    There were loads of boats moored up down there, so I guess they did not wish to be the star of your video and only the brave attempted to move away from their mooring!😂 Those ducks at Ludham always make me smile as they just bop about on the water not bothered by all the boating activity. Have a great week and hugs to Mills!

    Fending off with the boat hook is a no no, should only be used for hooking some thing out of the water!

    This looks pretty hectic to me as a sailor. And, yeah, who is wearing a lifejacket? A nice relaxing holiday afloat?
    Like driving around spaghetti junction and all the cars are being driven by squirrels.

    A great video Johnny, however, it is no wonder that so many private boats are now avoiding many areas on the Northern Broads. I am also amased at how few people, in quite hairy conditions, have just dumped their buoyancy or life jackets whilst mooring or attempting to moor up - there have been a very sharp rise in incidents over the past 6 weeks since the windy period started and I would have hoped that this information was being passed to hirers and a little more care taken with handovers to help them understand handling in such challenging conditions.

    It doesn't help when numpties sit on water points. Get your water and go. It is not for general mooring and then going off to the shop. I looked Ultimate Gem up and it can sleep 10 , crumbs that would be enough. Love it when you hear the ducks, they sound as if they are having a good old laugh.

    Hi Jonny, thank you for another great video. I would definitely hire one of the smaller ones and then take it somewhere quite for a while and practice until I was reasonably confident. Life jackets? Necessary when mooring I think as things can go wrong. Some of these larger boats probably don’t handle too well. A long time ago we hired a houseboat on the Hawkesbury river near Sydney and it handled like a truck. Years later when I bought my twenty four foot yacht I found that I could turn it very quickly as it had a short keel. And yes, steering from the stern would be preferable to being at the bow, the downside was that the sails sometimes got in the way.

      @andrewkenny4633 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I see no one wears lifejackets first thing you put on is your lifejacket before getting on the boat.
      Those boats have too much wind agenda very little grip on the water and how much practice do they get is the next question.

  • @nicholasbell9017
    @nicholasbell9017 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I notice that the crews of the two sailing boats are the only ones wearing lifejackets.

    Tubberware decorated like Christmas trees with all the fenders. From 07:45 it would break your heart seeing charter boats helmed like this as folks attempt to steer like cars. A spring line stern out and away rather than things bumping and banging. Breaks your heart to see sterns bang off quay because of car steering mentality. Do these clients not get any basic training. Treat a single engine cruiser like a combine harvester, steer from the rear.

    • @lovelifeloveboat
      @lovelifeloveboat 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Obviously not local hirers as we all have combine harvesters! lol!

    • @oceanfroggie
      @oceanfroggie 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lovelifeloveboatYes indeed, its not rocket science rudder can move the stern only not the bow. Those single engine rentals have barn door sized rudders so intelligent use of thrust vectoring can get a single engine boat into the smallest spaces. Add a bow thruster and its difficult to get it wrong. Use a spring line to get on jetty against the wind or off against the wind by pivoting the stern out is really kind of basic helmsmanship. Our 9yo son could moor a 50ft boat with controlled precision and no bumping.

      @@oceanfroggie Sadly the handovers commonly last about 15 to 20 mins, they get referred to a manual or videos, regarding handling that many never watch - often people over-state their competence and the common line is 'it is as easy as driving a car'. It is sad as people pay an awful lot of money for a weeks hire.

    I have a boat at Brundall Gardens Marina and this past week went onto the river when the breeze wasn't too bad . However , on my return , having lined up at the narrow entrance to the moorings , my boat was moved a full width by a gust of wind . in order to eventually enter the marina it was necessary to put on some power and then go into reverse . Even with some experience on the Broads I avoid windy days but what if you have hired a boat months earlier ?

    I haven't been on the broads for a very long time but it seems to me that the boats are on average much bigger than they used to be? Perhaps that's the problem, if you're a novice you have to take one of these smaller ones. You can collect your oars over there lol

      I have no real data but I would say you are right. People want more living space inside and that means bigger boats. But then again, compare the first VW Golf model with the current one, or the old Mini Cooper with the new Mini. And sure, smaller boats are easier to handle when you're a novice.
