbed onto that luggage. Handling that after it has gone on the floor is like bare feet in the airport - ICK!!

I recently went on a 12 day trip. I left my Away at home, choosing to use an expandable carry-on that my wife recently received from her company. BIG mistake. It was great on solid flooring. Unfortunately, it was terrible on carpeting, especially with a backpack on top!
I bought the Away Large & Bigger Carry-On back in early 2021 from your previous reviews. Definitely happy with that choice. I'm still not entirely used to clamshell luggage vs the duffel I replaced. My size 16 dress shoes are a little more smooshed than I'd like being forced into 1/2 of the total available depth. Definitely considering acquiring another of the checked size. I fly Southwest typically so... But if I do, do I continue to match the navy or get one of the new bright lime green 🤔

100% agree you can find quality luggage @ TJX. Two questions, is the fig leaf plant in your office real? I am considering buying one and unsure bc they can get quite large. I appreciate the AB underseat review. I have been looking for something similar. Is it big enough to consider as an overnight bag versus a duffle? Duffles are hard for me to carry throughout the airport bc I am petite and the weight is too much.
My husband bought the Amazon one for himself and it irritates me so much and I’m not even using it. I find myself heavy sighing when I look at it and need to let it go 😆

Totally understand about the telescoping handle....if it's not "sturdy," your wrist will have to compensate. And agree, bathing suit shopping is an event in itself.

If one has a suitcase without locks, there now is a luggage strap with a code lock. It is very secure.

We have 3 Vera Bradley large rolling bags (that we got at the outlets) and check them all the time. They have some scuffs but they are nearly as noticeable as the ones on our solid gray bag. In fact we are packing them for our Europe cruise later.
We have similar under the seat roller bags made by Delsey we bought years ago and I love them. Did not buy it from Amazon but a site that sells luggage. Only comment I have is that you have to be careful if you have a middle seat; if you have bulky things in both of the outer pockets it may make the bag too wide. I've only found that in the middle seat, as it tends to be narrower underneath for some reason.

I bought a Calpak 22" hardshell suitcase at Marshall's. I took it on a long trip, and after the second flight, the expansion zipper broke. This made the suitcase bigger than I needed. Luckily, I had a locking luggage strap so I was able to at least compress it a little bit. Also, instead of a cover over both sides, it only had the X-straps, which reduce the efficiency of packing. In addition, it was rather fatiguing to push because the handle was flimsy. I would say having a sturdy handle on a suitcase is one of the most important assets.
Away luggage is fantastic and worth every penny. No problems, great customer service and will last forever.

I’ve cruised many times with my Away carryon for up to three weeks. I can get laundry done on the ship and no longer feel safe checking my bags. I love the Away and it will last. I made a mistake getting the pink but otherwise very happy

One other thing I forgot to say… I could be wrong but I believe when I was researching Away bags, their small “underseat” option does not have a trolly sleeve to allow it to ride along in top of your roller carryon. Just a tip to those of you looking at the Away small roller. That’s why I decided to try the AB bags first and now I’ll move on to travel pro.
Oh Jen….love the comparison. Every time you do a video mentioning the away I always want to comment on the Amazon luggage. So I has my original carry-on suitcase, some random brand purchased at Burlington coat factory in April 2008. My grandfather had a serious heart attack and I literally flew from Spain to California within 30 hours of that happening with just the clothes on my back and a change of outfit. That little luggage stood the test of time and traveled on planes, trains and automobiles, metros, cobble-stone streets, etc all around Spain, to/from the and all over the US, to Russia, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and France multiple times over the course of 11 years. In 2019 I decided I wanted new luggage and at that time you had reviewed Away and Penguin luggage and Beis was getting popularity. My problem was that none were available in Spain to touch. Some I could have a leap of faith, purchase online and pay international shipping plus customs and hope that I would love it. As they were, the price was already high and these extra expenses just didn’t make them worth it. I needed (wanted) new luggage for work as I was going to ramp up my travel to “pre maternity”levels…which was once a month (post motherhood travel was reduced to 1-2 times a year). I tried the Amazon luggage (for 38€, originally 59€ and now around 89€, however in 2019, or at least the Spanish version of Amazon basic, had some differences. 1st, due to Spanish law, it had a 2 year warranty. Mine does have TSA lock, but it is on the side, not the top and it has a compression mat (like away) but it straps in vertically, not horizontally. It had a chance to go on 3 trips before then pandemic and has been on quite a few since. Truthfully, no complaints but I can’t compare it to Away as it’s not possible to purchase it online, even with extra costs (thanks to Brexit coming into effect). So here is my use… for flights - I really only use it if I am traveling solo or we have tickets that include carry-on luggage in its price (usually not the case). I live in a smaller sized city with a small airport due to the short run way availability for large planes to take-off. Major airlines send their “low cost” division to handle flights that are usually limited to domestic flights. All Low cost airlines now charge you to pay for any bag larger than a personal bag.
I also have 2 young children and they get tired of pushing along their own heavy suitcase or basically just leave it behind. Therefore, it is usually easier to just check-in and pay for 1 large suitcase that my entire family can share rather than pay for 4 carry-on suitcases and me have to carry around everything.
For now, I am happy with the Amazon basic but I don’t expect it to work miracles I’ll try and get a few more years out and f it.. My Burlington luggage finally died on our trip in dec 2022 to Prague. My husband was using the luggage and the wheels were pulled off after we were forced to check it in. I would like to give him the Amazon and buy myself the purple shimmer from Vera Bradley. I’m just waiting for a good deal.
Also the VB you got from TJMaxx is also the factory/ outlet design. The price you paid was a bit high…they could go down even more during their 30% + 70% discounts that they have occasionally. On the other hand, The new retail carry-ons have a different interior design than the one you showed. Again, the purple shimmer is beautiful inside and looks more eco-friendly, organizer friendly and better layout.
Morale of the story…if you really can’t afford more, Amazon basics is good, not great. It gets the job done and if you treat it well, you can get 10+ years out of it.

I’ve always gotten my luggage from TJMax/Ross/Marshalls- such a great value, and they come in fun prints so I can FIND my luggage at the airport.
Finding luggage can be so difficult. I was very fortunate 10 years ago to hit a good sale at Macy's and picked up a great Samsonite hardsided set. Each piece has been a trooper through many domestic and international trips... and hardly show any wear. I feel for the people who aren't able to find a bag that works. I do like the bag you reviewed at the end- that's a keeper! Have a good one, Jen!

Carry on suitcases seem to very greatly 35 to 46?liter. When comparing check on luggage or any luggage, make sure to compare the actual capacity and weight of the luggage.
I was thinking I was the only one that the handle loose bothered me! Wish we could afford away! We found American tourister at Walmart has a really good one. It’s like a rugged line but works very well.
we like the under seat rolling bag for my younger kid - she felt so independent and wasn't weighed down by a bookbag walking through the airport

I actually think the first video of yours I ever saw was a packing video with that Away bag on the other channel when I was researching the brand and it was the push I needed to buy it. Absolutely no regrets and I have a full set of Away now plus a lot of the accessories. Yes they’re expensive but people need to realize you get what you pay for. I got tired of cheap bags I kept having to replace. The organization and build quality is fantastic. Customer service is too. Sometimes it just pays to spend more.

Go to TJ Max! I have had the same roll-aboard for 6 years flying 5-6 times a year. (cost less than $50) If you have money to spend on the high end ones that is fine but it is not necessary. I love your packing videos and learning ways to pack so I don't have to check a bag.
Im a new subscriber and like many others before me have said, i really enjoy your positive attitude and down-to-earth personality. Loved the content today; so helpful. The random trip to TJMaxx was inspiring. FYI i know Ben Sherman as a funky, upscale clothing line for men. Bought my nephews some of his shirts as special gifts in the past. I also once owned a red Delsey bag i got on clearance at Harrods in the 90s. I had no idea at the time what a great deal i got. It lasted for over a decade. Loved it! However, the second time i bought a Delsey online it fell apart within a year or two of purchase. Perhaps a fake? I've not tried an Away bag yet cause the inexpensive luggage i bought about 7 years ago is holding up surprisingly well through multiple cruises, international, and monthly domestic flights. Sadly, though, i can no longer find it for sale. So, ill probably be in the market for new luggage in the not-too-distant future and will check out Away. Like you, I hate throwing away luggage; it seems so wasteful. And Sadie, oh my word, too adorable. I feel like she knew she was showing off for the camera. 😂 Thanks again!

I purchased the AB navy underseat and AB navy carryon to make a matching set. I sent them both back because of the handles and lack same reasons you didn’t like the hard side. No interior organization options and poor pockets. The underseat was nicer but I still was wary of the handles. I don’t know why I’m hung up on having a set. 🤣 now I’m waiting for travel pro to have a sale and I think I’ll get their underseat and carryon. We travel quite a bit and I just felt like the AB would not last. Thanks for the great review Jen! Oh and also, London fog at TJ maxx usually has a underseat roller and a better carryon option. I felt like LF was sturdier.

Delsey is a really great brand. I got a soft side carryon at Costco a few years ago. That’s my favorite carryon. I did just buy a hard side Delsey which is not a carryon size from Marshall’s ($52 bucks!) I wanted a bag that’s in between carryon size and super giant!
We have 2 Delsey Paris under seat rollers that are very similar to the Amazon under seat roller. They can be handy and serve a purpose. I’m actually considering using one of ours as a carryon for our cruise along with my personal item (the Away vs Monos bags I’m evaluating ).
I’ve had mixed luck at Marshall’s. We bought one Samsonite and has lasted years then a set of 3 that cracked the hard shell the first use. I’ll probably get an Away next. But right now I’m loving my Vera Bradley rolling backpack I got used on Poshmark. Also, thrift stores often have great real cheap luggage!

After purchasing a few TJ Maxx bags over the years I invested in an Away bigger carryon this year knowing I would be traveling quite a bit. I feel like Calpak is fairly comparable but even that let us down last year and we had a broken zipper on one’s first trip out. I love my away so much I actually just purchased the new Neon Pink bigger carryon for my teenage daughter. My husband was a bit shocked at the price but it really is a good investment long term with their warranty.
This is the thing. If you have to replace a bag it quickly doesn't become a good "value".

Thanks for the great video Jen! I did NOT buy the Amazon Basics carry-on and went to TJ Maxx LOL and ended up with a Samsonite and Calpak Carryons. I have had an excellent experience with Samsonite from years of using them since I was a child, and the Calpak has good reviews. This is our first time purchasing Hardback carryons, so fingers crossed they work well for our upcoming trip to South Africa. I would love an Away, but it's so pricey, and my hubby is a frequent flier who swears by Travelpro. if you have any suggestions for packing for 8 days to South Africa which includes safari and city trips keep me posted:)

10:37 You can buy generic wheel kits online to replce just about any of these. You have to go at it from the inside though, and if your liner doesn't have a zip, you'd have to tear it. Also, the wheel colour may not match :P
Delsey has really good bags. Almost the same quality as Samsonite but cheaper.
How does one clean that quilted bag?? I love that hard case luggage is so easy to clean. Anything going onto the floor is going where street shoes have gone and will have so much nasty gunk - bacteria, germs (dog pee & poo, also from people, cigarette ashes, everything cars leak, etc. will all be tracked in by shoes) being rubbed onto that luggage. Handling that after it has gone on the floor is like bare feet in the airport - ICK!!

Lack of a lock is not a dealbreaker for me. I prefer to use my own lock.

I recently went on a 12 day trip. I left my Away at home, choosing to use an expandable carry-on that my wife recently received from her company. BIG mistake. It was great on solid flooring. Unfortunately, it was terrible on carpeting, especially with a backpack on top!
UGH finding out you've made the wrong choice for you luggage while ON the trip is actually the worst - been there.
Try a few spoons of water in your eggs (not milk). It actually helps the eggs stick together when doing omelets.

I bought the Away Large & Bigger Carry-On back in early 2021 from your previous reviews. Definitely happy with that choice.
I'm still not entirely used to clamshell luggage vs the duffel I replaced. My size 16 dress shoes are a little more smooshed than I'd like being forced into 1/2 of the total available depth.
Definitely considering acquiring another of the checked size. I fly Southwest typically so... But if I do, do I continue to match the navy or get one of the new bright lime green 🤔
That lime green is so fun and would be super easy to spot on the carousel at baggage claim!

I was surprised, but definitely interested when Travel & Leisure rated the Samsonite hard-sided "Freeform" luggage as one of their overall top choices!
The online luggage game has become a world into itself and there really some decent options out there that don’t get the same instagram time (and I realize the irony in my saying that with my away travel problem but seriously)
I just got a set of the Freeform (I saw a sale and grabbed it) and I’m very happy!
