This episode gives me Big Shad Dreams. Been too long since I got to hang with Miles on the water! Glad we didn't put the drone up when we were fishing frogs in Minnesota LOL
The house I grew up in, you could stand on my back patio and look into Valley Forge park. The house down the street was General Cornwallis’ headquarters.

Good episode-I am from hunterdon county and caught my first shad with Dieter-he will get you on the fish for sure. It’s not the most challenging way to fish but good to try once-wading for them can be more fun if you time it right. I look forward to the next episode!
@@bigwater_outdoors i just found out about Bent and have hours of listening to do, but I wish they invested more into fishing. Its so much more accessible to the average person
@@crumples8 "has enough fishing as it is" There are TENS OF THOUSANDS of species of fish and they caught one in the entire series. The show needs to be changed to "big game eater"
I’ve fished the Shad run on the upper Potomac in DC for several years now. It amazes my how their want for different lures changes. Kastmaster spoons are legit the go too if you don’t want to rig up a shag rig with a dart and spoon follower. But I will say this, when you do have a Shad rig and get a double up, it’s an epic fight.
I've fished in a spring fed creek where the water is shallow and crystal clear so you can so the fish easily. When the weather turns like that the fish get so sleepy I could pull them out of the water by hand a lot easier than catching them on rod an reel.
They are EXCELLENT canned. Light smoke (still raw) and process. The bones will soften just like other canned fish. As basically a very large herring, they are excellent pickled and will yield a product that is identical to pickled herring you buy at the store. Again, the bones soften and are eaten. Red bead in front of a red #6 Gamakatsu hook, 30 inch six pound test leader, barrel swivel and egg sinker (not too heavy) on the main line. For bank anglers, cast up current about 45 degrees and let it drift until it is almost straight out in front of you and then begin reeling slowly until it is about at the 45 degree point downriver. This is where they usually strike. If nothing takes it at that point, reel like mad to avoid hanging up and repeat. Save the carcasses for crab bait. They will set out an oil slick bigger than a tanker driven into the rocks by a drunk skipper. Strips of fillets make excellent bait for halibut and sturgeon as well. Wrap stretchy thread around the meat/skin where it is hooked and up to the eye of the hook to avoid losing it. In the Columbia River, the run is peaking around June. You can go to the Fish Passage Center website to see when they are moving through. The run is over now, but 5,589,759 shad moved through the Bonneville Dam in 2021. Keep in mind that ALL of those fish have to run every mile of that river to get where they are going. No need to wedge yourself into the masses that gather below the dam. If you are keeping them to eat, bring a cooler with ice and like they did in the video, bleed them as soon as you land them before icing them.
These Shad if im not mistaken are similar to the much loved Elish fish from eastern India, very oily fragrant. It would do well with indian spices and with mustard based curry.
I've got a killer shad spot in Michigan but I've only ever used them for channel cat bait (of which there is no better bait). Maybe I'll have to keep a roe shad and check it out. Good episode, Cermelli
Joe, i remeber reading your articles with sports afield enjoyed them so much! You should plank those shad with ash planks , tack the fillets, hot fire with the same ash wood to burn, put them on the outside of the fire. watch them with a cocktail of your chose, enjoy,so yummy!
Growing up near the Columbia, I get excited every June when these fish show up. I’ve tried to eat them but I can’t do it. Smoked is the only way I’d eat them. Some say canned is tasty but never tried it. Casting 1/2-3/4oz sinkers and swinging a shad dart has been the only way needed to catch these powerful, streamlined fish!! I might try the roe now!!
I wish Joe and Miles would do another show or podcast. Nothing against the new Bent, but damn I miss the Joe/Miles dynamic. I still listen to the og Bent episodes with regularity.
Just like hunting is not called killing, fishing is not called catching. I've had many a beautiful day of hunting and fishing where I've not seen fur or fin.
I just spent the last nice fishing day of the year on a beautiful pristine Lake by myself for 3 hours. The thoughts I had in my head of the pictures I would take of the fish I would catch or extraordinary I caught nothing. Still enjoyed the time on the water though
Grew up in eastern sacramento ca I would be sunburnt from shad fishing on the American river so much, using weighted jigs with grubtails. Sometimes you incidentally nail a striper or 2 with the same jigs. They taste alright but are extremely boney so I just release them. Asians crowd out the river banks and fill up their coolers with the fish. They have all kinds of techniques to dealing with the bones
@ Cara, cê já viu a outra série que ele fez na field and stream? Chamava "hook shots". Bom demais. Bem na mesma pegada que essa "b-side". Se ainda não viu, vale a pena.

It's a joke. If it offends you, watch a different program. Creators shouldn't have to tailor every throwaway line so that nobody gets offended anywhere. This is why there is no comedy in America anymore - everybody is afraid of being canceled. This is ridiculous. The problem is yours, Kyle, and therefore it's for you to deal with by either growing up or tuning out.
@@kdkulhanek While I overstand that there is an illicit drug problem in America, you misunderstood my point. The clear point is that it's YOUR PROBLEM that you are projecting your personal sadness/insecurities/etc upon the entirety of civilization by having the mindset that because it bothers you it therefore shouldn't exist in the public sphere. More directly - just because your uncle had problems, that is not a precedent to demand changes to other people's lives. 🙄
