Eseercam It was documented that MIchael wasn’t going to do this video. He helped set everything up but gagged them the day of shooting. He agreed to do the Victory album and the subsequent tour, but that was the extent of what he was willing to do - aka no music videos. And those two things he agreed to were the result of his Mother Katherine begging him to do the Victory tour for the family. Jermaine reportedly refused to participate in the video because of Michael’s absence (he wasn’t going to be made to feel inferior by his little brother). Michael at that point was the King of Pop Music and Culture in Summer of 1984. Thriller’s sales were still going through the stratosphere after a year and a half (released November 30, 1982) and he didn’t need the money. A punk rocker on some retro show said even punk and metal kids purchased copies of Thriller. His crossover appeal was like nothing the industry had ever seen at the time. Thriller of course became the biggest selling album of all time. He was making $2 for every album sold which was unprecedented at the time for any artist. Albums were about $7-12 on average. That’s not to mention singles, investments, and endorsements (Pepsi wasn’t the only endorsement he had BTW). Michael’s was raking in $100 -$200 million a year at that point. So he was good. He even donated his payment for the Victory Tour to charity which is another unprecedented move as artist make the bulk of their money from touring - and that was the biggest tour ever. So he was secure to say the least.
