Holden Cruze Running Rough On Start Up - Canister Purge Solenoid Fault

  • Brendan shows a mixture of new school tech and old school physical inspection in this fairly straight forward diagnosis.
This 1.8L petrol Holden Cruze suffers from rough running on startup. Even though there is no check engine light or dash warning lights, the scan tool data gives great direction which leads us to finding a leaking fuel canister purge valve.
Because this vehicle uses a speed density fueling algorithm, rather than a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor - the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor registers low manifold vacuum (due to the leak), this makes the ECM think it is under a higher load situation, so it wrongly injects more fuel, until the oxygen sensors register this overfueling and back the fuel off using negative fuel trims.
The fix we arrive at from this diagnosis is to replace the canister purge valve.
Comments always appreciated, hopefully, you can try this simple test on your vehicle, let us know how you go.

The purge valve the stem gas fumes. Vehicle will run rough. This is caused by dirty gas.

This cruze is exactly same as mine.. RH drive and same purge valve. The problem is that I cannot find the part..

Brendan I have had a number of purge valves intermittently play up, not to the extent were you hear it like the one in your video. The last problem one I had was in a VZ commodore. I knew it was a purge valve because when I disconnected the valve form the intake manifold the fuel trims started to correct themselves. By the time I got my mityvac onto it the valve was not leaking. No matter how I wriggled or knocked the solenoid valve it would not play up. So I left it on the running engine for a while and sure enough as soon as some heat got into it it played up and I was able to confirm it was leaking. I had the same intermittent issue with the purge valve on a Hyundai once.

Yes Maurice, only a couple of days after this video I had one on a VZ commodore alloytec motor intermittently sticking open just like this video. Funny how things come in waves.
