At the last boss of the last DLC of the last Souls game, at the end of the last Age of Fire, the last two undead of an ashen wasteland fought for the last and most ancient of artifacts. This is their song. It ends in fire and blood, in lighting, rust and dunes of ash, stretching to the infinite horizon. The Souls series ended not with a whisper, or a breeze, or a windstorm. It ended in a Gael.
You and some others inspired me to compile a sort of poem: At the end of the final Age of Fire, the last two undead of an ashen wasteland fight for the last and most ancient of the artifacts. This is their song. At the end of time the ancient dragons have fallen alongside the gods who slew them. The once great lords are nought but cinder - their heirs only maddened beasts. The world is left but ash and ruins. One of dark, only fit for cannon fodder, mad with the power the very gods feared. The other of ash, not fit to even be cinder, wielding the strength that toppled the gods themselves. Both unyielding in their purpose. Both destined to break the shackles the gods placed upon them. Two nobodies, fighting over nothing, in the middle of nowhere: a battle no one will remember, for a cause long forgotten. One last time Fire will do battle with the Dark, at the end of the world. It is the end of the final Age of Fire. The last two undead of an ashen wasteland fight for the last and most ancient of artifacts. This is their song. It ends in fire and blood, in lighting and dust, in rust and dunes of ash, stretching across the infinite horizon. The world ends not with a feeble whisper, or a gentle breeze, or a fleeting final breath. It ends, in a Gael.
The Dark Souls series has one overarching theme; the concept of something once beautiful falling to ruin. Kingdoms are discarded and abandoned, heroes become mere commodities to fill a merchants' pockets, great mythical beings are reduced to pitiful shades of a majestic era that demands recognition. This concept is what makes the bosses in the Dark Souls series meaningful, and why some of the best fights have songs that are not blood-boiling themes that get your adrenaline flowing. Why? Because that would imply a mighty battle of two great forces. And that could not be further from the truth when it comes to Slave Knight Gael and his fight with the Ashen One. The entirety of existence, cataclysmic battles, wondrous beings and breathtaking sceneries... All are gone. The world has lived far beyond its golden years, and it is now anaemically wasting away. The miniscule remnants that remain wander to and fro. And here, at world's end, two unimportant figures scrap over the last remaining remnants of power, for meaningless reasons. This is not a glorious battle. This is a mercy killing. A song that evokes tragic beauty. And this is a pretty damn good cover of it. Nice work!
yeah, it always feels like you're late to the party, everything important has already happened, everything's crumbling and in ruins. Only time you really feel like you're in the right place at the right time is SoC. Also you're fighting a god in phase two of Gael.
A lot of people don't know this, but Lord of the Rings, arguably the godfather of modern fantasy, invoked the same theme of decadent beauty. Our heroes, either related to bigger heroes from ages past or those who worshipped them, march palace ruins and abandoned keeps and all the incredible battles and moments have already happened. It's an interesting callback and I like how we get to revisit a world with both fascinating and tragic history.

I feel the exact same way. It's far and away the best/most iconic bit of the piece for me, except for maybe the phase transition. Sorry to necropost btw lol.
@@ceilingfanenthusiast6041 Ahaha, don't worry! It's fun when you get pulled back to a comment you made 5+ years ago xD Still a great piece! Though, I can't believe the game is as old as it is... and sadly... I don't seem to enjoy Elden Ring, which is devastating. I can see why people love it and it's a great game... but... I just don't enjoy it. I mean, there's basically no music in there that I could hum either! So, that's possibly something!
Hand it over .... That sheet ..... Your cover's sheet .... For my satisfaction of playing this song Ahh . Is this the skill ? The skill of the dark souls .... (I know I'm late )

UprisingGrand Oh Midir is a grand tune, very unique for souls somehow. Haven't played BB mind you. Looking forward to moving into a house with some PS4 owners!
Gael is the reason I don't want a Dark Souls 4. I adore the fact that the ending to the whole series, right now, is 2 unimportant, nameless people fighting over what will be nothing by the end of the fight. A genuinely perfect ending, if I say so myself.
So, coming back to this months later: You've inspired me to take up the piano again. I had about 2 years under me during high school, and I was getting decent at it. Picking it up again 7 years later, and I'm a little rusty but it's coming back to me. There's no way I'll be able to play this off the rip, but I'm downloading and printing the sheet music so I can analyze it and start practicing right away. Those first few notes give me chills every time I hear them. So I'm gonna start with those and work my way up. Thank you for your work. It takes a lot to arrange music for the piano. You are amazing and I wish you all the best. -A fan
Absolutely amazing arrangement! As Akaarei said; my expectations were high my expectations were exceeded. You have a new subscriber, sir. I would love to hear this on a real piano!
Moves me to tears every time. Played with such emotion and skill, and _this arrangement_ man… I can’t even describe. 3:44 is so perfect and every note is felt. The camera work for the different phases, the subtitles… this makes me feel more _there_ than actually fighting him does. Flawless.
This gave me goosebumps, I get extremely immersive in games like dark souls 3, but this is indeed the first time I've visualized my fight with a boss as the song went on, this is amazing, thank you.
Even with all of Elden Rings undeniable achievements and amazing strides forward, I am glad that even now, Slave Knight Gael will most likely remain the most epic boss fight in the Souls saga.
The DLC was amazing, but this piano piece is the last true piece of Souls content for now. Really evokes the emotion of Gael's tragedy, and brings a close to the story of the Dark Soul. Amazing job, sir.
So many memories of flawless fighting Gael with the aqua marine dagger and the many hours of pain to memorize the fight. Love how he includes the dialog points to show that he is into the next phase of his fight.

It is refreshing for me to listen to a piano version of this ost, kinda a give me the feeling of sorrow, this is definitely a great piece of music to conclude our undead journey. "Mark my word ashen one, you will remain among the accursed"- Prince Lothric.
I love the music in this game and a piano version is just wonderfull and full of emotions... especially if you know the story behind Gael I could cry ow beatiful games in connection with music can be.
The most hardest boss i have ever faced in all of my gaming career next to midir, the nameless king and gwyn. Probably had to do with the fact i was NG +11 when they released the DLC.
UprisingGrand thank you, i almost cried when i finally defeated him and hearing you play the instrumental flushed my head with memories. Been playing the souls series since demon souls and you mastered this so well it felt like i was relieving all of those momsent all over again. Sorry if it got cheesy or corny but you have my respect praise the sun my friend
UprisingGrand I think the most satisfying fight of any non dlc ng + run has to be when you make quick work of the dancer. It took me a day to beat her on my first run, before I realized I could summon help. Then on NG plus I was determined to do all the bosses solo. I beat her on my first try and made myself a manhattan to celebrate
Noice! You captured the moment really well here! When it comes to the original track, phase 1 is the best part of the piece for me. Something about suits Gael more than the following phases. Though phase 3 feels more like it suits the setting over the previous phases. Even though it feels too epic for who Gael is as a character, it goes with the setting much better than phase 1. Then phase 2 is just a more heated version of phase 1. It's not a bad part, I think it just does what phase 3's music was doing just not quite as well. 1: Phase 1 10/10 2: Phase 3 9/10 3: Phase 2 7.5/10 Onto your recreation: You nailed the way the piece sounds, and you shifted a full orchestral piece over to a piano really well. In the same way you got the feels bang on. This gives the same vibes the og piece does. But there's something about a piano that makes a song sound more personal, and it's done wonders to pick that second phase up. Excellent work!
Ben Beal I feel like phase 2 is more representative of the ending of the world itself. It's panicked. It's epic. Lightning is in the background and the wind picks up. While phase 3 is more representative of Dark Souls as a series.
Phase 1 really gives a dark, heavy and sad vibe and set the tone of the entire fight. Phase 2 is a nice phase change, it is epic but still has the melody. Phase 3 is overly dramatic and at some point sounds messy I don't think it fits the fight really much, except the environment. It should be subtle and heavy for the entire fight like they did to Abyss Watchers OST.
Well in phase two he LITERALLY becomes a god, because the entire dark soul has gotten to work in his blood, which is equivalent to a lord soul. Idk about three though. Maybe using some Manus powers
You've done it so well. Amazing, congrats! You should really do some more from Bloodborne too. Particularly "Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower". No one has done it already >.< Keep the awesome work

Tony the Tiger I'm definitely considering transcribing some Bloodborne pieces.
...But I refuse?
God I love the violin arpeggio in the original's second and third section of the track and you did such a great job emulating it here
I listen to this and ur midir video each every day. I MUST learn these two, you are an inspiration! Keep up the good work!
Scott Maloney thank you very much
That second stage is a master along with the entire song good sir
This boss fight was one of the few that perfectly ended a series in video game history
I cry every time I listen to this song, I love it so much
I suck at piano, this actually makes me want to try more!
Eric Lana Go for it, playing piano is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
It is refreshing for me to listen to a piano version of this ost, kinda a give me the feeling of sorrow, this is definitely a great piece of music to conclude our undead journey. "Mark my word ashen one, you will remain among the accursed"- Prince Lothric.
im saving up to get the DLC's SO HYPED
3:44 is perfect
I can hear the sound of repeating crossbow shots tearing up my flesh! *ugh*
Best piece of music in the series. It really gives the feel of the culmination of all that has happened, and the end that faces you.
I love the music in this game and a piano version is just wonderfull and full of emotions... especially if you know the story behind Gael I could cry ow beatiful games in connection with music can be.
i feel like i would play this in my villain arc
The most hardest boss i have ever faced in all of my gaming career next to midir, the nameless king and gwyn. Probably had to do with the fact i was NG +11 when they released the DLC.
Congrats on NG+11. Most people couldn't get to NG+2
UprisingGrand im 6 NG+
Ahhh, the camera switchs and the light, wonderful
This Keyboard Player is *THE DARK SOULS OF THE KEYBOARD PLAYERS!*
I will comeback here every year
Because that 2nd phase sliced my heart so much
I LOVE IT
1: Phase 1 10/10
2: Phase 3 9/10
3: Phase 2 7.5/10
Onto your recreation:
You nailed the way the piece sounds, and you shifted a full orchestral piece over to a piano really well.
Phase 2 of gaels soundtrack was worth the $25 I spent on these awful DLCs
Well in phase two he LITERALLY becomes a god, because the entire dark soul has gotten to work in his blood, which is equivalent to a lord soul. Idk about three though. Maybe using some Manus powers
Jotun 'awful'? (excluding AoA)
This boss gave me one hell of a time, and one of the best boss fights in the souls series in my opinion.
fedora knight gayl: wut, still ere? hand ovr dat ting. ur dank sol. 4 m'lady's painting
Bruhh
@@szemmellaikus8992 yeah bruh
Man the chord progression is amazing in this piece.
Amazing cover, I'll try to play it and honor this poor Gael !
Absolutely amazing performance
You've done it so well. Amazing, congrats! You should really do some more from Bloodborne too. Particularly "Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower". No one has done it already >.<
Keep the awesome work
i would love that
We'll see after Midir.
I have rewatched this too many times
