That stroke of tactical genius, is actually listed as a real-life situation that be derived from Desperate Ground, in The Art of War, when Sun Tzu describes the 9 different types of "ground"
Candidate is The Devil's Brigade - heavy artillery bombardment of German positions and then they wait till the Germans have emerged from bunkers before charging.
Thomas Longrigg Theres a million things wrong with the charge of the Rohirrim. 1. No horse armor, and lets charge into a wall of pikes. Genius. 2. Only like a few of the horsemen have lances, so they're just going to get impaled by pikes until the pikeman falls down, with like 4 dead horses under his belt because that cavalry line is huge and decieded it'd be smart to charge into one ball of horsemeat. 3. No flanking was done when that much cavalry was deployed. Common sense was clearly thrown out the window.
Demo pan Why you are wrong. 1. Considering the amount of cavalry that the Rohirrim had and how much time it would have taken to equip all of those horses with armor would have taken way too long and Minas Tirith would most likely have fallen or would be extremely close to it if they had decided too. What wall of pikes if you pay attention alot of archers were at the front line or very close to it when the cavalry arrived and the pikemen ( or pikeorcs ) were fleeing which means there pikes are facing the other way and the orcs that are not fleeing are smaller than humans ( correct me if i am wrong ) and would have been trampled by the sheer momentum and force of the charge. 2. If you look at the beginning scenes of the charge since there all grouped then, you see lots of them have spears and they would not "just gonna get impaled" because of what i said earlier. ^^^^^^^^ 3. Most likely if they would have moved troops into an effective flanking position they would have been spotted much sooner which would have giving the orcs alot of preparation time and considering the amount of forces the orcs had if the Rohirrim were to split its troops it would not have as much momentum or sheer power to push through all of the orc forces like they did. The lord of the Rings is has my favorite movies and is my favorite trilogy in it which is why i took the time to do this.
MistyGamingForLife If the moron spent 10 more minutes to have the other half of the cavalry charge through the other side, they would have killed the orcs much quicker. Also, the rapid deployment is a valid reason for no armor, but this lack of horse armor has been seen throughout the movies. Like in the other charge at the end of the video.
Why is it that the fucking police only carry pistols and are placed in the front whereas there are easily more capable swat officers with better armor placed in the back? And why didn't the police bring officers with riot shields and automatic guns rather than their pistols and caps? Makes no sense to me :/
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly might deserve an honorable mention. No heroic music or hand-to-hand closeups, but still a respectable attempt at staying true-to-period, with the creative attention mainly focused on the buildup, but the actual close combat only shown from a distance and largely left to the imagination - probably since the result of the combat is not relevant to the story the movie is telling. Of course, this also adds an interesting perspective - possibly rare in cinema - where a battle is shown in some detail despite the fact that none of the main characters has any vested interest in it's outcome. And the level of detail is huge - it actually held the world record for some decades iirc, for most people ever used in the filming of a battle.
Gettysburg is my personal favorite. The attention to detail and the passion that went into making it not just by the main actors and crew but the hundreds (thousands?) of re-enactors that volunteered their time and own costumes and props. Awesome.
"The Dark Knight Rides" is so pathetically unrealistic it should be listed as the number one most comical charge. Only "Band Of Brothers" and "Gettysburg" was done with the intent of capturing realism.
You know what I don't like about movies? I dont like that the actors don't actually die. What the fuck is this? As soon as the scene is over they just stand walk away like nothing happened. Unacceptabe and unrealistic if you ask me.
The charge in glory is honestly the best. Their commanding officer dies and they charge with a complete disregard for their own well being. Very inspiring.
It's dumb because why the Fuck would the police charge at guys with rifles like that. And why would the guys with guns charge the police. You both have guns. Shoot at each other jesus

fook yu I've always found the DKR scene to be fairly "believable." Anyone who's fired a fully automatic or even semi-automatic firearm can tell you that you can be pretty inaccurate if untrained. Especially if under pressure.
+The indiegamer however given the sheer number of them being fired and the fact that at least a few of these hardened criminals must have fired on in the past youd expect more deaths on the side of the police
Ironic when the two charges from 'Lord of Rings' are more historically accurate than those from 'the patriot' or 'brave heart' At least Lord of the Rings followed Tolkien's script whereas brave heart and the patriot were pure fantasy. Now that is irony for all of you who don't understand the concept.
The “history” in Tolkien’s book was already embellished enough, the battle of cow pens however wasn’t. Also the patriot was not meant to be a documentary, but a story romanticizing the American revolution, which it did extremely well.
‘Patriot’ aka ‘Traitor’ was another of Gibson’s attempts to instil hatred of the English/British into yanks who rely on films and not research for history. What next, Gibson alone - as an all American hero - holding off a million Zulus with a toothpick in a new version of ZULU?
It's completely incomprehensible to me when I try and imagine being an army infantry soldier during WW2. Those men had steel balls and iron guts. Period.
Ben A I thought this video was about real life charges on film or on film adaptations. Not fictional stuff lol Glory is one of my favorite movies. I haven’t seen the other one you mentioned though
The Scots greys cavalry charge in waterloo (with the epic slow motion frontal camera view) is by far the greatest charge I’ve ever seen in a movie, it literally gives me goosebumps
In the Return of the King, the book, the charge of the Rohan is pretty goddamn epic, "Théoden commands his Riders into battle with a great cry “more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve.”" And the line about his golden shield being uncovered. Ya, the book is fucking epic. But the movie did it good justice.
I remember Woody.EXE’s horse charge last year and Mummy was really going for it to get justice for the Queen. I’ll never forget what Woody.EXE told Jessie and he got angrily emotional before ending her reign for good. 2022 ended great
The end of Glory (1989) is probably one of the greatest scenes in war movie history... the combination of music and visuals is emotionally provoking every time I watch it.
A few glorious charges mixed with a shitfest. I mean Batman fer fucks sake. What no Picketts charge? No charge of the light brigade? No Scot gray's from Waterloo, No Zulu's at Rorkes drift? Nothing from The Pacific? Jeez!
Well if any movies about the Pacific Theater in WW2 were put in this list, there will be a shit ton of Banzai charges, but come on, put at least one Banzai charge in the list. Would've been a better choice than The Dark Knight Rises.
I was an extra, for the Pickett's Charge scenes, in "Gettysburg". The Charge of the 20th Maine, at Little Round Top, was what saved the Union line, and decided Lee's disastrous attack, on July 3,1863. Few people, know that Company B, took part in the charge and were the only ones who still had ammunition. They fired into the Confederate troops attacking, as Chamberlain, was counter-attacking downhill. There were also a unit of Berdan's Sharpshooters on the extreme left, as well.
There's a show called Blood and Fury americas civil war, that did an episode all about the sharpshooters. Well worth tracking down. I saw one video which quoted a confederate who said that the fire from company B was the strew that broke the camel's back, and made them retreat.
The early 90s and 2000s movies brings back so many fond memories being a 90 kid. Wow thank you so much for uploading such a video and you don’t know how nostalgic it is to me! Thank you kindly! I really love @5:20 return of the king. Who’s with me... charge with those likes!
Colin S are you mad? The Patriot is a biased movie based off of braveheart, and it’s not fun to watch a set reotypical story with no historical accuracy. The Lord of the Rings is a world renowned series, known for having some of the best movie scenes of all time.
@@shiftyguggs2415 Except for the fact that the French support for the insurgents is ridiculously ignored. @@philliptaylor9129 Pickett's charge was a heroic but useless sacrifice. Chamberlain's attack was much more important. It saved the left flank of the Potomac army and maybe the whole battle of Gettysburg for the union.
That one was actually the most realistic one. Disorganized confusion and the officers struggling to keep everyone together in the same direction with most people doing everything they can to not be in front. In real battles things moved very slowly as it was most important to keep formation if t turned into a rabble you could get wrecked. Even cavalry charges were more like riding into range and playing pokey pokey stabbey stabbey then backing off trying to pick off people until one side had enough and retreated. Bows and arrows couldn't do much damage against even light armour except lucky exposed shots. Horse charging would do serious damage for sure but it would be suicide. Pike lines stop horses dead, you basically accomplish mangling the front line and then you are dead. Cannon balls accomplish the same thing without suiciding extremely expensive horses and trained soldiers.
The Charge of the Light Brigade, 1968, a film that possibly shows one of the most factually correct depictions of a 19th century cavalry charge ever made. No hype, no Hollywood bullshit, just a brutal depiction of a light cavalry brigade maintaining order under constant fire as it moved from walk, to trot, to canter, to the charge over the last 200 yards. A true depiction of history. A desperate charged made by very brave men that never questioned the order once it was given.
@@kyleJohn1997 Waterloo didn’t accurately depict any of the various cavalry charges made during the battle. Waterloo stands as the only film to depict this battle, but it was poorly scripted, and poorly executed. The main players all gave great performances, but these were wasted on a poorly conceived film. Its depiction of the battle has more to do with Hollywood script writing than the accurate reality of an early 19th century battle. I really wish someone would remake the film.
Zulu was great! One of my favorite movies. "They've all hopped it.. it's a miracle" " If, it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant it's a short chambered, Boxer primed, point 45 miracle". " With a bayonet, and some guts, behind it".
You mean "Pickett's Meandering Advance at a Walk", under fire for over a mile? Charge is a relative term. It took Pickett 30 minutes to cross that field, a cavalry unit could cover it in 5 minutes. And still have failed.
This video is not only a way of entertaining us, but it’s giving us the fire and wisdom to do anything in life. When your back against the wall, the odds are against you. It’s better to die fighting with honor then to run with dishonor. Plus it’s also teaching us many other life lessons
Where is the hell charges of french and british cavallery from "Waterloo", charges of Winged guissars, charge from "Mongol", change from "The Lighrhorsemen", charge from "Kindom of Heaven" etc? Just 2 charges from your top-10 are really top: Ride of Rohirim and charge from "The Last Samurai".
IMO: The battle for helms deep is ALWAYS going to be number 1 for me. That battle had everything you wanted in suspense and then the charge at the end with the music behind it. Hands down one of the best scene ever created in film. 2nd would be the scene from the last samurai, the end of that charge when the artillery commander with the pain in his face went against orders and stopped firing and everyone just bowed in respect. Both of those scenes pull at every emotion. 3rd would be the charge at Pelennor Fields with the Rohirrim. However, as epic as that charge was i've always put the battle for Helms deep higher in my list. Gladiator, Braveheart, and Batman just seem very anticlimactic. Everything else was good as well. Over all good job on the video, Great watch!
Guess no one has ever seen Zulu Dawn. Best charge on film. No cgi, incredible camera views, thousands and thousands of Zulu charging the red thin line. Crazy underrated movie
No Charge of the Light Brigade (from the film of the same name, with Errol Flynn...and Korngold's music)? No attack on Aqaba from Lawrence of Arabia? No charge of the Bengal Lancers from Gunga Din? Foo.
"We were soldiers" had an incredibly fictional and stupid Hollywood charge. Which never happened. Instead, immediately following the battle, the 2nd battallion of the 7th Cavalry ran into a concealed NVA batallion which shot the Americans to pieces. American losses: 155 dead, 124 wounded. But for some reason they do not show this in the movie. Heck, they could have made movie about the German warmachine in WW2, showing only its victories during the summer of 1940 for that matter.
YT Recomendation: 2014: No. 2015: Not now. 2016: Nope. 2017: Wait a second... 2018: What u wont from me? Not now. 2019: Another minute. 2020: YES! NOW! Look at this video man, right now!!!
It's most likely never been filmed (unless somewhere in Europe) so it wouldn't count for this but in 1683 at the siege of Vienna the climax of the attack of the relief army was a charge spearheaded by 3000 Polish Hussars leading a total of nearly 20,000 German, Polish and Lithuanian heavy cavalry that completely smashed the Ottoman army. It was the largest cavalry charge in history.

MistyGamingForLife Think he is getting the charge on Helms Deep mixed up with Minas Tirith.

Why were cops charging a mob who had automatic weaponry?
Why is it that the fucking police only carry pistols and are placed in the front whereas there are easily more capable swat officers with better armor placed in the back? And why didn't the police bring officers with riot shields and automatic guns rather than their pistols and caps? Makes no sense to me :/
To make it look more epic
Ridiculous excuse of a film
The fact that they dont have the final scene from Zulu makes me die inside
Same here.
And the Scots grey charge from Waterloo
Fire an advance!
Forgot to mention the charges in: “Spartacus” (1960), “El Cid” (1961), “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), “Zulu” (1964), “Glory” (1989), “We Were Soldiers” (2002), “Troy.” (2004).
And narnia ..not in the list too
And Waterloo
I was expecting to see the final charge in Zulu on this list.
gettysburg (1993) gotta be my favorite bayonet charge scene.
Awesome.
100% agree! Gettysburg is my favorite too!
That score in Gettysburg is one of the things that makes the scene so powerful.
Also, where is San Juan Hill from the Tom Berenger Rough Riders movie?
The score is indeed beautiful and powerful ❤
"The Dark Knight Rides" is so pathetically unrealistic it should be listed as the number one most comical charge. Only "Band Of Brothers" and "Gettysburg" was done with the intent of capturing realism.

Ironic when the two charges from 'Lord of Rings' are more historically accurate than those from 'the patriot' or 'brave heart' At least Lord of the Rings followed Tolkien's script whereas brave heart and the patriot were pure fantasy. @@nuttybangerz Oh no not constructive criticism
Braveheart was based off a novel not the actual events, similar to how 300 was based of a comic

I was an extra, for the Pickett's Charge scenes, in "Gettysburg". The Charge of the 20th Maine, at Little Round Top, was what saved the Union line, and decided Lee's disastrous attack, on July 3,1863. Few people, know that Company B, took part in the charge and were the only ones who still had ammunition. They fired into the Confederate troops attacking, as Chamberlain, was counter-attacking downhill. There were also a unit of Berdan's Sharpshooters on the extreme left, as well.
That is super cool that you got to be an extra for the movie!
There's a show called Blood and Fury americas civil war, that did an episode all about the sharpshooters. Well worth tracking down. I saw one video which quoted a confederate who said that the fire from company B was the strew that broke the camel's back, and made them retreat.

He died so you can write this comment today.
What about ' Glory " ? The end says it all.
Exactly
The Charge of the Light Brigade, 1968, a film that possibly shows one of the most factually correct depictions of a 19th century cavalry charge ever made. No hype, no Hollywood bullshit, just a brutal depiction of a light cavalry brigade maintaining order under constant fire as it moved from walk, to trot, to canter, to the charge over the last 200 yards. A true depiction of history. A desperate charged made by very brave men that never questioned the order once it was given.
Don't forget Waterloo
@@kyleJohn1997 Waterloo didn’t accurately depict any of the various cavalry charges made during the battle. Waterloo stands as the only film to depict this battle, but it was poorly scripted, and poorly executed. The main players all gave great performances, but these were wasted on a poorly conceived film. Its depiction of the battle has more to do with Hollywood script writing than the accurate reality of an early 19th century battle. I really wish someone would remake the film.
