  • Today on "365 Days of Plants" I'll be discussing Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant) care. This particular plant falls into my "easy houseplants for beginners" category, because as we'll go over, it's easy to care for, can survive a wide range of conditions-including soil and light conditions, and can thrive with a little benign neglect too. A perfect plant for a houseplant novice!
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

You can plant a ZZ in cat litter with a candle for light and it might grow. 😹🕯 I just got my Black ZZ! I hug it daily😊

I've had my ZZ for more than ten years. They can survive on neglect but they actually need some care to thrive. They love bright light though not direct sunlight for a long time and because they are native from African rainforest, they have a dry season and a rainy season, so we need to pay attention to the growing season and water well during this time. When the foliage is drooping it's because they lack water or sunshine, they normally grow upwards. They like to be pot bound and watch out for root rot because they take a long time to propagate so you won't like it when your ZZ is just about to die and you take it out of the pot to see all those rotten roots. So pot it in a very well draining mix like cactus mix or something like that.

Love ZZ plants and love your videos. ZZ plants are so easy to propagate, for me. My old roommate had one for years and neglected it, to my horror, for years. I finally stole it and re-potted it and it is doing wonderfully. Much of the re-potting was cuttings directly into moist soil and is kept moist while propagating. Thanks, Summer!

    I've had 2 medium zz's for a little less than a year. I left them in their nursery pots and put them in cachepots.I was really excited when they both shot new stems up this spring, but I accidentally left one sitting in a bit of water after watering!!! D;
1 or 2 nights after watering, I noticed its new growth yellowing! Found the tiny bit of water. Checked the roots and there was a already a tiny bit of root rot! I immediately snipped the rot off and left the root ball out, open to air for a few hours. It seems to be ok now aside from the new growth dying, but I 100% learned to put rocks underneath the pot to avoid it sitting in any excess water! So easy-going, yet so very sensitive! It was a scary few days! lol
Wasn't initially very attracted to the ZZ, but it has grown on me! :)

ZZs are great beginner plants. They are so easy, and thrive on some neglect. I have a nice, large one.. and maybe I water once a month. It gets some filtered morning sun, and have grow lights, too. It's doing great. They are easy to find.. Home Depot, Walmart or Lowes usually have them.

I'm loving these series, Summer! I'd like to see though, for you to point out exactly what went wrong with the plants when they have either brown tips or yellow tips or whole yellow leaves, etc. I know you mentioned in one of the last videos with your Agleonema that you had some brown tips but didn't say why. Also your ZZ had a few yellow & brown looking leaves...I would have loved to know what you think might have gone wrong in your care that may have caused that. It would truly help viewers to identify their own situation & potentially correct issues :) Otherwise, keep the videos coming...they're so good! Thanks! 💚💚💚

I also have a zz plant that size. I have watched some other videos and realized my plant does not look as well as it could! The drooping leaves are from not enough sunlight, and the yellowing is from not enough drainage and/or too much watering. Watering once or twice a month should be sufficient.
    Thanks for your video!

Got my zz plant repot just a month ago..its growing like crazy but now some of the leaves turns yellow..i put it near filtered window on the floor..is it because i water it too much? I got a schedule for watering my plants but my mum insisted that I should water them few times a week..if not, she will..so I thought maybe it's overwatering? Should i repot to a bigger pot @ just new soil @ let it dry out in his pot? The new growth got taller than the old one too..tq

    *That poor, wounded frond!*
I suggest cutting it below the lowest leaflet and start new babies!
You mentioned propagating by leaves but that may be unclear when dealing with a pinnately divided leaf. Amazingly, each leaflet will become a whole new plant, given good care over most of a year. This is a good time of year to start in the Northern Hemisphere.
    Other videos show several methods.

Is this a plant that you can cut back to keep small? I see them, and I am afraid it would get too large for the center of a 3x3 feet table in a large room that has a large NE facing window about 14 feet from where I would like it (rest of area is all walls). Also, can you pinch back peperomias to keep small/moderate bushy? I am good at growing things, but because of window locations in home I end up giving away (too dark), and sticking to my outdoor herb and salad garden. I do have a couple of nice sanseveria and pilea peperominoide (sorry if spelled wrong) in this area, but I would like something a little bushy/leafy for accent.

Help! Can someone help with troubleshooting this? I got a pretty big ZZ plant this fall. It's in a good size pot with enough room, the pot has drainage and it also has a layer of leca at the bottom. It's in a corner of my room but facing a window on the opposite end of the room, so it gets low to moderate light and no direct sun. I've been watering it about every six weeks, letting it dry out in between and watering until water starts to seep into the saucer underneath! BUT, it's kind of turning yellow and wilting on me? It doesn't have any bugs. Help!!

Dear summer rayne, this might not ring a bell to you. But I want you to consider. Cause I watch all ur videos, they are beautiful you explore so many rare and different varieties of plants. And you have a very large collection. But dear, the thing that goes in my mind is most of ur plants don't look healthy, cause you can't take care of 700+plants at the very same time. Its not possible. And you have decided to add even more. Its fine. But dont kill them, when you bring a new plant it completely becomes ur responsibility. Ur motto should be keeping all of ur plants healthy and beautiful

You know, by using the word "dear," you went from an understandable difference of opinion to being a passive aggressive criticizer. You never use "dear" when addressing ANYONE. It is demeaning and unless used by a relative or loved one, it is always meant to be so.
Same with "honey" or "darling:" all are used when talking DOWN to someone.

I have more than 5 pots of ZZ and I alternatively displaying it inside my house for 3 days each pot the rest of the day all stay outside the house to keep it straight up and have thick body each fronds. And I used mix of crushed pot around an inch square something and some organic soil, they grow fatter and healthier.
