  • Chain pickerel get no respect. They're overshadowed by their pike and muskie cousins, but Joe Cermele has a soft spot for them.

Fishing can be slow. Podcasts about fishing shouldn’t be. That’s why we created Bent, the unapologetic fishing podcast that moves faster than a tournament bass boat, but doesn’t take itself near as seriously. Give it a listen for more from Joe and the MeatEater Crew: bit.ly/2XX4hck

My first experience with pickerel was in Maine. Being an Oklahoma/Texas boy I had ZERO experience with them. There was a small pond on the edge of town that was loaded with with. Little did I know that we have both chain and grass pickerel here in OK! Also turns out that the fish in Maine were almost twice the size of our records!

Here in NB Canada we have lots of chain pickerel you will typically catch 30 to 50 on a good day mostly in the range of 17 to 25 inches. We use spinner baits, zoom horney toads and flukes in colors white or pink and the mepps timber doodles paired with white mr twister split double tail. Rod and lines we use 40lb braid to barrel swivel with 2ft leader of 40lb seagar fluoro and large good quality snap swivel. With the 40lb fluorocarbon and a number 4 eagle claw snap swivel you never snap a line. Fun as hell to target a hot summers morning along the banks of the Saint John River.

With regards to leader material, I find nitinol to be the best I’ve ever used.
It’s a titanium nickel blend that has very similar properties to the wire he’s talking about (you can knot it with ease) with less diameter for when the fish are a bit more finicky. Knot2Kinky is the brand I’d recommend.
