This game has one of my favorite antagonists of all time. It goes into far greater depth as to his origins and what drove him to evil, because you unknowingly play as him for a time and see the tragic events and betrayal unfold from his perspective. It's rare to find a villain you can empathize with, and as a whole, I found the cast of characters more compelling than in most other Square games.
Remembering this video today on the day I'm able to pick up the HD-2D remake of this amazing lost gem of the SNES's era. It's because of this video that I played the original SNES release and it's because of this video that I marked out so hard when they revealed the remake five months ago. After so long, it's finally here. I can't help but cry, because the thought's bringing tears to my eyes. Dazz, and everyone at DYKG, thank you for your video on this game. I'd like to think you were the reason the remake happened; you shined a light on a game from Square that truly, truly deserved the love put into it.
Seriously, for those that have never heard of this game until now, and it seems interesting to you I highly encourage you to emulate it with the fan translation. Live A Live is one of the most unique RPGs on the SNES and it has a soundtrack that is most certainly on par with the likes of Chrono Trigger and FFVI. Don't watch the spoilers if you haven't played this game before. I'm serious. Chapter 8 of this game is one of my favorite parts of any RPG I have ever played.
"Each ending has an impact on the game's finale." Well, the game over endings don't count towards completion, you just have to reload a save. The only stories with more than one actual ending are the Western chapter, the Ninja chapter, and the Kung Fu chapter.
With the Kung Fu chapter having the most impact (which of three candidates, each with their own stat spread, will represent it) of the three (the other two just affect the gear and/or level of that chapter's character.)

"There's no confirmation of how the game's name is pronounced", he said, as the phonetic spelling of the game's name slowly grew larger on screen. But it's a great in-depth look into a game I never knew existed, and I love the video regardless. :)
Luckily, each Japanese hiragana or katakana character has only a single pronunciation, and they follow a very straightforward repetition of five vowel sounds. Once you know how the vowels sound, you can pronounce every phoneme pretty acceptably. It's not a big deal, obviously, but a quick video (at only four minutes, this one still manages to be overkill: th-cam.com/video/VPJIwff3w0I/w-d-xo.html) and a quick google for "kana chart" will allow Dazz to butcher Japanese just as well as he does English with his adorable accent. :P
Yeah. I wrote this under one other comment, but I will say it again here... Even if he can't read it himself, he could have asked one of his 2.1 million subscribers before he put out a video saying this... In fact, even if he knew no katakana and had nobody to ask, a simple comparison shows that the first word ライブ is equal to the last word ライブ. That, by itself, should tell him that the first and last words are pronounced the same way.
Actually the title foreshadows what happens afterwards as "live" is "evil" spelled backwards. So title is actually "Live-A-Evil" . CORRECTION: I was wrong on this. The katakana below the title say raibu a raibu, so the title really is Live-A-Live. Still, the fact that the "Live" is inversed on the title is *NO* coincidence. Great game, and the eighth chapter's twist made my jaw drop the first time I saw it. Also, the developers did their research. The Sundown Kid chapter's ending is based on actual historical accounts. It's a shame that Japanese copyright laws will never allow this game to be played legally here. Oh, well, there's always emulation.

Ohhh I love this game, and the era it represents for me -- the early 2000s "SNES revival era" of tons of people online going through all these awesome games like Live-a-Live and Seiken Densetsu 3 that were suddenly getting fan-translations. It was a great time to share all these fantastic games like they were brand new with the internet. I've never played the 2.0 translation and it looks fantastic; it's time for me to go back through this gem once more it looks like.
I remember everyone would not shut up about seiken densetsu 3! Like it was on par with everyone talking chrono cross & ff6. Which makes me sad because there were some truly hidden gems that never released outside of Japan.

Live A Live features ones of Square's most interesting antagonists ever, like at Top 5 in my opinion, it's a shame the west didn't officialy get this gem.
I always pronounced the game as LIVE A LIFE. To me that makes the most sense, each chapter you are playing the life of a different character, and like wise the title mirroring LIVE to say EVIL, is foreshadowing the fact that you are not only experiencing the different lives of characters facing a great evil, but one character in particular is very much the source of that evil to begin with, so you are living their life as well as their evil.
In 1994, the game sold a little over a quarter of a million units in Japan in its lifetime after coming out mere months after Final fantasy 6. In 2022, the remake/remaster of the game sold half a million units in less than 2 months, being sold worldwide, exclusively on Nintendo switch coming out a mere week before Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The demand grew exponentially over 25 years. It was well worth the wait!

Never would I have ever expected them to do what Nintendo never could’ve and not only actually localize this, but actually give it the HD2D REMAKE treatment as well!
Seems like a proto Chrono Trigger, the designer must've brought in alot from this into Chrono. Sure, some of it to FF4:AY but I mean the style and all the time frames.. Just screams Chrono Trigger. Seems like a cool game!
Wow I am here from the Nintendo direct on 2/2/2022 and can’t believe a game with this detail of story came out on SNES! So glad it’s seeing a remake!
Wow......
SPOILERS!
Oersted turns to “Odio”....as in Hate in Spanish.Deep and sad.😢
It seems like a really interesting game. Many gems stayed in Japan.
lol
"Square's SNES RPG that never left Japan"
I'm like "which one, lol"
How many other JRPGs from Square-Enix weren’t localized.
@@Ardhamon5000 at least 3
@@Ardhamon5000 yes
@@thedragumox3 that many, huh?
@@Ardhamon5000 over 34 on the snes alone man lol i've just gotten into playing them too and theyre amazing, it's incredible that they've missed the oppertunity to localize them over the last three decades.. the amazing thing though, is that fans have already translated around 24-30 of them already, and the translations are fantastic. websites like cdromance are amazing when it comes to providing roms for us to download where they are already patched with the english language applied, ready for you to load up on the emulator of your choice. i have some loaded up on my wii, my 3ds, ps vita and mini snes haha! highly recommend them
The futuristic chapter with the robot is seriously one of the scariest, most tension-filled segments of any video game I've played on SNES/Super Famicom.
I’m here after the announcement for the Switch version. Never heard of this game, but it looks interesting!
Who else is rewatching this after the Nintendo Direct announcement?
Live-A-Live, hands-on my favorite SNES/Super Famicom game!
You mean hands-down.
This looks really fun! Can't wait to play it
oh man i need to look what the game looked compared to the new HD one I cant wait
So uhhhh.... About it not leaving Japan...
Really happy Tokita got his wish. Shout out to all the original fans who kept this game from fading away.
Cogito Ergo Sum is from Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Classic SciFi short story.
If I had a nickel for every time a Region Locked video gets an international release, I'd have 2 nickels. Which it isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
What was the other one?
@@chainsawvulture Ace Attorney Chronicles
Did the other AA games we got digital only outside Japan ever get ported to PC or Switch?
Also the Famicom detective games
@@makotohan166 Not that I'm aware. In any event, I know 100% Ace Attorney Investigations 2 hasn't come to the West yet.
Which is a real shame, because it blows the first AAI out of the water.
God, I miss Squaresoft...
And i miss Enix
Square enix just knocked it out of the park with the remake.
“Region locked?”
Not anymore.
Can't wait to experience this game, it looks amazing
Anyone here after the Nintendo direct?
I am
I absolutely loved the small plot twist for the Xin Shan Quan/Ancient China chapter. The title "Inheritance" makes total sense for it.
Anybody after the direct?
You know it
I really enjoyed playing this game, glad they've remastered it. Knowing they remastered Front Mission too, I hope they do Front Mission: Gun Hazard next.
Well its coming to Nintendo Switch now in a HD-2D remake that looks beautiful!
9:14 That's a bit extreme.
It's being remade and gonna be here in the west. Ready to play this fresh from there.
So glad this was covered.
This game is too underrated and deserves a remake of some kind.
Shout out to Aeon Genesis!
You guys are the best!
"that never left Japan"
"Lol", said Square Enix, "lmao".
THEY JUST ANNOUNCED A REMAKE FOR THE SWITCH!!!!
This game is truly something beyond words and a point in gaming I feel will never be reached with the same impact it had on me and it OVERJOYS ME that you talked about such a masterpiece
will point out that Aeon Gensis is for the most part Zhi himself though he does get help from time to time depending on the project.
Live-A-Live is so good. One of the few games I've bothered to finish, one of even fewer I've finished multiple times. Even fewer still of the games I have bothered to explore 100%. I recommend to any jrpg fan.
Live A Evil.
Oersted's chapter, basically.
Evil or Live
I don't really sure what's actually the name but
When I searched on google,it's written live a live

I'm glad this game getting remake. Sounds amazing
MEGALOMANIA, BABY
the design is ready.
Joe?
The katakana at the bottom of the screen says “ra-i-bu a ra-i-bu” so whether you lih-ve or lie-ve it’s the same both times.
I prefer using "Lih-ve a lie-ve."
I want a national LiveALive remaster for the switch.
In fact, lets spread this video around to create some hype.
And for pc
The idea sort of resembles octopath
*International*
We’ve got Seiken Densetsu 3 now, so anything’s possible!
This game is art and more people should play it.
Also you probably seen that creepy bad endings video about this game.
Wish granted cause gonna release worldwide
@@ShadeofDespair2468 yes.
A remake was just anounced for nintendo switch for July 22
this video's about to get a huge surge of views, WE DID IT LADS
Looks super interesting and fun can't wait for the remake to hit now.
I find it a coincidence that I’m just now seeing this video and I recently added this game on my SNES Classic and I can confirm that it works, the name of the game and the different storylines is what drew me to this game, I just started play the Ninja Oboro’s storyline. I still need to experience the game more so I can give it a proper judgement.
Never say never
Terranigma and Marvelous were some other very good exclusives. Definitely worth trying!
