  • There's only a handful of games I could genuinely say that influenced my life and Patapon is one of them. In honor of such an imaginative series, I'd like to take a look back on where it all began, where it's been and where it is now. This is a Patapon Retrospective!

    21:50 - Patapon 2

    I was intrigued when you said at 7:27 that Rolitoland was mostly lost media. I'm part of flashpoint archive, a flash games/animations archival community. I scoured through the internet archive and found some of the animations you mentioned as lost. I've compiled everything I could find here: th-cam.com/video/mAOTApQXj24/w-d-xo.html

    I've always loved their use of the self fulfilling prophecy motif with zigotons. Their prophecy says patapons will cause destruction when they reach earthend, and so they try to stop them, which causes patapons to cause the destruction. Had they not tried to stop them, patapons wouldn't cause any destruction to zigotons. I think that's quite neat :>

    I've played and been a Patapon Fan ever since i was 7, but growing up in a poor family i could never afford to play these games as a child, so i would stick to what little gameplay there was on youtube to watch, sometimes just putting videos and re-watching them so much to the point of me memorizing what actions the person took and pretend to play the game myself! All i had access too were those flash games you'd find on websites where after defeating the 3rd level, you'd unlock a wallpaper creator, and that was the most fun i'd had! Even without having access to the game, i learned everything about it, strategies, bosses, music, characters, lore etc. And it always was devastating to not be able to share or talk about this game with people my age because of most of them being into more serious or edgy games, so they would instantly say "That's a dumb game" or "Un-fun 2D Game." Years later, when i learned that i could emulate the psp on mobile and on computer, i was in awe, and lost my mind about finally being able to play the game i had followed for so many years. The hours i've spent in Patapon 2 & 3 are insane, over 1000 hours on my current P3 Gamefile and well over 3k on my Patapon 2 game, i sincerely hold this franchise close to my heart and always will, and i'm glad to have seen someone make such a well edited and dedicated video about this awesome title. And i'm glad to see some more people become interested in the game as time goes by (And i did just like you said in the video, i too recommend people trying the 2nd game to get them into the game back in the day lol). I will never NOT stop saying this is the best game of all time. A Patapon Fan for life!

    One thing I noticed between watching clips of 1+2 and 3 was the unbelievable amount of power creep. You were lucky to deal a few hundred damage per hit in the first two games, even with the best equipment. By the post-game of 3, you could deal damage in the mid SIX digits, and high-level bosses could be taken out in seconds once you get Fever mode.

    God, isn't this a blast from the past. I remember when I first got into Patapon back in middle school because my best friend at the time was obsessed with it and would never stop talking about it. He eventually got me to get the series and I was hooked for years; even had my username for most sites referencing my main, Cannogabang. We were always playing 3 together with others through a now-dead chatroom called Pataponzoo. Even participated in challenge runs like Gheek Dongora with 4 Oohoroc's or Craggy Monsters with 4 Destrobo's. Good times.

    Patapon will always be my #1 game ever. I found the game by complete accident as a young kid. My step brother had found a PSP while on a construction site but it was to badly damaged and didnt work. it still had a game inside and he knew I had a PSP myself. So next time i visited him he gave me the game. That game being Patapon. I never heard of it and it didnt really look that interesting but i gave it a shot. The music was the first thing that got me hooked. I would play dancing to the beats as I played in my room with headphones and sing along to keep rhythm. It became the only game i really played on my PSP, and then i found out it had 2 other games and i went straight to GameStop to pick them. I still listen to the soundtrack when i workout since it always fills me up with motivation and good memories

    Patapon was probably one of the most pivotal games when it came to my formative years. I had initially picked it up and was instantly hooked from when I was merely 6 or 7. Fast forward to the age of 17 and I found myself finally able to replay the 2nd and 3rd Patapon games through a pc emulator, and in doing so helped create a more “mature” perspective of the game that I developed alongside the nostalgia I had for the series. I look forward to its spiritual successor and what it has in store. Heck, I may try and find an emulator of the first game, replay the whole trilogy, then play project jabberwocky to really get the most out of this beloved rhythm series.

    I find it pretty humorous that the first half of all the patapon unit names are just taken from japanese.

    I just found this video and felt super happy seeing so many people liked these games too. I had played all 3 of these games. Patapon 2 was my favorite one, the minigames, the levels, the new rarepons, the added classes and the heropon masks was super cool and I remember building a powerful army with divine/demon weapons to take on the harder versions of the bosses.
    I did like the cooler looking Uberhero’s and them having different cries of battle when you activate the hero mode in 3 but I really wish they kept having an army of patapon as yeah, the 3 patapon were pretty weak and I had to rely on my Uberhero alone and when they went down it was basically over. Eventually I powered my default Yaripon enough to to throw three spears and strike lightning to hit crits to just hit max damage and kill most these things in a couple hero mode throws. It was satisfying but took a LONG time compared to patapon 2.

It hit the perfect balance between the two to the point of being one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences i ever seen alongside Locoroco 2 (made by same developers btw, more devs should take note from both imo). Patapon 1 is a good first try experiment but it can be a bit clunky and unnecesarily frustrating at times and 3 is so unbalanced and too much strange decisions that i think is one of my most hated games, as unpopular it can sound. I respect personal opinions though, and i really liked the retrospective. 1 hour well spend 👍

    @manoflead643 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the awful grinds for class skills or grass grinding in patapon 3. Especially class skills, since grass grinding can at least be avoided with multiplayer.
    Maxing Taterazay's shield skill for example, requires you to do 7667 perfect defense commands while running the class. That is, at bare minimum, almost nine hours of chaka chaka song. Not the fastest or slowest grind in the game - fastest goes to Kibadda while slowest is either Grenburr or Oohoroc - but that's still way waaaay too much.

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I lightly grazed the topic during the explanation of the other two weapon classes starting at level 1 when unlocked - but in my eyes they aren't mandatory for progression through the main story. Grass grinding is clearly not an intended strat by the devs, it's just a happy accident. There's no real sense in grinding past level 32 unless you're playing competitively.
      But yes, they are insane lol

    • @manoflead643
      @manoflead643 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the most part, I'd happily agree that class skills aren't necessary, honestly. Yarida's multi-spears will be unlocked anyway by playing, and so on and so forth.
      The issues come from two things.
      First and foremost, when you decide to try out new classes. Sure, if you've been levelling purely on Yarida for most of the game, you'll have the multi-spears skill levelled pretty good - but switch to Oohoroc, and even once it's levelled it'll be completely useless because it relies on its class skills to do anything. Vice versa if you switch to Yarida.
      Second is classes that rely on another class's class skill. Nobody will ever play the game through on Charibassa, as an extreme example. Even as a less extreme one, Cannassault without being boosted 8 levels by Pyokorider's class skill will be rather... limp.
      No singleplayer playthrough is going to realistically take long enough for someone to actually grind out many of the class skills; nobody is going into the last dungeon with their Grenburr rocking the full set of status immunities while attacking and getting to Zapper 5, let alone maxing it. It's like the class skill system was designed to make people grind for excessively long times, just to stomp pvp

    Good lord what a great video this is, I also grew up attached to the patapon games, and still find myself pleasantly surprised every time I meet someone who knows the franchise; I had no idea about project Jabberwocky! I've been itching for some new patapon-esque adventure for a while. Thanks for making such a great video on the series and everything around it!

      Thanks for watching! It's always great to know people are becoming informed about Jabberwocky through my efforts, it was definitely important to me to spread the word so I'm glad it's paying off!

    This video brings back a lot of good memories for me, I have so much nostalgia for the PSP and Patapon in particular. I was never really a console player, never had a playstation or xbox, but I saw an advertisement for Patapon when my parents took me on vacation in Paris. I could not read french, I didn't know what the game was about, and I had never seen a PSP in my life, but I spent the next year begging them so that I could get a PSP on my birthday to play it with. Patapon 1 and 2 were my favourites but I also had the Loco Roco games, me and my younger brother have so many hours in Patapon and I can't imagine what my life would have been without the appreciation for music and rhythm that it gave me (not to mention how great the games themselves were). Thank you for this retrospective

      That's really interesting, it makes sense considering France is Rolito's homeland - I would of loved to see what kind of advertising efforts were made for Patapon there, do you remember any specifics?

      It was over a decade ago so the memory is fuzzy sadly, all I can remember is that it was a flyer glued to a pillar that had a lot of advertisements on it

    I searched for a video like this like 3 years ago, didn't find ANY and I was a little disappointed because it was strange that a game like this hadn't any good review, retrospective or generally a good video. Bless u for making me relive a memory so deep in me! Locoroco next that's a fantastic game too :)

      There's a few now, I'm definitely not the first one to cover the games like this but thanks for watching! I would love to talk about LocoRoco someday.
