    Lets say that this is a great guide, there is two things i'd pick up on. Start at the vavle hole and go round and finish overlapping at the valve hole. As you tension the tape it will always want to spring back into place and the valve stops it doing that. It also has the side effect of cushing the valve and giving it a better seal. I've seen gorilla tape setups where the sealant has got under the tape and the tape starts to lift and the tension you put at the start aids it as the sealant starts to lift the tape. locking it down with the valve means it can't not be under tension.
    And Gorilla tape does get effected by sealant. Just make sure it's tightly pressed down with no air bubbles and it will sit there for a long time but any lips for the sealant get under and it will loose stickyness and just like that one day it will siudenly spring off the rim.

    • @DannysCycles
      @DannysCycles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't recommend slime at all ever, the sealant liquid is doing what you want to achieve with slime except it's doing it better. It will "self-heal" small punctures, won't change how the tire rolls and won't be a pain to clean.

  • @rmg797

    1. Dont use gorilla tape. It works initially but the sealant breaks it down and you will have a flat sooner than later. Its also a pain to clean off the rim bed when its time to retape (sooner than later with gorilla).
    2. Dont start taping on the valve hole side. Start on the opposite side of the valve hole.

    • @DannysCycles
      @DannysCycles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some tire beads are certainly tighter than others, but years of practice really. You can try with some tire levers to leverage it on. As you work your way around the tire, and you get to a point where it's taut, you can start from the end that you have already seated and try to wriggle out a little more slack.

      You can cut the bigger rolls if you clamp a utility knife to the bench at the desired width. Then rotate the tape against the blade. Works well I did it.

      @@WIPEYOURLENZ This is what everybody I know does. Gorilla tape is commonly sold in full width (which you have to cut) or 25 mm width, which is fine if you have 25mm Int width rims but not ideal for wider widths or anything 23mm and under as it will cover too much bead.

    This is good but I think a huge tip that is missed is to tape it in the other direction so that the rotation of the wheel doesnt force sealant at the edge of the tape. If it is the other way, the sealant is pushed over the edge vs. against it as the wheel turns.

    • @DannysCycles
      @DannysCycles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a tubeless setup, probably not, I've also not seen any tubeless ready rims that work with a schrader valve. You can't convert just any wheel to tubeless, you need a tubeless compatible rim (which would only accommodate a presta valve, a tubeless ready tire, some sort of tape (in this case we used gorilla tape), and a tubeless sealant.

    I've tried Gorilla tape a bunch of times...longest I've gotten out of it is 6 weeks before it starts to leak. I got smart and used an actual rim tape from stans and never had an issue since.

  • @bretb8799
    @bretb8799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Gorilla makes a mess to remove later. Took me an hour+ to cleanup - much longer than it takes to setup tubeless on clean rims. Never again! Go with Stans style tape. Trust me!

    • @DannysCycles
      @DannysCycles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've been using gorilla tape for years, the trick to removing it, is doing it slowly and the adhesive comes off with the tape. A little adhesive left behind also shouldn't make a difference in the performance or ability to be able to re-apply more tape or a different style of the tape. Stans is good, but we like this because when we're out on the road or at races, it's more likely you can find a place with gorilla tape than with Stan's. But to each their own.

    3 years old video but I will comment. When you remove the rim tape, it is important to clean the rim with alcohol. Let it dry, clean with a cloth then convert it with tubeless tape. Also, do not pierce the valve hole through the tape with the valve as this can damage the top tip. You have a nice bike repair cabinet but you do things like an amateur.

  • @rp24hours
    @rp24hours 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Gorilla Tape is 3x thicker than NoTubes tape. Ever wonder why the tire is difficult to seat? Gorilla Tape has only about 25% the tensile strength as NoTubes tape. Clean-up? About an hour to clean and re-tape. We've seen a lot of Gorilla Tape failures. Cheap? Sure. Does it work? Not. Sorry...

      Yeaaa I feel like I’m a pinch if it’s all you can get your hands on at the moment on the road/a trip, sure it’ll kinda do. But as a “proper setup” gorilla tape ain’t great.
