  • Canon R6 Mark II Final Review - 60 days later, was it worth the upgrade?
    I’ve had the R6 Mark II for over 60 days now and have had a chance to put it through its paces in both photo and video. In this video I reflect on whether the upgrade was worth it from the R6 I already loved.

    Great video! In my use case, I felt kinda bad that I missed the Mark 2 release by a few months when I switched from M4/3 last year. I currently have the R6 with the Ninja V ecosystem to supplement its video capabilities(no overheating for me @4K 24fps so far). I'm still on the fence about upgrading tbh because of two things: (1)IPB codec and the (2)micro-HDMI, as these somehow affects the overall video workflow. In fairness, I do love the idea of no time limit on videos and the assurance of no overheating at 24fps.

    I upgrade from Canon 1Dx’s to the R6II for shooting sports. There is a huge jump in AF accuracy and shooting 40 fps is amazing. All my old lens have upgraded AF. The only thing I find as a negative is the joystick on the battery grip. I mostly shoot vertical photos. The placement of the joystick is to low on the battery grip. I uncomfortably have to stretch to reach it. I have large hands I can only imagine how the experience is for people with smaller hand. Otherwise it works perfectly. I bought it instead of the R3 because I’m holding out for a used R3 and a new R1.

    Great review, James! Being more focused on video, I decided to upgrade from Mk I to Mk II for obvious reasons... but then Lumix came with the S5 mark II and I was thinking of switching. Now listening to you, the one who used all three cameras, and other reviewers as well, I'm glad that I didn't rush the switch. I'm overall happy with it but there are still annoyances that you mentioned when connecting it to an external monitor and the micro HDMI connector.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for watching Alex! The external monitor is absolutely my biggest gripe. Seems like such an unnecessary flaw. The S5II is great but the Canon is just a lot more refined and nicer to use in my opinion. For my workflow I’ll take the uncropped 50p also.

      For the other commenter, you need the Canon EF to RF Adapter to use your EF lenses (there are 3 models of adapter, depending your needs or like)

    I’ve upgraded recently from R6 and I agree with all the things you mentioned. R6MII is so convienient to use. I very much appreciate the upgraded Q menu and better button customization. I didn’t know R5 doesn’t have this limitation with external monitor. Hope Canon will resolve this with firmware update, it’s very annoying.

    I’m a sports photographer, I mainly bought it because of the 40fps and the AF. I was shooting with 1Dx’s before. It has dramatically improved the AF of my old EF lenses. I’m looking to get a used R3 at some point and the R1 if it come with high frames rates. Not interested in the video functions as a top must have.

    I didn't upgrade from the R6 but I did upgrade from the 5D Mark iii. What a world of difference! Diving into all your videos now. My main issue so far is its has completely stopped working on my in the middle of shooting a session...twice. Only thing that got the camera back on was taking the battery in and out. Ever have this happen? Brand new batter and most up to date firmware. So I don't know what happened exactly.

    3:24 - Holy SMOKES! The colour grading, lighting, and softness of that shot is incredible! It looks like it came from a much more expensive cinema camera - well done! The only thing I love more than your videos is my own R6 Mark II that I bought in December right after release. It's the best camera I've ever used in 18 years as a pro (and I used some of the best).
    Your videos sold me on the R6 when you posted the raw files vs the R5 and I upscaled them in Adobe Camera Raw and found little/no real world difference at 45 MP vs the R5 files... and when needed if I used the ACR "Enhance" feature the R6 files actually looked more detailed at 45 MP than the R5 files. Now with the R6 Mark II the result is even better and I (and others) do wonder if the AA filter is improved over the original R6.
    PS. I wonder if there is a way to soften highlight rolloff in the highlights for Clog3 footage? I've created a pre-LUT to "expand" dynamic range and you apply it to a node prior to grading a look or adding a look LUT. It's similar to the Phantom LUT WDR pre-Lut. It really does help soften highlights though again, that clip you showed looked amazing. And the C70 vs R6 II comparison actually was really close in my opinion.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much DRIS! You can certainly do a lot to soften the highlight roll off, I'm pretty happy with the look I get with CLOG 3 and in general find it really easy to work with in comparison to other camera's log profiles. The only real difference to the C70 is the transition to the blown out highlights being a little more pleasing and gradual on the C70 but in the real world all these differences are so minor. Truly an awesome video camera, just wish it didn't have the external monitor issue!

    The R6 ii looks like the best camera in its price bracket to my eyes. I did however just sell my R6 + R and just bought the R5. As I got into birding over the last years, I just felt that 20MP weren’t enough for cropping and I finally wanted to enjoy some 4K/120fps footage. I feel like I might regret not waiting for the R5 ii, but who knows when it might come out and I fear it will be quite a bit more expensive. Also my R6 and R were already loosing its value quite quickly.

    • @PunjabiGymBeats
      @PunjabiGymBeats ปีที่แล้ว +1

      R5 is still the best and 45mp is still ahead from most camera's , I sold my Canon eos R too and will upgrade to R5 for sure because R5 built quality is much better than R6 and resolution is enough for couple more years.

    I know this video is a bit older but I did upgrade from the R6 to the R6MII. While I am *mostly* a hobbyist - I do second shoot for a sports (CrossFit) photographer for hire (I don't do video). I agree that the dynamic range and color of the R6MII is a noticeable improvement. While I loved my original R6 - I did find that the autofocus was disappointing with fast moving subjects despite the options of "case" scenarios to choose from. While easily worked around with the touch/drag feature - that split second could mean a missed shot; in upgrading to the R6MII - I was stunned at how appreciable the difference in autofocus, tracking, sticky-ness of the eye AF was over the original. Further - I felt like it picked up subjects at a greater distance than the original. I could have happily survived with the original R6 (although the odd colors did frustrate me) but given a particular personal challenge at the time of the R6MII release - I decided to treat myself and traded the R6 in for the upgraded MII - totally happy I did... the outlay of money was totally worth it to me.

    The screen blackout on the R6 can be disabled. I imagine it can be done on the Mark 2 aswell. What I would like to know is if I can record internally while outputting clean HDMI. That is an issue for me with the original R6 because I have done some jobs where I stream to a big screen for a live audience. I would like to still have internal recording. Have you tested that?

    I have the R6. R6 mk2 looks amazing but I'll wait for R5 mk2 if that ever comes out. I would like that high res sensor. Feels kinda sad that 20mp is the highest I've had on a camera. Still good enough for amazing photos but cropping is so limited.
    Hopefully they can sort out that stabilization wobble. Even just being able to turn it off easily, only using lens stabilization would be an ok workaround for me. That being said I dont shoot videos often.

    Great video! I have been using the EOS R since release (2018), and it replaced my 1DX, lol. But, the lag time from taking a photo vs. seeing it in the EVF has been getting annoying for me (ever since I saw how fast it was on the R5). So, I am wondering if the R6 II is like that, or is it just as fast as the R5? Honestly, I prefer the smaller MP of the R6 line, I also prefer x2 SD card slots, so for me I think this is the best option to upgrade. Just want a faster "experience" from AF to shutter press, to seeing the results in the EVF.

    Great video reviewing the R6II.
    I do wonder how wide you would recommend going as a max with Ibis turned on and shooting video.
    We currently shoot on the R which has no ibis and always shoot using Gimbal. Even though that should be enough we always like to use lens IS in combo with the Gimbal. As I understand the Lens IS is only available if IBIS is turned on as wel. So how bad would the wobble be doing to 16-20mm’s on gimbal with IBIS. Or would you recommend turning if of when going wide on gimbal.

      @@JamesReader thank you so much for your answer. The R8 is also full frame. I like the idea of getting the R8 instead of the R. I have had a few situations where the clients asked for a cropped version of the image, not planned, and I wished I had more pixels to work with. Although 24mp (R8) to 30mp (R) wouldn't make a huge difference. Just one more question, so if I get the R8 instead of the R6 II, would I be missing a lot in terms of just photography? @@wastedtalentusa I'm currently debating between R6 ii and the R5 for an upgrade from my EOS R. The R takes great photos, but does so slowly and has no IBIS. I think having the focus tracking and speed of the newer cameras will be a huge plus for photography. I'd probably go R over R8 if I was wanting to spend less than the R6ii/R5. Two weeks ago I bought the R6 MKII and sold my R6 & EOS R to MPB. I agree with all the points you have made in this video but would add the following
    Plus side - Longer battery life is a hidden benefit and a welcome one. Being able to change the eye for me in studio use has been a bonus. Better Bluetooth and better wi-fi.
    On the fence - Still not sure I like the change to the on/off position and using the R5 & R6 MKII on the same stills shoot I keep turning the camera to video on the R6 MKII. Yes over time this will change but right now it’s annoying.
    Minus side - I don’t like the change when shooting with strobes in the studio. I used to turn off the expo.Simulation so the screen didn’t go black (it had enable, during stopping down, disable). Now it’s called Display Simulation with the following options, Exposure + DOF, Exposure, Exposure only during DOF. When using it in Exposure the screen goes black until you wake up the camera pushing the focus mode (dual back button in my case). It’s bloody annoying to say the least.

    Canon RF lenses are for professionals and for money makers on photography. For enthusiats like me, I would like to capture memories and nature shots and can't invest that much amount on canon. So went for sony A7iv and Sigma lens.

    They forgot to put a little fan in it.. No one is game enough to say it! -- What's the point of an "Upgrade" if they can't address the one problem that ruins your important video shoots? Non of the Panasonic cameras ever overheat.. they put a $2 dollar fan in it see S5ii which is also cheaper and has 30 more features (incl. sensor shift 96-mpixel photos). this is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Otherwise, your short-grab videos are perfect.

      Thanks for watching Rob! I've had the S5II for a few weeks now, the fan design on it is brilliant (presuming it's not going to compromise weather sealing). I agree with you, for video first shooters I would go S5 II if I was looking for a camera system to invest in. I prefer Canon for photos though.

    You don't think the R6 Mark 2 is a worthy upgrade from the original R? Wow. You might have just saved me a ton of money. Lots of other reviews say it's a major improvement for photo and video.

      For video yes it’s a good upgrade, for photo I would stick with the R!

    Great review! I sold my R6 because of the lack of 3rd party lenses. Until that changes i wont be selling my kidney for RF Glass! Especially with the current line up and zoom options, when Tamron, Sigma and Sony are creating amazing zoom options, especially for us event photographers, im basically using two Sony bodies with the Tamron zooms 20-40mm f2.8 & 35-150mm f2-2.8 this also cost me half the price as Canon

    Potential Dealbreaker Warning !!!!
    R6 MKII - Card Recording not supported with clean HDMI out :(
    Canon has done it again.
    removed a basic feature that existed for 15 years since in the 5D MKIII that (with MagicLantern) that seems to be still the only Canon camera that can Livestream and Record internally (as backup) a long video session like the full day conference that im streaming at the moment without stopping every 29:59.
    i havnt checked the R7 R10 R50 R3 R8 yet, but i have the feeling that this is the case on most if not all new - continuously recording canon hybrid cameras.
    i am completely bewildered by this move and very dissapointed to say the least. I am giving up on the hope for a proper all rounder from canon at this point. just don't trust them anymore.
    im also quite surprised that nowhere is this mentioned in all the many reviews praising this camera. maybe no one streams multicam with Canon cameras, but if you are - be aware.
