    Relying on the belief Caesar would not let his men butcher you is honestly a pretty good idea, especially at this point in the Civil War. He was notorious for letting people go free but under a sort of debt (like Crassus but not with gold, lives). Caesar's pardons were strategic to the point where when Cato the Younger was to receive one, he kills himself to deny to Caesar the pleasure of getting to rule over him.

      ***** Julius Caesar would have won most of the seven kingdoms, imagine real battle tactics with highly drilled, discipline legionnaires, going up against knights that do not fight as units, lack discipline, and do not have allegiance or loyalty. Caesar was a hard man, but he also won over his soldiers and his soldiers loved him, that can't be said about Stannis Baratheon or Tywin, or even that blonde targaryean Danny girl. and you can forget about cersei. I'd rather have Mark Antony by my side than Jaimie Lannister. the Only badass in this show was Ser Barristan Selmy, and they killed him off, Pullo made it and he had sex with all the women from gaul to egypt.

    Just finished watching this amazing series. Sad that it couldn't have continued past the 2nd season. I got so attached to the characters. Would have loved to see how HBO handled the rest of Octavian's reign and the eventual Pax Romana where no significant warring was raged.

    • @timlamiam
      @timlamiam 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah unfortunately, while season 1's events are roughly 10 years of history (note how in the show that Octavian was a boy when Caesar was alive and a teenager after his assassination), season 2 was like 20 years of history squished into one, due to budget issues and the show not getting a third season, which is a shame, since season 2 was very rushed and was not the believable golden story that season 1 was. In reality, Octavian was in his 30s when he beat Antony and Cleopatra, not the teenager we see in the show.

      Hard to compress 30 year;s of history into a 12 hour series though , .cuts will have to be made
      ;-)
      Vorenus refers to "8 years in Gaul " presumably serving in the Legions with Caesar , then we had the Rubicon crossing , the war in Greece and the pursuit of Pompey to Egypt
      So theres a couple of years , the Caesar's tenure as the Dictator
      If Vorenus has joined the Legion at 14 say he would be 22 on his return (though 32 would be more plausible for a top Centurion ) , then he had another 10 years till he was in Egypt with Anthony
      that would ring true ?
      ;-)

    Caesar would NEVER have marched at the head of the army with no vanguard and especially without scouts. He was a shrewd and careful planner, down to minute detail, and consistently mentions his use of cavalry scouts in his writings, who ranged in every direction around the army on the march, especially far ahead on the trail. Marching around 'blind' as this scene depicts is just asking for an ambush.

    Rome was so good. It was a travesty they cancelled it. What is amazing is that much of it was historically accurate. Such they fictionalized and embellished aspects a lot of the plot, but the true history of Caesar, Pompey, Octavian, etc makes fiction seem rather tame.
    I loved this scene too. The marching music is awesome as well. It is so eerie and fitting. Pullo and Vorenus unknowingly partook in several key events and moments in history. It is amazing that the Romans and Rome were more advanced and civilized than many other countries for hundreds of years. It is rather striking that Romans lived more comfortably than a citizen during the Middle Ages, for example. It would be amazing to have seen it in person.

Someone grabbed his toga before they started to stab him, and he covered his face as he died.
