Just took a private with a brown belt at our school that addressed this very movement. As was mentioned, this is so very important to know. It gives you the ability to reset.

I agree, it's a fundamental movement that u will use over and over if u want to have an effective guard game no matter what guard u use so u might as well learn it early. Not sure why a lot of instructors don't teach this as early and as often as they should.

I love the granby. A blue belt practiced it with me a while back (I'm still a white *cough* sandbagging *cough*), it was the first time I really saw it. He's a stocky, muscular guy, not very flexible, but he was able to do it, after he got the coordination down haha. I agree that this should be a fundamental move, and I agree it doesn't take too much flexibility either, the 'hardest' part IMO is understanding the movements, not so much the physical requirements.
Thank you for the video boys!

Thanks, really good! One question though: there's a great video by Firas Zahabi on this technique where he stresses that while doing the roll, you must keep your eyes locked and head turned towards your opponent, otherwise you compromise your posture and expose your back. What are your thoughts on this detail? Thanks!

Do you think shooting a triangle would be a practical option while doing the half granby sometimes?

It might work on a lower level opponent.
It's unlikely to work on a good opponent, but maybe it could if he/she is tired.
The key issue is that you usually can't get a triangle on an opponent unless they're off balanced, and very few experienced grapplers will be off balance from a granby roll. Once again, when people are tired, even the best black belts in the world make big mistakes (for example, Braulio Estima pulled Marcelo into a triangle without much of a set up after Marcelo swept him, Rafa Mendes pulled Justin Rader straight into a triangle without any set up after Rader was exhausted from defending other submissions, etc). If you have mastered the triangle (or want to eventually master the triangle), then you should try to shoot it whenever you see the opening.
