Guess what, The Japanese Version of Abe’s Oddysee was censored, the Mudokon Pops had a Mudokon head impaled on a Stick, and it couldn’t be localized in Japan unless Mr. Lanning changed the design of it, because of the Kobe Child Murders of 1997 Mr. Lanning changed it into a Popsicle with a Face on it, if you ask me that's a more clever way of marketing the product, and the fingers were changed from 4 Fingers to 3 because of a Stigma of people having missing fingers.
Oddworld is a cool series it's always stood out to me thanks to its brutal bad endings. It hope they use the rebooted universe to expand upon a bunch of stuff cause the universe of oddworld is wild and infinitely fascinating to me.
I really hope to get a call from Oddworld Inhabitants once a few of my platformers get released. This is my dream series to work on.
interesting. I always loved it cause it was the opposite energy of most ps1 games which seemed to mostly have a childish aesthetic , it was dark and mature
Since oddworld inhabitants have not done sligstorm atleast yet, I can recommend a good read. A fanfiction called 'terminal case of having a heart' it's not complete yet but it kept me glued to the screen none the less. But yes it's about an escaping slig.
Caddy does an amazing job with the Odd series. He even voices as an announcer in SoulStorm.
The Steef Guardian of the River was originally a character designed for Munch's Exoddus - with this in mind, I think Stranger's Wrath was spun from the original story idea for Munch's Exoddus; Munch journeys to Ma'Spa to birth the Gabbiwogs, only to find the Mongo River no longer exists and has been bottled up into a Dam.
Incidentally, when extracting the files from Stranger's Wrath, all of the Sekto Springs assets are still labelled as "Ma'Spa Dam" in the files.
Dang, i woulda liked to have seen a second Munch game. With the new Quintology i'm wondering if we'll see Munch or any of the originally planned characters at all
I think Lorne in one of the podcast episodes said Munch would still be in the new Quintology, but his role might be smaller.
Should note that Caddy marked them as old cause he's not exactly fond of his older work, on top of it being done to make sure people watch his newer stuff as he's evolved his craft and, for lack of a better term, rebooted his channel in how he does content.
Oddworld’s Abe games have far more in common with Prince of Persia’s first game than any other platformer when it comes to gameplay. Story wise the entire series is second to none. Every single game has been compelling.
I grew up with Oddworld and I love them all to death. I played them when I was WAY too young, but it absolutely planted the seed of how much I love atmospheric and weird games. Knowing more about the implications of the story and the history of the production now that I'm an adult has only made me love them more and more.

I emulated and loved the original Oddysee, though I was 4 mudokons short of the 99 (something I will never be able to live down). I'm playing Exoddus right now and plan on buying New n' Tasty this weekend, all to prepare me for Soulstorm, whenever I get my hands on that one. I grew to love this series and have nothing but the highest praise for Lorne Lanning and OWI for all the effort and love they poured into this franchise.
Holy crap, didn't think you'd be talking about this series. Man, I grew up with Abe's Oddysee on the family's old Windows 98. Never beat it as a kid, but during my college years I found out how to emulate cd games and finally did and started playing the others. I wish these games got more attention because the world is so strange and awesome.
I’ve seen gameplay of this game but it was so bizarre I wrote it off as s dream! How wild.

I heard about oddworld in the PlayStation state of play and the Japanese version of the first game from daddy caddy’s video and it’s commercial
Still remember when I first encountered the Oddworld series by playing a PS1 demo disc with Abe's Oddysee. Although it used to be scary as hell for little me back in the days, there was also this incredible fascination for this strange world that has never left me again. Every Oddworld game has its own unique charm but Exoddus will always be my favorite one!

My only experience with Oddworld was playing a family friend's copy of Munch when I was young & didn't know what I was doing. Never made it past the tutorial area but the game just kinda stuck in my mind from both the setting & that random Sobe product placement (my family really liked Sobe back then). Knowing the release/dev history now, wow that initial plan got FUCKED!

Saw the trailer for the newest one and just thought "This looks insane." After watching this video it really is an Oddworld. Gonna check this series out you have made me a fan.

Strangers Wrath is the BEST Oddworld game
id heard of the oddworld series before through brief mentions in caddicarus videos, but as soon as i saw the whole look and asthetic of the first game in this, i knew i would fucking love this series. I am so glad i spontaneously decided to watch this, cause i have been craving some grungy looking dystopian vibes like this.
Oddworld has always been close to my heart; it was the first time I had ever experienced such an atmospheric, story-centric platformer. It’s odd balance of horrific creatures and scenarios with comedy (it has a fart button) is one that’s hard to come by. It’s a strange connection to make, but it wasn’t until playing Celeste that I felt such a natural weaving of story into a 2d platformer.
Thank you so much for covering Oddworld, Oddysee is my favorite game of all time and I'm happy to see it getting attention!

And yeah, Glukkons are not known for their foresight. Or, really, their brains in general. Hell, if they were smart, they'd *farm* animals -- as per the company's name, RuptureFARMS -- instead of just hunting them to extinction.
Great retrospective! I've never tried out the OddWorld games because the gameplay doesn't really click with me, but I've always admired the games from afar for their beautiful art direction and world building.
I Swear the more and more I watch ya Dylan, the more I realize ya may be my favorite Sonic/General TH-camr due to just HOW MUCH you and I are alike!! We both love Sonic, and Oddworld our names are the same and spelled the same and we were born in the late nineties!! Albeit I am as old as Oddworld itself and you are +1 year.older than Oddworld!! Regardless!! I watched this video the WHOLE WAY THROUGH!!! You are awesome and you have good great awesome outstanding and AMAZING taste in Video Game series and franchises!! If the Dev cycle of the Oddworld Quintology is anything to speculate about I'd say roughly about maybe 6 to 7 years a game to wait for... due to New N Tasty having been 2014 and Soulstorm in 2020 but was delayed (probably cuz of COVID) so I'd say we will hear from Lorne again in roughly about 2 to 3 years or so and we should get a new game and a new story the third of the 5 by the time you and I are 30 so yeah see ya then XD
I've never heard of this series but it seems really cool I would get it if I didn't already have a huge backlog.

I goddamn love Munch's Oddysee. One of my favorite games.
I remember playing Earthworm Jim and Abe's Odysee at my friend's house when I was younger. I was the N64 kid and he was the PS1 kid. I was so amazed by being able to possess other characters in-game. Had never seen anything like it.

Would you like to play a custom level mod for Abe's Oddysee? It's a standalone mod (separate, bundled with fan-remade game engine) so you don't need to replace any original game files. The difficulty isn't high and the level design is very nonlinear. If you are interested, the download link is in the description of my newest video. Me and my father played Oddworld Stranger's wrath when i was very little and i still play it occasionally to speedrun.
Tbh the graphics arent really my thing but I gotta give it a try sometime, maybe it’ll grow on me
It can be a little hard on the eyes, but the games are an experience unlike any other!

I played a lot of Oddworld growing up. Thinking back I must say that Strangers Wrath was the most fun I had with the series. Close second is Abe's Exoddus. I also got Soulstorm on release but never gave it a real chance. But thanks to your video I bought Strangers Wrath on the Switch so thank you!

oddworld is my favorite really would love a new 3d game in the series.
Exoddus not being what it was originally intended was less about hardware limitations and more about the fact that their publisher gave them a 9 month deadline to create the game.
Also, the 'Sligs killed' counter in Soulstorm is a leftover from a feature that was originally in soulstorm where killing sligs would negatively impact your quarma. It got removed for some reason, most likely just negative feedback from playtesters
I woulda given that negative feedback too, it's like expert mode challenge level to leave them all alive. Especially during salmon run stages
Oddly my first intro to the game series was a Windows media player visualiser of Munch and from then on I was hooked

The actual story why we don't have Hand of Odd is because Lourne was in the bathroom washing his hands while Bobby Kotick showed up and they were talking about their projects and Kotick told him not to bother due to the gaming market at the time, but my head cannon is that Kotick planted the seed of doubt in Lannings head on purpose because Kotick is a cancer to the gaming community.
Given that we've gotten remakes of Oddysee as New n Tasty and Exodus as Soulstorm, hopefully we can get a remake of Munch's Oddysee down the line. Maybe even a remake of Stranger's Wrath. That'd be cool.

Yep, New n’ Tasty did see a release on the Wii-U. I was one such buyer. I also had the first Oddworld game on Gameboy. I remember when I first beat the game it told me to do it again without passwords. So I did, then it told me to beat it yet again without dying. Before I actually beat the game I figured out that it has an infinite jump exploit similar to the one in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
Beating an Oddworld game without dying sounds like a huuuuge pain considering there is so much trial and error involved. I guess the Gameboy games are shorter though

My one and only gripe thats hindered my ability to playing Soulstorm, I have no controller, and for some reason, theres no keyboard symbols theres only controller symbols, Xbox specifically.
And despite rebinding me keys multiple times, it wont ever let me throw a bottle to quench fire.
I want to love it, its a beautiful game, but they half assed the controlls in it

I hope the devs see this and mathewmatosis vid, I wish they would go back to the as you put it almost grid like movement, I really dont like this new floaty and imprecise stuff. Also the aesthetics especially in new n tasty are way to bright and colourful, we need to bring back the grim dark scary feel of oddworld, and o0ne hit kills would help with that, just keep quick saves.
I'm playing fallout 2 right now and getting similar vibes, definitely recommend the first 2 fallouts, hope beamdog can remaster them

I think I remember seeing an advertisement for new n tasty I guess on a poster or something no matter where I went I could occasionally see abe and I brushed it of as a dumb alien game as abe look always looked like an alien to me heck he still does he looks like e.t but then I was like I'm gonna see for real if these games are worth checking out and to my surprise they did I loved the concept of being a weak floor waxing janitor slave working at an he'll of an industrial factory meat processing plant to being wanted on news as criminal number 1 thanks to the propaganda when in reality you are the good guy saving your race from greedy capitalism and in the process finding out about the history of your race and the planet you live on soo yeah I think these games are artistic genius and should be given much more attention.

for the love of god, stop holding your phone while recording. I know it's not easy to remember a script but not trying to present yourself destroys any respect the viewer has for you. I'm not here to hurt you, i genuinely want to see you get better. also, i think a bit more edits and visual gags would help make the 1 hour of this video go over faster for the viewer...
