      @@mhdfrb9971 Giant Anteaters are not treetop herbivores though. True convergent evolution happens when animals share an ecological niche, and thus similar pressures result in similar features.

    Mammals seems to be the only animal class so far where dome skulls occur in more than one mammal group.
    And both of them occurred around the exact same time.

      Ray-finned fish have 6 different groups with independently evolved heavily armored dome shaped foreheads used for display and ramming. Four of these are cichlids.
      edit: found another unrelated dome-headed cichlid.

      Archosaurs evolved it at least twice, once in the triassic with Protopyknosia and once in pachycephalosaurs, also potentially hadrosaurs like Kritosaurus and Brachylophosaurus at a much lesser extent.

      When your neighbors included: Smilodon Populator, Andrewsarchus, Daeodon, Megistotherium and the Giant Short Faced Bear, you're bound to be on someone else's meal prep. But subduing a 2,000 pound Hippo-Sloth-Gorilla-Horse is no easy challenge.

    Ungulates were one of the first mammal groups to undergo significant radiation and diversification after the KT extinction. There were even carnivorous ungulates, the mesonychids. I'm honestly surprised there weren't flying ungulates!

      So the Mesonychids are part of the even toed ungulates, so not related to Chalicotherium that closely. But also yes, they were very unique and I should do a video on them.

      Sure, but when we're pushing more and more of them to extinction it's also important to keep a good amount of biodiversity, so that when species do die out there's a better chance that some will be equipped to survive.

    I think that the three sloth kind of has the same body plan. They have short hind legs and very long front arms. Which they use to grab food while they sit on there hind end albeit in a tree but still the same. When walking on the ground they also use there nails/knuckles bent back and walked on.

    One of the most interesting paleo creatures to exist were the Paranthropus Bosei or robust australopithicus. Not only were they a human ancestor but they were the only primate to eat primarily grasses.

    People keep calling it a gorilla horse, or a horse gorilla, but that's not really accurate. It was more like a sloth horse. Or rather, the horse version of the giant ground sloth.

    It seems to me that this species' niche eventually got taken over by the pachyderms -- animals which were likely better adapted to doing a generalist mix of long-range grazing on grasses as well as stationary browsing on tree and bush fruit; while, chalicotherium was likely more specialized with regard to browsing and less-inclined towards grazing.

      That's very possible, and I'm not entirely sure if anyone has investigated that. It'd make a great research project for a grad student or something.

    It's funny, but this body plan is one Nature seems to like. The first land animal I can recall having this long front legs, short back legs form is Moschops and it's relatives. It seems to be a very good adaptation for a low to mid-level browser. Even the dinosaurs had a group with this body plan :the therizinosaurs.

    Maybe it was pulling down the branches and then the branches would spring back up and the claws would shear off the leaves, as the branch moved past the claws, that's how I imagine it.

      No, they most likely were similar. In my script I had mentioned them alongside therizinosaurs as animals with similar strategies, but I was recording having just gotten over covid, and forgot while recording, whoops

    Is there a pattern that would suggest that having megafauna young at the the same time as peak fruiting (or just after) let you do a calorific/nutrient rush to get a elephant sized baby within a year? That'd let you outproduce the other megafauna that could possibly work on a 18 month schedule but would have periodic winter babies or non-fertile seasons. So double Chalico births per Elephant over two years.

      Not right now. But there might be some stable isotopes relevant to specific times of year which could support that. I'm not an isotope person though, so you'd be better off asking someone who uses those methods. It also could be a great project for someone looking for a grad school! That idea seems good, but understudied

    Size matters, especially with terrestrial tetrapods. There's a host of Cenozoic land mammals that would have matched many Cretaceous dinosaurs in body size. If those larger than largest mammoth mammals were alive today, would a fossil of an animal the size of a mammoth seem extraordinary?
