honestly, comparing this to the episode with the rockstar dad. You have one dad who's willing to spend several years in jail in an attempt to save his son and another who's willing to let his daughter take the fall so he can get off scot free.
The problem is that unless his son REALLY loves his dad, the kid just got away with murder...literally. He may very well kill again because he got away with it the first time.

I suspect’s statements being used against them was around long, long, long before Miranda v Arizona. Miranda didn’t strengthen the fifth amendment, neither did a weaken it. It simply serves as a reminder that the fifth amendment protection exists. Whether or not the suspect has the wherewithal to use it is up to them.

If you are innocent, then it really wouldn't matter to you. They could lie all they want and not get anything out of it since there is nothing to convict you of. If you are guilty like the kid was in the show, then the lie either gets him to slip up or confess. People lie to cops and lawyers all the time since they don't wanna get in trouble, and they get punished more severely if they do as opposed to confessing. The system isn't broken. People are the ones who are broken. If people never committed crimes or confessed when they did, you wouldn't have cops and lawyers being "scummy"
