Hey Jerry... some advice brother. I don't drive them but my dad did for years and it was my first 'vehicle' I got to 'drive' as a kid while I was on his lap. The flaps covering the grill are for when it's cold outside so that the truck doesn't get too cold when running so it runs more efficient. When it's hot, you don't want that to even be on the truck at all. Secondly, the biggest obstacle to dailying that thing (other than the things you mentioned and showcased here) is that it's so inefficient... it's meant to haul. So you'll want to do everything you can to make it more efficient, in any way possible.. aero, tires, keeping it clean with a good breather and exhaust, using the highest gears you can with little throttle. Also, you don't want to use your brakes a ton... with big trucks you want to use your transmission to slow down a lot and brakes are more for supporting that effort and for emergencies. I'm sure there are people that know a lot more than me, but as a supporter of y'all I hope that helps at all. Additionally, if you REALLY want to get some great advice and really make this project go far and be entertaining and be amazing on your channel... then I'd recommend hitting up either "The Kenworth Guy" since he's a Kenworth focused knowledge bank (www.youtube.com/@AndyTheKenworthGuy), "DGHD" as he's a down-home wrencher that can do anything and has practical experience tearing into these things (www.youtube.com/@DGHD/featured), or last and not least "Mike the Truck Nut" (www.youtube.com/@mikethetrucknut)... specifically his video tackling a truck similar to yours ---> th-cam.com/video/oPIgw8T1UWo/w-d-xo.html I know you guys typically don't get too serious about these kinds of trucks and are more into cars and bikes... but you've stepped into a world that is more brotherly than even the car scene brother. Also don’t forget about truck stops. They’re built bigger so getting around is easier and there’s usually a shop that works on them and sells parts, tires, etc. As mentioned above, either check out other TH-cam channels or find/talk to diesel techs. Change all the fluids and filters Get your tanks cleaned (fuel polishing) Get some spare airline and fittings and learn how to cage brakes. Leave brake caging tools, airline tools, and spare parts in the truck always. Good luck and have fun! It’s a 6 pack because it’s a 6 wheeler.

There's some crazy old-internet/YT energy to this whole video where it truly feels like what you guys love and not just the algorithm-fodder we see everywhere and I think everyone can tell the difference. Loving this so much!
I am so happy that you guys got a truck, I am even happier that you got an old Detroit in it. You need to straight pipe that thing and let those RPMs sing. One of the best sounding diesel engine families.

@@ericmarciniak1 Nah its tiny, pretty sure its a DJI pocket camera with the 180 degree motorized pan. Literally a camera 4 inches tall and 1 inch wide. I had to convert from mm so w/e, it's really small though. Don't some cars have air scoops that are legal? idk about the US car laws.
There are a couple things to watch out for on that Detroit: Don't ever let the coolant temperature get above about 200 degrees. The cylinders are sealed to the head with o-rings and too high of a temperature will melt them. If that is a pre-DDEC engine, make sure the rack is adjusted properly, If the rack gets stuck in the full-fuel position it will run away. Does that engine have an emergency stop flapper in the blower? If it does and you ever need to use it, check the blower seals as the sudden vacuum tends to destroy the seals. Two-stroke Detroits are very sensitive to intake and exhaust restrictions so check the air filter and muffler to make sure they aren't plugged up.
For anyone wondering why these engines are all supercharged, a two stroke motor needs to "scavenge" the cylinder in order to flush out exhaust gasses and bring in a charge, meaning there has to be a way to mechanically force flow. A 4 stroke engine has extra strokes where it can create a vaccum, but if you want to get it done in two you need to use some sort of pump. This is where transfer ports come in when designing a normal two stroke, and the crank case is used as the chamber for primary compression. Detroit diesels have a sealed crank case,(notice they have no need for premix or anything) so the supercharger is essential for use as a pump.
I need yall to leave the cab paint alone. It's gorgeous. The bed you can mess with, make it more usable. But that 70s brown and tan with handpainted graphics needs to live forever!

Downshifting is all rpm based. Depending on the truck 900-1200 rpm. Start the shift and as your going going to engage into the lower gear flutter the pedal 200-300 rpm to find the gear.

When I was a kid I used to wake up early in the weekends to watch cartoons AND "Siga Bem Caminhoneiro" (something like "Have a Save Journey Truck Drive"), a popular brazilian tv show about being a truck driver in Brazil... And I was like "dude, this is the best job EVER! Driving a huge car and traveling around", of course I grew up and found how hard it's to be a truck driver (specially here), but thanks to you guys this video makes me go back to my 90's childhood memories of wishing to be a truck driver!
The downfall of Donut had a silver lining after all. Would have been cool if Nolan and James also joined the crew, it would be like modern day Top Gear
I hope they make a return on this investment. I bought a F-650 tow truck and I wasn’t expecting $1200/month insurance, up to $3000/month on diesel, $600 tire change, $200 oil changes and god forbid you need to be towed a Class 8 wrecker charges $300/hr from when they leave their yard till they get back. Also, you can’t legally park a vehicle over 18,000lbs on a residential street.
25 gallons? How far do you think you're going to get on that? Don't push the clutch all the way to the floor unless you are completely stopped. Dump the air tanks every night. Keep the brakes adjusted, you need to do that about once a month. (It's easy, look it up) Put a shot of grease in the pilot bearing ASAP ( I'm sure it's dry) grease the whole truck. Get that winter front off the rig immediately! Don't drive it in the rain until you get a little more experience, it's going to be a handful.
Yall. Ride the chemistry. You’re obviously friends and it shows through the camera. Haven’t had this much fun on a video since old school roadkill episodes.

Dude! I’m so stoked to see this. The fusion of car culture and truck culture is something we don’t see often enough, and I grew up on the same movies and trucking culture that you did. I saw my own trucking journey reflected in your reactions. Learning to drive, floating gears, fighting traffic… Most of all, that genuine excitement of driving a truck when you get in the groove. I’ve got a 1963 Peterbilt narrow nose project truck, and I’m working on getting a 1980 Kenworth W900A as well, both with Cummins engines. My buddy has a 1967 Kenworth W900 with an 8V92TA, the big brother of your engine. I’m so psyched to see old trucks getting brought to this audience. I’m just a few hours north of you, so if you need help with anything, including registration and California weirdness, you just let me know. I’d love to see a Big Time Big Rigs and Coffee somewhere!
As a diesel parts advisor, let me tell you. Parts for big rigs are EXPENSIVE! Plus, the older they are the less parts are available off the shelf. That being said, Can't wait to see the build!
I have to buy parts for a fleet of 20 trucks and fix them and my lord the prices are insane and turbo replacements aren’t uncommon as well as many other computer issues are wonky asf
FYI, that thing rides so rough because theres no weight on it. that suspension is made to have a big oll full trailer on the back in which case it would feel nice and floaty. Since you are missing about half that weight... it feels like steel rods connected to your spine.
One of the biggest issues with US type trucks. With our European ones, you can still feel it, it's a natural thing, a thing made for something will never feel right without it, BUT... i'd take one of our trucks for "a daily" than this. It should be named the boneshaker. On our trucks, even underweight, the suspension still feels like you're driving a slightly pudgy sedan.
Being a Florida man myself. I’m proud to see you can take Jerry outta Florida but can’t take the Florida outta Jerry. “Let’s buy a 50 year old big rig and daily drive it through LA” most Florida man thing I’ve heard all day.
it's so nice to see Jerry gets so excited about the truck. It reminds me of myself and obviously many, many of us. You get excited about new stuff We get to enjoy, for me right now. It's parks for my Golf because I'm in the middle of building it for my first real car build. I love this. It's so relatable. Obviously. This is a bit bigger of a scale but same premise.
Side note from driving detroit trucks, drive it like you stole it. You can not hurt it, the engine governor will not let you over spin it and it likes all the rpm
As a driver, couple things. Float the gears no clutch. The transmission lube is ran off of a shaft. So pulling it out of gear when slowing down starves it of oil. So downshift always. Next thing, it’s a 2 stroke Detroit. Do not run it to full throttle especially after sitting. It can lockup the rack and run away
Aren't detroits made to run full throttle? In gensets they sure did, ramping up in a second or so. I'd think the risk of running away is mostly related to maintenance. So maybe good advice anyway but maybe not as a general rule.
@@mjouwbuis”after sitting” as in for more then a few months. In general it is never a good idea to fully rev a mechanical diesel during or immediately after startup
@@kyleblume6530 i feel like that’s good practice for any engine, and pulling it out of gear will not starve it, the oil is everywhere all the time and wether its in gear or not if the truck is on or moving there is a shaft spinning inside
@@rob2257 I mean, you can use the clutch for shifting gears even in an unsynchronized transmission, but because of how many gears there are on a truck, you'll probably wear out the clutch from that. And since unsynchronized transmissions don't have synchros (mindblowing), floating gears won't wear the non-existent synchros like it would on a synchronized transmission assuming the driver knows how to do it smoothly.
I sadly did that when my impala was new (on a smaller road) and I just dailied my sportbike for 3 years LOL it felt like I went from a speedboat to a cargo ship.
When I was helping new drivers learn I'd tell them on U-Turns "Don't halfway it. You gotta all-the-way it. Get wide and then turn that wheel as far as it will go (usually 2½ times)" There was further instruction involving not letting the trailer fold up the sleeper, but the heart of it is getting wide and using full turn power from the get. Also the slower you go the tighter you will turn. Because if you try to put any pedal in it you'll run over your own tires. Creep it.
That animation at 8:12 will probably go unnoticed since it’s so flawless and helpful. But that is very creative, digitally manipulating the photo in the book to make your animation. Great!
As a graphics designer, I can already imagine what it was like for the animator, because I love projects like this, but there are always technical bits that can easily get misinterpreted when translated into a graphic. The feedback from experts like Jobe and Jerry would probably be more like “do this to make it look cooler!” Instead of “no, that part’s supposed to look like this!” It’s little things like this that tell me it’s not just these two boys that are enjoying the new freedom they have, but also the creatives in the background as well. Amazing job everyone!
@@mikukumikuthat’s awesome. I’ve never done any video editing or graphic design but it’s something I always notice when watching stuff. I just think how hard it would be for me to pull something off like that sitting at my desktop

Step 2 would be to buy an electric grease gun and a case of grease tubes. That’ll potentially save a fuck ton of money down the road Make sure the tires are fully pressurized to normal spec which is typically 95-110 psi depending on load rating. I doubt you have anything above 110psi. I don’t know what California laws are with inspections, but most brand new not recapped semi tires start with 24/32 of tire tread and the minimum is 2/32. Those Michelins could last 150k plus miles easily with no load on it. And you may have different tire treads on the steer axle compared to the drive axle. Fun little fact for ya each wheel (rim and tire) on 22.5 steel rims weigh aprox 275-300 lbs.

The old-school paint is rad, I instantly envisioned it as a baller hauler , rolling down the highways with a mint, black and gold flake firebird trans am in the back. But seeing your bike going in there is also cool. I'm sure there's motorized assisted lifts and drop down options you can get to make it easier or at the very least a large ramp to drive it up. It would be a good idea to try and find online an original service manual for the vehicle so you can find out what every switch and knob is for, check service records. check for spare parts online, aside from more power, I'd just upgrade the sound system and add a tall bed cover in the back so your cargo is covered, and could ass a small pit station with tools, spare tires, parts and some towing options as that in itself will pay for itself in favors and I owe you one for friends, neighbors and strangers you chose to help.
As a garbage truck driver who spends 85% of his day driving on residential roads, it is so stressful maneuvering around cars parked in the streets. Especially at the end of courts and cul-de-sacs not to mention landscapers and furniture/appliances delivery trucks parking in the middle of the road. Good luck on your endeavors and glad you fulfilled a wish of yours. It's pretty cool to drive a commercial truck.

@@Odin1465 no syncros in bigrigs, if the engine speed and transmission speed are not manually synced it will not go into gear. The pattern is the easy part, getting the right gear for the right speed is the tricky part
My dad was a truck driver for decades. Two things. His 1984 Freightliner FLC120 put 2.4 million miles on a single engine block. In his words he has worked on or replaced everything on that engine except the block. It finally gave up the ghost after nearly 35 years on the road. Second thing that I am going to predict you did realize that that bigger everything means you need bigger tools. I can't wait until you see the kind of wrenches and socket sets you need for a big rig.
I've worked on heavy equipment and you are absolutely correct, tools so big they're in a class of their own. You've never seen or even known wrenches get this big. Get ready to buy oil by the drum. Oh yeah and it's great fun when one of the wheels decides to lock up from an unknown air leak. But hey what else do you expect when you want to go BigTime? ;)
It depends on the gas station some limit it lower actually. It all just depends on the hold they ping your debit card for. Most of the time if you pay in cash inside there is not a limit.
See, I'm wondering if it's a 360 camera that they're using. Not unlikely they used an actual camera then flipped it in between, but I'm thinking 360 cam.
Tip for down shifts. Memorize speed and rpm range for two around town gears at first. The higher gear is your go to the lower is your oh shit gear. You never want to brake in neutral, it makes the truck harder to slow down and if you need to accelerate to maneuver you're gonna be chasing gears and grinding trying to find one until you know the truck better. Driving a semi is all about planning ahead and anticipating things.
That outside front windshield camera angle at 4:18 was dope and different. I can not recall seeing that in any other videos on TH-cam. Loving this channel and the vibes of car guys being car guys!

There are a couple things to watch out for on that Detroit:
Don't ever let the coolant temperature get above about 200 degrees.
And someone has decided to close half of radiator opening hole with these doors, in LA. Very strange temp. management.

One of the biggest issues with US type trucks. With our European ones, you can still feel it, it's a natural thing, a thing made for something will never feel right without it, BUT... i'd take one of our trucks for "a daily" than this. Side note from driving detroit trucks, drive it like you stole it. You can not hurt it, the engine governor will not let you over spin it and it likes all the rpm
Treat her mean to keep her keen
Slam your hand in the door on the way in to put yourself in the right frame of mind to drive it.
Yeah if he knew how to downshift it to slow down
They call the Detroits screamers for a reason!
LMAO
Yeah, I didn’t think you were supposed to use a clutch except taking off in an unsunchronized transmission.

Get wide and then turn that wheel as far as it will go (usually 2½ times)"
There was further instruction involving not letting the trailer fold up the sleeper, but the heart of it is getting wide and using full turn power from the get.
Great!
Agreed. That was one of those "wow, how'd they do that" moments when I saw it.
As a graphics designer, I can already imagine what it was like for the animator, because I love projects like this, but there are always technical bits that can easily get misinterpreted when translated into a graphic. As a Diesel Mechanic, step 1 is buying an ace torch, and putting a rosebud tip on it. 99% of your problems can be solved with a little bit of heat
Can't be tight if it's a liquid
Step 2 would be to buy an electric grease gun and a case of grease tubes. That’ll potentially save a fuck ton of money down the road
Make sure the tires are fully pressurized to normal spec which is typically 95-110 psi depending on load rating.
A set of 3/4" sockets tools. 1/2" is not going to touch chassis bolts.

But hey what else do you expect when you want to go BigTime? ;)
7:15 YALL BOUGHT A SCREAMIN DEMON???? this is the exact thing ive always wanted to see a car youtuber do im beyond hyped
All gas pumps have a $150 limit. You need to fuel at a truck stop to fill up completely without it cutting off. Great content, love it man!!!
you also get the bigger nozzle at truck stops so you can fill way faster
It depends on the gas station some limit it lower actually. It all just depends on the hold they ping your debit card for. Most of the time if you pay in cash inside there is not a limit.
@@LewdnCute It's not the gas station that prevents people from getting more than 150 at the pump It's the bank that people fill up their card with
@@Blurplemk4tdi I was under the assumption that the gas station sets the amount that they ping the card for.
@@Blurplemk4tdi close. It is actually the card processing service they use. I can use the same card at different stations, and have different limits.
4:18 now THAT was smooth
See, I'm wondering if it's a 360 camera that they're using. Not unlikely they used an actual camera then flipped it in between, but I'm thinking 360 cam.
@@HowardYing1maybe something like a DJI pocket on a remote control.
As an American Truck Simulator veteran of 2 years I agree. 😂
@@erubielalanis6658 as a former American unsimulated truck driver of some years I appreciate it 😂
That outside front windshield camera angle at 4:18 was dope and different. I can not recall seeing that in any other videos on TH-cam. Loving this channel and the vibes of car guys being car guys!
Why pay for television when there's quality content like this on TH-cam??? Seriously. Top tier quality. Great production value fellas.
Can we take a second to appreciate the shot at around 5mins, where he's talking inside but being filmed from outside the car???
I really dug that!
Seriously! It gives some BBC Top Gear vibes
That I had to rewind for 😂
360 cam plus a mic im guessing
that's some action movie quality shot right there!
Definitely can tell that Jerry wrote the scripts for Up to Speed. 1:56
