If you enjoyed this video, please help share it on reddit, twitter, etc. so that more people can check it out (it helps a lot!) and be sure to check out my latest documentary on the history of Chris Sawyer (creator of Transport Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon and Locomotion): th-cam.com/video/Q15Py17tiEA/w-d-xo.html
Also, let me know which other game franchises you'd like to see documentaries on in the future.
For some reason, I want a video of the Little Bronx Tale series! (Eg. Tail Concerto, and the Fuga games!)
In case that doesn’t work out, I’ll be happy with a story about Double Fine Entertainment! (I LOVE their games! Their game Costume Quest was So nice, I bought it TWICE! No joke!)
This might be outside of your comfort zone as it might not be as retro as the other documentaries. But I think a good franchise to take a look at on how it happened would be Demon's Souls, since this game pioneered a whole new sub-genre of souls-like games.
Edit: Nvm, Matt McMuscles already did a What Happened video on it. So here's another suggestion, Team Ico's ICO, Shadow of Collosus and The Last Guardian. This is one of those cult franchise that secretly inspired the game industry in so many ways, things like Demon's Souls, God of War and The Last of Us.
The golden era of video games
Absolutely this project was so ambitious & has a touch of soul to it that really makes me feel something special
Donkey Kong Country
I never liked how the series's art style became less and less realistic over time. By the time of New 'n' Tasty the rules created for the first games was all but forgotten.
True, but at least with Soulstorm they've seemingly gone back to the series' roots, as it's visually a lot closer to earlier Oddworld titles (in terms of realism).
I'll never forget seeing the commercials for Oddworld and then getting the game for Christmas when I was like 8 or 9 years old. I continued to play that game into the early 2000s and then showed it to a few of my college friends around 2008 or so. Good memories.
Thank you for this great documentary! The story about Odd World's creation is one of the most amazing and unique stories that needs to be told and it's amazing what's been done recently.
Love to see how they spend time and best try to give us a best game with strong history for ps1 ! Wish we could back to 1990…. Old is gold
This hits home for me. The first game I ever saw my older brother played was a bootleg Abes Odyssey his uncle burned. I was 6 and our PC could hardly handle it. I got a copy of Abes Exodus some years after launch after seeing it in a second hand store with the player guide as a free attachment. I love this absolutely weird world. I hope we get more after Soulstorm.
This game was so important to me as a kid, so memorable. I remember playing it a lot and, as we say in brazilliang portuguese, "zerando" (beating it) more than once. This game had such a great áurea around it that it's almost inexplicable. The mysterious, dark and ominous ambience; the violent, opressive and terryfing creatures/animals; the hope, fun and willpower to get Abe and it's race free. All that and much more was carved in my memory with such pleasure that I can't but feel a good nostalgia remembering it. Thank you very much for making this documentary, I'm really greatful for knowing more about it's creation and for being able to have experienced it!
I learnt so much from this about my favorite game and favorite character. Thank you so much.
I love your reviews
Here, Here! I’ve loved this guy’s work too!
Wasn't too wild about Munch, but Abe and Stranger have been with me my whole life. Love them dearly
Oddworld sure has an amazing lore to it's dangerous and yet incredibly detailed world, i'll give "New and Tasty" a try one day if i get it for my switch. Thanks for uploading and keep doing a great job! 6_
Do you have it on The Oddworld Collection? It’s got New N Tasty, Stranger’s Wrath HD, AND Munch’s Oddysee HD all on one cartridge!
I’ve got it for My Switch, although I’m in America! Where are you, if you don’t mind me asking?
A fantastic telling of Oddworld. RR, you're doing great. c:
i always thught abe's ponytail was buu's pony tail and one of the two got inspration from eachother.
Wow! I think this is your longest video that I’ve EVER watched! Thanks for the heads up!
I need more outlaw content, it’s been nearly 20 years since we saw the funniest characters in the franchise. It would be cool if they made a game centered around western mudos again.
Greatly informative and well edited! It's appalling to hear how many times Lorne and his teams have been screwed over, and still deliver some of the best games in all platforms.
I've been watching various videos from this channel, and I think it's incredibly overlooked. Really good work here, hope it keeps growing and delivering more great documentaries!
Thank you for saying that. It truly means a lot! I have many more documentaries I want to make, but TH-cam certainly isn't making things easy. I feel as though I'm constantly wrestling with the algorithm, and it's by far the least fun part of the video-making process.
Strangers wrath is the reason i have such high standards for games. This guy had a perfect vision for how games should be. I wish he had more support.
What a brilliant peek behind the curtains of some of most memorable games ever made, Loved it! Thank you
That “the team was given a heads up” line, if intentional, was a joke as devilish as AO’s difficulty. Well-played.
Very lovely documentary, watched and listened without a single skip
Merci.
Awesome video!!! You hit this one out of the ball park!
Another tremendous video you have made, I loved it ❤
You definitely deserve some more views for your research and editing quality. Hope to see more docs from you on obscure/lesser known franchises.
Tremendous work!
This video is amazing. I intend to watch snippets overtime. Stellar work on this.
Incredible in depth documentary on the games! Gave me a more profound appreciation for the franchise, oddworld is truly a gem
I remember living in SLO county when I walked past their office, having no idea they were even there. I wanted to go in, but lost my nerve. I loved the company already with already knowing Abe's Oddysee and have played it. I thought working for them would have been awesome no matter what the pay was. I would have stayed in SLO if that happened.
Omg yes finally another documentary. I forgot to activate the notification bell!
I loved Abe’s Odyssey. My friend and I were obsessed with everything odd world for a few years.
I remember being a little kid playing abes oddysee for the first time on my dad’s ps2 using the CRT tv they put in our room after they got a new flatscreen. I LOVED the game so much, and my twin sister and I would take turns playing it when we got stuck or died (and I remember vividly having to beg my dad to do the junkyard sections for us because we couldn’t for the life of us so the platforming and even he struggled a bit)
Genuinely one of my favourite games I’ve played ever in my entire life. Horrifically hard for a 5 or 6 year old to be playing but funnily enough that die retry gameplay sparked a love for 2d platformers in me that has me adoring games like rayman when I was old enough to start asking for my own games, then eventually hollow knight, dead cells, and Celeste now. It’s one of the few games I actually remember playing often and loving (alongside super monkey ball deluxe)
Definitely I found my new favorite channel
Knowing the oddworld story was written down before they even made abes oddysee is good. I hope we get to see the whole story one day. Even if its that story he originally wrote, its good to know It won't be lost with lorne lanning.
What an awesome video man, great job!
These games been some of my favorites since I was a kid and I have so much respect for Lorne and everyone at OI for never stopping creating these titles, despite all the hardships.
An interesting thing, not long ago the official Oddworld accounts dropped pics of a brand new model of the Stranger on their social media sites, no captions, just a few photos, makes me wonder what exactly they're cooking right now.
my god how did i miss this "documentary". thanks man, that was very informative!
ps: i hope they bring oddworld and its lore on the big screen or at least make a series out of it. as it was planned decades(lol we old) ago.
Thank you for the video ^-^
It was very interesting and informative about the OddWord :D
Just at the beginning of the video but finally someone who names an other world as influence! I‘ve seen this games decades after playing abe and was flabbergasted by the similarities.
I want oddworld to become as big as fornight so bad bc oddworld put so much effort to the story and lore of their games to go along with great gameplay I want the entire world to enjoy their games
Good channel. me like. want play. Seriously though, I wish all developers would put that much love into their games, it always shows in the end product. Been wanting to play this game for awhile now but, just wasn't sure where to start (other than discombobulating internet searches) Thanks man for a great upload, subbed!
Huge fan of you and odd world
A set of the four games are on Steam for $12. Haven't played it in years.
tho ALL them will stop working one day, fricken steam FORCING to update to windows 10/11 which i DO NOT EFFING WANT! its all about making it so YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR COMPUTER!
well they did a good job. I loved Oddworld as a Kid and it's still one of my Favorite Games
This game is a literal lifesaver
uff i din,t Here Off soulstorm thanks vor informing me
first time knew HAD TO have option to disable music in psx games.
Of course its Bobby Kotick we have to thank for not having an Oddworld RTS today. The man is a blight on the video game landscape if you see them as an art form.
Which he's getting a 400 million dollar severance check while Microsoft is pulling an EA on several studios which brought us games like Hi Fi Rush, and Prey(2017)
My favourite childhood ^^
Omg! I had No idea that Alf was named after a flipping WW2 vet! How did you find out about that?!
Lorne Lanning has done A LOT of interviews over the years, and he's shared all kinds of little titbits like that. Although, in the case of Alf, that's actually a fairly well-known piece of trivia within the Oddworld community.
@@ReliableRhubarbwell, I had no idea! (Thanks for telling me though, I got a little chocked up from that tidbit; first time that happened watching your videos!)
Although, the only reason why I EVER played an Oddworld game is because of Caddicarus, who ironically got to make a cameo in the Soulstorm game!
Still think an Oddworld like a Zelda game would be so awesome.
the non HD version of the game can be modified to access test maps as well as change properties like charractor speed, jump height eta (can make munch FASTER than abe) can this be done in the HD munch oddysee thugh?
I played abes exodus but I was way to young to even understand how great it was at that time.
i know i'm going to offend some people by saying this, but the fangus klot part proves how much of an control freak lorne has turned into. Especially when the team not agreeing with the lannings' cat's vs dogs aspect to be a part of the game. Considering the subject matter. The whole inclusion of the whole their cats, and dogs. That's why they hate each other is that so clever. Just sounds like it would be offensive, and rightfully piss people off. Who were aware of the real life situation it's inspired by.
But what are they doing now?
What will come next
Wait that’s my birthday damn
This must be what the game development company in the book Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is based on!
29:29 the team was given a what?
Hello, hello, follow me,ok. Many thanks for the video, had great memories of playing both oddworlds for the ps1 with my pop's. This game means alot to my childhood and now i will share this with my own kids.
❤
be AWESOME if could make a game as "if it were made in oddworld" "normie world inhabitents; normal world: normies oddysee and its oddworlds perception of earth. got plenty villans to use like scwab gates rothschilds eta.
i remember abe hitting the floor like a sack of shit
😁

Am I the only one that thinks the "New n Tasty" HD version looks worse than the original? Or rather, I prefer the original over the HD remake? Not in quality or resolution, but the atmosphere, artstyle, and atheistic feel better in the original version. The bloom and contrast of the HD remake is to bright, and the colors feel over saturated. The game was no longer dark, gritty, depressing and scary with its atmosphere. It's was turned into something bright, playful and cheery looking with a more cartoony style than realistic.. Something about the original just feels so much better.
There is a popular youtube video about this.
