    The white building next to the Palacio Municipal was my great grandparents' home: Karl Brucklmaier and Luisa Larrinaga. My grandmother and her siblings grew up there.

    You gave a great cathedral tour. The first female saint draped in brown is St. Teresa. 😇

    In 1999, I went to Maytorena., about 10 miles east of Guaymas, for Christmas with my boyfriend to visit his family. It was a warm wonderful time. The day after Christmas we went to Guaymas to the match races, We recognized horses from CA and AZ tracks there.

      Oh how neat! I wish we were staying long enough to see that. It is a nice area, I haven't made it to Maytorena yet because there was local flooding and our car has a low clearance

      Me too, I've only been really aware of anything beyond border and tourist towns since I started watching Tangerine Travels on TH-cam. There's a lot of neat aspects to Mexico, but our media only speaks of border crises and crime because that sells advertising

    Mexico’s lax in comparison to Venezuela where the Police carry AR15 near their Politicians Statues, and you can’t get as close.

    • @TheAntiqueNomadLive
      @TheAntiqueNomadLive  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do see armed police frequently but they seem to stay in convoys and it seems they are mostly for show, truthfully. Mainly seem to be guarding PEMEX oil facilities

    That is a lovely town. All I hear is all the bad elements. It's so nice to see that's not all there is.

    • @TheAntiqueNomadLive
      @TheAntiqueNomadLive  ปีที่แล้ว

      I discovered that too! I had an unrealistically negative view of Mexico based on US media, which has an interest in portraying things abroad as scary and dangerous so that they can sell ads and keep Americans and our dollars in the US. I'm glad I came to see for myself!
      Mexicans and American expats have both been very lovely and warm to me here. They all agree that there are bad people and bad places to avoid, and that if you don't go looking for them you are unlikely to find them. I wouldn't suggest wandering through a barrio at night here...nor would I suggest doing so in Chicago.
      Mexico has a very high homicide rate, but when you look behind the numbers, it almost is all about the drug cartels and their wars with the police and each other. Otherwise, overall crime is worse in the US.

      I do agree! The juxtaposition of wealth and poverty makes a thinking or feeling person consider the shortfalls of the "winner take all" system

      I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I do not have the background in Catholic iconography to understand all that I see, but it was quite beautiful. I learned afterwards that the Cathedral here was designed by an architect involved with the design of the Eiffel Tower!

    I am thinking of staying in Guaymas for a few weeks, but wow, it looks so desolate compared to bustling Hermosillo. Is it just the cool weather, or is the cartel conflict keeping people from getting out and enjoying their city?

    • @TheAntiqueNomadLive
      @TheAntiqueNomadLive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is chilly here this week! We hear the cartel conflict is this and that, but in reality it is so limited to where people are engaging in such bad behavior that it does not spill into mainstream society here...just like in the USA. If you don't seek it out it is unlikely to come to you. The downtown is very busy in the commercial district, but the plaza and waterfront are mostly government and industrial buildings. The other reason is that most of the tourists go to San Carlos, which is set up for them and is just 12 miles away...we wanted to show something old though, that is what my channel is about after all

  • @gardendaisy
    @gardendaisy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great footage but depressing

    • @TheAntiqueNomadLive
      @TheAntiqueNomadLive  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a different society, but honestly I see the same problems of dilapidation and poverty in a lot of American inner cities. It surprises me how not so different it seems compared to our declining industrial cities in the US, I honestly saw worse things in Chicago on my last visit.
      I do think it's a cautionary tale of what happens when wealth accumulates to a select few people in a "winner take all" society where people become hardened to the poor and their plight. It is clear that there is plenty for many people, and poverty has declined dramatically in Mexico since free trade started in 1995...but for the have-nots, there is not much hope.
