  • The Alfa Romeo SZ, affectionately known as the "Il Mostro" (The Monster), is a strikingly unique sports coupe that debuted in 1989 as a limited-production collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Zagato. Designed as a halo car to showcase Alfa Romeo’s engineering and design prowess, the SZ (Sprint Zagato) combined avant-garde styling with cutting-edge performance for its time. Only 1,036 units were produced, making it a rare and coveted piece of automotive history.
Under the hood, the SZ featured Alfa Romeo’s revered 3.0-liter V6 engine, known for its distinctive growl and smooth delivery. This naturally aspirated "Busso" V6 produced 210 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car's performance was further enhanced by its lightweight construction, with extensive use of composite materials for the body panels. With a top speed of around 245 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 7 seconds, the SZ delivered respectable performance, especially considering its focus on handling and driver engagement.
The chassis was derived from the Alfa Romeo 75, featuring advanced suspension tuned by Fiat’s AutoDelta racing division. This setup included Koni adjustable dampers and rear-mounted transaxle for near-perfect weight distribution. The SZ earned acclaim for its razor-sharp handling and exceptional grip, capable of pulling over 1.4g on corners-a testament to its engineering excellence. Despite its nickname, the car's aerodynamics and stability at high speeds were impressive, showcasing its balance of form and function.
The SZ's design remains polarizing, with its bold, angular lines and unconventional proportions dividing opinion even decades later. The front-end features narrow, triple headlights housed in a deep grille, while the sharply raked rear and integrated spoiler emphasize its aggressive character. Inside, the cabin is minimalist but driver-focused, with supportive leather seats and essential controls arranged ergonomically. Its exclusivity, paired with its distinct personality, ensures its status as an icon of automotive design.
The Alfa Romeo SZ is celebrated today not only for its rarity and performance but also for its daring approach to design and engineering. It represents a bold statement from an era when Alfa Romeo embraced its identity as a manufacturer of passionate and unconventional sports cars.
