Dark Souls: 219 Discoveries

- Dark Souls is a masterpiece packed with little details. I hope that I've managed to show you at least a few things that you didn't know before watching - even you veterans out there! The idea of the structure is to break the footage down into small chunks that are roughly chronological, so that by the end it's like a complete playthrough rather than a patchwork of unconnected facts.
All of the music is from the game itself and I got all of the footage from the PS4 / PC versions of the Remaster. As for the discoveries, I've tried my best to give credit where I can, and ultimately this video would have been impossible without such a great community behind it. Thank you for watching and for being a part of that community!
Given that this (and the Bloodborne one) took quite a while to make, please don't subscribe if you expect regular uploads of this sort. I wish I could, but it's just not possible! I'm not sure which game to do next, and I can't promise it'll be out anytime soon, but if you'd like to support this hobby of mine then you can send me a tip here: www.buymeacoffee.com/lakeofmud
Obviously don't feel compelled to; my content will always be free!

Developers: Patches is a liar
Patches: Good day, you look reasonably sane
So is Patches actually thinking you’re insane or that it’s a bad day?
Both and your character has to be insane to have gotten there he probably also spied you fighting ceaseless from there.
The devs got that right.

The fact that you can see different areas in the world from so far away just amazes me
The best bit is that you can see your bloodstain (which glows quite brightly) from ANY distance. Makes the world feel much more real.
Yeah I love doing that when playing ds3
Especially with Anor Londo that stretches further with 3d models than u can see
@@LakeofMud it's great, yeah. the bloodstain thing can be used to show that some distant geometry doesn't match up with real location, they used alternate renderings to save on processing of course. Sometimes the location is adjusted in order for you to see it better (such as duke's archives from the hellkite bridge. it's shown slightly bigger and a bit closer than it is, otherwise you'd barely be able to see it)
What's also cool is that for the most part, the sizes of each area don't change depending on your distance. Most are accurate in their size to the actual places.
"Female ghosts babies shoot lightning at you" is the kind of sentence that makes you wonder if your having a stroke while reading it.

It's representing that the mom statue is a bitch because he's giantdads kid too
"Kalameet's arena is Darkroot Basin" - wtf how did i not realized it?!
Yeah, the whole dlc reflects that whole area
The Royal Wood is Darkroot in the past. Take Marvelous Chester, he's been theorized to have been from Yharnam and that's why he favors a crossbow in a world without guns
yes, ds1 introduced time travelling, thats why artorias gets credited for everything you do in the past, and we got the ringed city dlc. or the memories in ds2
It's not exactly "time travel"
Time collapsed on itself
It stops going on when fire fades, so basically anything it's happening at the same time
That's why u can summon npcs, they were there before you, but because time stands still, they're at the same time still there
Ringed city it's just the consequence of everything happened colliding

I wish I had known about it earlier, time for a miracle build just to do it
The chosen undead is like "idk man throwing knife toxic just hit different"
A pure toxin on a blade directly into your blood vs a toxin that has to work through your skin and make it's way into your blood. Makes sense in the real world.
Blowdart not knife
It's less damaging if you're toxic yourself!
I think it's a metaphor for the souls community and the whole git gud phase
@@arbiter- who are you replying to?
"The bed of chaos has different floor texture if you run there from beyond Blighttown."
WTF WHY, HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN AND WHO THE HELL FIGURED SOMETHING LIKE THIS OUT, IM GOING CRAZY.
I think a decent amount of it comes from datamining, not always necessarily something people just happened to notice as they were playing the game
Textures get loaded into memory in batches, and since dark souls doesn’t have traditional load screens between areas, a lot of this is done in the background as you transition between areas, during elevators n junk where you can’t see either area directly.
So it probably doesn’t say “hey give me texture 0F382.png,” it says something more like “hey give me whatever ‘the floor texture’ of this batch is”
and since whatever flag to remove the blighttown texture from memory never got the chance to do its thing, cause you’d never be expected to run from all the way there, it gets pulled first, probably due to some item ID shenanigans
General unimportant textures may be flagged this way for efficiency. Obviously you want to make sure you’re specific when asking for the boss textures, but a dirt floor is usually just a dirt floor, so it’s not worth stressing over edge-cases like this.
@@IanZWhite00 good explanation, I agree this makes sense. But how did someone notice this small detail lmao.

22:04 I remember reading somewhere that the dung pie toxic being weaker was intentional by Miyazaki. So that one could poison themselves with a weaker toxic than the dart guys'.
Yes, he said this in an interview. Not sure anyone really plays that way because it's not a well known mechanic, but it's a clever idea!
it's such a brutally counterintuitive idea that NOBODY would notice.
@@AAAAA_BRAD it's a reference to the concept of "pharmakon"
See also poison moss in DS2 or contact medicine in Sekiro or the healing blood of Old Yharnam in Bloodborne.
@@core-nix1885 Wait, so lemme get this straight. Is a pharmakon a remedy that happens to be poisonous/harmful? If so, that's a really interesting concept.
@@AAAAA_BRAD
Preface: I don't actually know Greek, or much philosophy (so take these musings with a pinch of salt).
In this context, yes, but there's also pharmakeia meaning sorcery/pharmacy, pharmakeus meaning sorcerer/remedician and pharmakós meaning scapegoat/exile/sacrifice
I think the idea (as implemented in these games) is taken from Derrida's essay "Plato's Pharmacy", wherein he deconstructs Plato's assertion that writing is a kind of "pharmakon"
Derrida's project of "deconstruction" is tied into this idea that the West privileges speech over writing, as it privileges presence over absence (the writer/reader aren't simultaneously present whereas the speaker/listener are [or were before the advent of video but I digress])
Indeed, the whole concept of Disparity in Dark Souls is, I feel, a play on Derrida's idea of biased pairs of opposites.
"Light and dark", and "fire and dark" are just metaphors for "presence and absence".

Dark hexes are not the same as sorcery so this makes perfect sense.
@@machineelf9459 No, actually, since Vow of Silences prevents all casting, not all sorceries. Miracles, pyromancies, sorcery, and even player-casted DLC spells - it doesn't specify or exclude any of them; they all are prevented.

So many devs/studios are terrified of having you miss any little thing while this game had multiple full zones and bosses I missed my first time through. It really is amazing how much they trust the player and the player base, and yeah the insane amount of little details are just so cool.
You could really see how much Miyazaki mattered when the abomination of DS 2 came out and they thought the whole point of the game was difficulty and butchered it pretty much. Thank god 3 was given proper resources to be a good entry in the series!

And the fact that you’re actually attempting to mock and belittle me all because I said sif isn’t really sad is fucking golden.
Sif isn’t really sad. Learn to accept that.
They’re an archetypal stereotype.
The stereotype being dogs in fiction having zero personality or character being shown whimpering or limping to invoke an arbitrary response from the audience. And then having said audience irrational side with said dog attacking people for not being easily influenced to an almost ridiculous degree.
The stereotype being the cliche tactic, and the relation being your childish behaviour in reaction to said tactics.
The archetype being the dog. There is no need for effort or development. They simply need to include the dog with a sign around their neck saying “innocent” and then all that’s left is for people like you to project assumptions unto the dog. When said dog shows an extremely obvious and lazy sign of being injured or upset you are expected to find it sad.
And you being easily emotional influenced WILL find it sad. As I said taking irrational reaction to the fact and even going so far as to attack someone for not appealing to your bias. It’s almost funny if it weren’t so pathetic.
I don’t like sif. His moveset is trash, his hit boxes are trash, he’s unbelievably easy and ridiculously simple to exploit (literally just walk near him and he physically can’t reach you) and his lore is practically nonexistent bc as I said he’s literal archetypal sad character. He’s not sad and he has no personality. You’re just expected to feel sad bc they said so and the only reason artorias existed is so that he can act as some kind of fuel to make sure people like you get the idea that you’re suppose to feel sad..
But you’re predictable.. I said “not really” and I fully expected a plethora of fucking immature bullshit from some overgrown man children, and that’s exactly what I got. Go look in a mirror. Just discovered this video. Fascinating stuff. 'Drakes have exposed ribcages' Useless and brilliant both at the same time!
39:31 those stray demon's magic attacks sounds like gunshots when speeded up
They hit like gunshots too.
Dark Souls: Prepare to America
It might just be a slowed down gunshot sound effect lol
@@chyguy3776 Just like the estus sfx is a slowed down water drop.
Guys, this game is 9 years old, and we still find out surprises...
Like how the scale-searching dragon eye has the same pulsing effect as the wolf ring?
Half of these were extremely obvious though. Like that "secret path" around the undead dragon... Really? "Secret"?
@@aiellamori its like ppl «finding» secret caves, dialogues in Skyrim still even in 2021
Did I legit just watch a 70 minute video of dark souls
Did I legit make one
i know absolutely nothing about these games why did i just sit through this whole video and also thoroughly enjoy it
This game continues to be WAAAY more thorough than I ever expect EVERY single time I watch a video on it
57:23 the voices, maybe that's why Logan went mad
He should have just got some headphones
His hat muffles the sound
It could be a thing that happens in the mind of someone
Nah, he simply couldn't catch crystal lizards.
The fact that this video is out in 2020 is amazing, people (me included ofc) are crazy about how deep this game is, lorewise also. Only one thing: Ingward isn't saying is going back to New Londo but that he went in a more shadowy spot in Firelink Shrine because seeing the sun, after being in that dark place for a fuckton of time, hurts his eyes.
8:01 that's a REALLY unfortunate typo
59:00 So you need 30 INT for max soul masses, but it's ok to cast dark bead with 16 INT lmao
so DARK magic requires less intelligence? Oh no...
@@PreggoJohn Oh wow that's dark
Dark magic is not bright. Much like it's users i guess
@@PreggoJohn in order to be truly intelligent you must not fall prey to your emotions which is what dark magic runs off of

If "The Impaled Corpses Bleed" isn't a black metal song it should be.
"You can hear scream near the bonfire" well not only near in fact, i've read and remember you can hear these all around the upward part of Oolacile and it scared the shit out of me when noticed.
People speculated it had to do with the past events reflecting during the current time and i like the idea of it
8:47
Parrying the charging boar, then immediately shoving a spear up its ass... badass.
This game has the absolute best overall level design of any video game in history.
"the statues of orenstien and smough face each other" can you imagine if one of them was awkwardly looking away
Okay, I've put over a thousand hours into this game and I learned a lot of new stuff. However, there is one thing wrong that I noticed. Back flips do have hyper armor, but it's at the end of the animation, not the beginning
19:50 You call that SMALL?
in dark souls: YES
Dark souls be the real size queen.
Miyamoto
I knew about some of these, but i am still surprised me how many i didn't notice or missed.
Hands down. Not only best souls-game, but the best game ever made imo.
Nah
Some fun facts about the 1.0 vanilla:
- Skeletons, when killed drop no souls
- The action queue dupe from ptde doesn't work
- it's impossible to spawn Quelaana in ng+ or beyond if you only have an ascended flame (you need a second +10-15 flame to trigger her spawn)
- Your maximum equip burden was lower
- You could only buy homeward bones from the female undead merchant
- Grant was scaling with dex instead of strength
To name a handful of things I never see mentioned
49:52 I'm pretty sure the covenant of artorias just warps to the chest in firelink if you drop it anywhere and reload the area (because it's a required story item), doesn't have to do with snuggly.
Nah I don't think that was supposed to imply that. 'specially since he didn't point it out specifically. But I can't confirm if it disappears immediately anywhere upon quit & reload.
Lack of PC rn.
You are correct. All story related items, if dropped and save quit, will return to the Firelink chest. I came to the comments to see if someone mentioned this one lol
Yes, but doesn't Snuggly usually outright reject most items?
@@aestheticleo7507 yes, thats why its in the video.
@@aestheticleo7507 He has nothing to reject, the item disappears as soon as he quits the game.
