Ya know some people misunderstand Takeru because he dismissed Ryunosuke. He wasn't being rude (at least not intentionally), he was saying that he wasn't so weak he needed protection against lackies
just to let you guys know that this is traditionally how most sentai are you will understand later on in the show but king ohger was one of the sentai that didn’t follow the traditional “ sentai formula” but shinkenger is still an amazing sentai show glad yall are watching
Heads up though, the first ever crossover of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai occurred in this series. You will have to watch an episode of Kamen Rider Decade to get the full context of what happened when the Shinkenger part prompts you to it. Other than that this show is a fun time and was many a fan’s first Super Sentai, including myself.
This is months old, but still gona coment, ironically Takeru is an exception to the Formula on how Red Sentais act up. But at heart Takeru is just like the other reds, is simply that his situations makes him feel he has to act the way he does, you will learn later. But again, His soul is as noble and honest as any Red.
I recently watched Shinkenger, I fucking Love this show so here I am to see someone else reacting! Particullary since I checked you haven't finish yet, so, cool.
If you ever get to Kamen Rider Decade. Here's the episodes that tie in his crossover with Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger: Act 20. Kamen Rider Decade: Episode 24. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger: Act 21. Kamen Rider Decade: Episode 25. Hope this helps so you both so the two of you won't get confused.
I just found out that this series has been remade by the PR. I am quite surprised and think they are really brave to decide to remake a series that is so deeply rooted in Japanese culture like that.
Hey! Shinkenger is on youtube now, nice. This very first episode tells you exactly why Samurai failed as an adaptation of this. On paper it was pretty 1 to 1, but it really failed to capture the same tone and taking itself seriously sometimes; not to mention that erasing every single bit of japanese culture in a *samurai* show just makes it disrespectufl and so alienating. Also the fact that they would never allow the villains to be drunks and actually the souls of damned criminals like this show does.
I'm sure plenty of people will point these out in many comment sections... buuuut, here's an incomplete list of references that PR Samurai just didn't even bother with adapting (and for anyone that might have missed them): Shodophone is best translated as Caligraphone. It's actually pretty culturally deep. There's the saying "the pen is mightier than the sword" but caligraphy was actually one of the most common side skills trained by the samurai specially those of higher ranks (literacy being a noble trait and all that). It also doubles down with their power system relying on writing, not unlike shinto "exorcism" talismans would be written. They also throw around a lot of words like 'official' and 'providence' because they are essentially military with 'imperial and divine pardon to kill'. The Shinkenger are an official militairy force since the 17th century, to deal specifically with the monsters of the Sanzo River. The Shinkenmaru (the standard katana that uses discs) can probably be better translated as "The Earnest Blades". And they use shadow puppet animation techniques on the discs; another valued cultural landmark of the period. The disc also doubles as a tsuba (hand guard) which was one of the most personalized aspects of a katana, with things like family crests. Out of the weapons they use personally (of course exaggerated), the Land Slicer is the only "fantastical" one (though it might be based on makibishi/caltrops and shuriken). Bow and Arrows; and also Spears were far more used by higher samurai than katana were. Rekka Daizantou was probably based on the Odachi they used on horseback, and no joking, fans with hidden blades were used by some female warriors historically. As you can guess, the Origami is another such valued cultural element that was for people of class, and the name doubles. It's not unusual for the mecha in Sentai to be called either "king" or "god" and Origami are "Folding Gods". So it works on multiple layers. If I'd had to guess, the Lion Origami being in the shape of a Shogi piece is no coincidence either. All the monsters are straight up out of yokai tales and old books, too. The full presentation with their entire family + given name is also historically accurate. When samurai generals would face themselves it was customary for a variety of reasons, some of which were bounty hunting and proxy battles. (The actual cultural origin of why anime characters present themselves and yell their attacks, fyi) Since I know you guys are waaaay further ahead with this. Here's an opportunity: Read Takeru's actions in this episode again after learning of his late series "secret". There's already character development going on here.
Trust me. This is SO much better! I am so glad I watched Shinkenger before Samurai. Shinkenger has a special place in my heart because it was intro to Sentai. I also watched Samurai. They basically carbon copied Shinkenger except took out the Japanese culture. It was so disappointing. I expected it be like it was when they were on Fox. They need to reboot the whole Nickelodeon era. Especially super Megaforce. That was a terrible adaptation of Gokaiger. It is Super Sentai thing where the monster have a second life. I have not watched Power Ranger as often after watching Super Sentai. When I watched Zyurangers, I realized how much they censored MMPR and I remember when MMPR first came, how much the parents complained about the violent content. If they watched Zyurangers, you best believe they would be in uproar
Pink may have been treated like a princess because she had her shoes on when she got off the cart. If there is a puddle in a woman's path, it might be the same as a man spreading out his coat so that the woman doesn't get dirty :) I think it's true that it's a good idea to take off your shoes because it's an old vehicle. Also, the translation says "Official Samurai SENTAI", but I have misunderstood the nuance. "Tenka Gomen'' means doing things without hesitation to anyone. is what it means. In other words, if translated with nuance, it means "Samurai Sentai that judges without mercy. Shinkenger, now going." I think. I understand that translation is difficult because there are many idioms in kanji.
I don't know if all your episode had hollow ones as the translation for the monsters but the more accurate definition is The Gedoshu (外道衆, Gedōshū, literally "Heretical Path Masses" or more simply known as "Heretic Party Theyre all supposed to be a parody of Japanese folklore more specifically the standard youkai/ayakashi The heretic party is a play on stories where a mass of a thousand monsters marches in a singular terrifying direction like a giant party out of horror stories
"Have to lower my expectations because it's older"... You serious? New stuff isn't necessarily better. Kamen Rider Saber is newer than Gaim but Saber was trash.

Funny enough, the guy that plays rurouni Kenshin is actually the den o rider from Kamen rider den o 😅
Shinkenger is one of my top sentai. I has a solid plot and it was handled splendidly in most parts. It just gets better as the episodes goes.

The title of shinken red is passed down through the shiba clan lineage. Takeru isn’t old he’s just the current and youngest head of the clan
You’re both in for a treat!
Shinkenger is my top 6 favourite sentai. U guys should watch gokaiger as well it’s my favourite sentai of all time.

Trivia: GARO actually inspired some elements of Shinkenger
How I love that the zords are pieces of origami

The original subtitles were “The samurai sentai issued by providence”
