Really enjoyed this video. It definitely offers good insight on the context of the letters. Would be cool if some context/ info on how the Thessalonicans (spelling?) worshipped the Roman politicians/emperor and how it caused the Christians to seem subversive etc.

As for the practice of Emperor worship in Thessalonica, it does seem to have been practiced to some degree, though as far as I can tell it does not seem to play much of a role in the life of the average Thessalonian at this time. There were other gods/goddesses that played a bigger role in shaping daily life in Thessalonica at that time, such as Dionysos, Zeus, and other Greek deities.
The Greek worldview seems to lie at the heart of what Paul is addressing in these letters. Of course, these letters only give a small glimpse into the struggles of the early Christians in Thessalonica, and surely they endured social difficulties as well due to their Christian beliefs keeping them from engaging in the cultic practices of the day.

@@TheBibleEffect Great response and like I sad the video is really educational but I wanted to give a little push back.
From what I can tell many thessolonicans may have had images/ small altars of the emporer in their own homes and likely prayed for his peace/ prosperity on a daily basis. To me it almost seems reminiscent of how North Koreans "honor" (read: worship) their current leader.
Further, it seems as though emporer worship was in fact regarded as a civic duty at times. Needless, this would /could create a schism between the average Thessalonican and Christian during that time.
I'm not suggesting that your video isn't comprehensive I'm just looking for more info.
@@ModernMozart1104 Thank you for your comment! Yes, the pressures of social conformity to uphold what were thought of as civic duties would have been difficult to navigate for many early Christians. Though we may not have emperor worship today, we can draw a lot of parallels to these same pressures of conformity on us. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment!

May I know what are the resource you can look for for the historical context you mentioned? Most Bible encyclopedia doesn't include that piece of historic background
This is a great question, and I'm very glad that you asked. We do try to source our information from a number of reputable commentaries, Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well as resources and scholarly articles that go into the historical and cultural settings of the time and place. When we can, we also reference primary resources as well. For this particular video, we used commentaries and resources written by: Leon Morris, Colin G. Kruse, Craig S. Keener, J. W. Simpson Jr., D. J. Tidball, M. C. Tenney, and Albert Barnes. We also used historical works such as the Didache and the Odyssey as well. After we source and compile our resources and write script, we then submit it to scholars in the fields of Biblical studies and Greco-Roman history for evaluation and review. We make any necessary edits and changes at that point, and then from there our script goes into video production. If you would like to find out anything more specific as to where we referenced certain material, you can always email me directly and I am happy to direct you to the exact source where we referenced any specific piece of information. Thank you for your question. I'm not sure that I understand specifically what you are referencing regarding Paul sending Timothy back. Are you referring to Paul leaving Timothy behind in Ephesus? If that is the case, this is found in 1 Timothy 1:3 and 3:14-15. Please let me know if this does not answer your question. Blessings!

@@biblenoter I understand, you are referring to Paul's time in Thessalonica, described in Acts 17. From the Acts account we do know that Timothy was with Paul and Silas in Thessalonica, but there is no mention about their whereabouts during the riot. In fact, the people seem upset with Paul and Silas, while Timothy does not seem to be a target (possibly because he was young, and/or not very public yet in ministry). They do leave to go to Berea afterwards, and then Paul goes on to Athens, but Timothy's time is not described at all in the account. But as you mentioned, we never see Paul sending Timothy back to face the angry mob. Blessings!
