Might as well throw down a few tips I’ve learned from a pre college course for concept art, 1. To this college, there are 4 aspects: Environments, Architecture/vehicles, characters, and tools/weapons. It may be good to specialize in one of those categories, but maybe not. 2. Do lots of refining. The process the college showed me was references (many, like 4-10), ideation sketches, refinement, and final render. Find some ideas you like, and mash em together in different ways. Then when you find one you like, tinker around with it till you wanna finish it. 3. Other general tips like letting the viewer feel like a participant when it comes to environmental and architectural drawing, rather than someone watching from far away.
the shapecarver people do a great job at showing how the nitty gritty of ideation goes o/ they do 5 broad variations, then pick one and do 5 more variatons on that specific one, then pick one and do 5 more, sometimes mashing shapes together laterally or from previous drawings. It's a very interesting look at the process

So glad you didn't shy away from the controversy when covering the downsides to the job. I have no intention of becoming a professional artist, but your videos have been very helpful nonetheless. Thanks a bunch for all your hard work!
This comes at a great time for me as I’ve just started sending out applications for concept art jobs here in Tokyo, thanks for the advice as always Marc
Just signed up to Art School! Been subscribed for 4+ years and have always appreciated all of your videos. I never took the leap before and finally feel like its the right time. Thank you for the content Marc!! 😌
YES YES YESSS!!! Thank you for this video!! I’ve been wanting to be some sort of artist in the creative industry for all my life and watching this video has really helped me lean more towards learning how to grow as an artist and hopefully be a concept artist one day ! Have a great day man you’re the best
Thank you for this info! This is EXACTLY the info I've been looking for to know how to navigate my portfolio toward the kind of job I want! I create a lot of artwork but been a little lost as to what to really include in my portfolio. I see a lot of us are working hard to break into the industry, and many of us working (non-creative) office day jobs to pay rent/etc. But we NEED to keep going, keep drawing, keep posting our work to be more visible if we want that art career!
You probably won't ever see this, but thank you so much for your videos Marc. Your videos are fun, informative and inspiring! As an ok artist who has alot to learn I always come to your channel for advice. Hopefully one day I can actually have the willpower to finish my pieces more so I can get into this line of work.
I'm currently going to school for illustration, and even though they don't necessarily focus on concept art I still want to be a concept artist. Wish me luck! I wish everyone here luck in their art journeys wherever that may take them! It will work out in the end so don't panic. :)
my grandfather has been pushing into me to choose a college n career path more lately- and the other day i kind of had a little vent session with my friend who i admitted to i was frustrated with my work and scared for my future. i feel like i’m being pulled in two directions- i was originally always aiming to do something in like the medical or psychology field but,,, i always indulged the idea of doing art for a living and being a concept artist,,, i don’t know what i want yet but this videos timing was perfect !! i’m trying to solidify my ideas of these two paths and i really didn’t know where to start TT
Going into my final year of Illustration at University, hearing that I should specialise in EITHER character or environment was a godsend just because I've recently been trying to do both and not focussing my full effort into either. As someone who is more confident with environment, I feel like I am going to spend my time and all my effort into developing that skill to hopefully have an interesting portfolio by the end of my degree.
As always, a good content and a 0% percent waste of time, again i want to congratulate you for reaching 1 million subbies! A public discrod would be cool! Thanks sir Marc!
This video is so perfect for me, thank you! I'm literally doing concept art right now as my personal investigation in graphic design and you're my main inspiration. You helped me improve my art and concepts so much
Hey Marc! I decided to start pursuing concept art as a career two years ago and you were one of the first artists I found through your Chroma island series. Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to take the step! I am finishing my master's in concept art and illustration in July and I am so close to making my dream come true after so much work, and a huge part of it was your videos!! On another note, one thing I have noticed is that actually the level of polish people expect from concept art is rising radiply due to having so much competition. So it is true that it's not to the point of illustrators, but I think it's still sooo much more polished than what I had expected at first coming into concept and hearing that for the first time. But I guess that's fair, it's about who is skilled enough to give the most in the smallest amount of time.
You helped me so much with your tutorials I was in school when I started watching you, now I finally actually got a position in a games studio where I make concept art & illustrations everyday!
@@silver7706 I went to a local games conference and those are great because theres always a board with "We Want You!" Concept art is quite a luxury thing in most studios these days with most just having a whole art department with specialists on certain things. I picked up a few of the papers and actually went around and asked about it cuz at the game conferences there was a lot of the studios present with a few people, truly a great place for first impressions and building up trust and relationships, in my case a studio called Ashborne games was rlly friendly and it was a lot of friendly people at Game Acess 22, a conference where I live, I contacted them, went on a interview and now I've been working for them in-studio for over 2-half wait almost maybe 3 months now time flies, a lot of places IRL or even sites like art station list a lot of open positions, I def. recommend to atleast give it a try, there's always a room for jobs and always a room for creativity! Good Luck on your art journey! :D
This is one of the most influential videos I have watched in a long time. So much information packed and now, I have a clear idea what I want to do. Thank you! ❤
I like these vids, it always nice to get more insight into the world and industry of art. I personally don't intend to make art a career, but it's still good to know.
Honestly Marc, perhaps the best thing to do when you're just starting out is to just pick one particular area to focus on and then build your skills in that area. Better than having to stress yourself out trying to balance learning too many things at once.
I've been going through really hard times rn, not just with my mental health but with my art in general as well,I've always loved the idea of creating concepts for characters, this is something I've always wanted to do, however I'm quite young so there's still so much ahead of me but this is a really good guide, coming from someone from that line of work makes this so much better You're a really big inspiration to me and I keep practicing everyday now,so thank you for inspiring me to start drawing again :) Kinda stuck in a bind rn because I got a new drawing tablet for my birthday but my parents didn't know that you needed a laptop to use it 💀 currently saving up again to get one 😂 but I continue to draw in my small little phone and my sketchbook, can't wait till I can create bigger pieces :)
I’ve been through the same thing drawing on my phone and not affording a tablet/computer combo when I was younger. I think it’s amazing that you have a niche to follow in art already, so you can think of the stuff you do on your phone/traditionally as good practice for what tablet drawing feels like. You are doing better than you think you are with these goals and I hope your mental health improves :)
@@breanna1959 thank you so much for the kind words,it's been really rough for me these past few years but I've been getting better and I'm getting into art again,I know it's really hard to draw on phones 😂 but sadly we can't afford it so it's better to practice and do better,I agree it's a good way to practice until you can get that equipment you've been saving for, usually I draw traditionally and then I go over it digitally using my phone.Thank you for the encouragement,I hope you have a wonderful day :)
This is why I’ve been studying your work religiously 😅 I wanna maybe work on OW or WOW someday😅. What better way to fast track my progress than learning from an industry vet.
thank you mark i totally appreciate the tips and advice. it was kinda stressful thinking of the ways to go about it and hearing you explain some ways really help. i truly appreciated the map because i live in the north east and didn’t think i had any possible opportunities around here... granted they still aren’t as good like jobs in cali and illinois but something is better than nothing and i’m glad i have these options to exploit thanks to you. you have a great life sir!

I started taking art classes this month and will be a student for a while, mostly in hopes of improving my art skills and learn whatever I can to expand my knowledge and abilities. Once I've advanced enough I hope I can come to you for some further guidance in being a concept artist 😁👍
10 years into my art journey and watching 3 and a half minutes into this video I'm realizing that I've tried to be both an illustrator and a concept artist and maybe that's why I occasionally struggle with certain aspects of both
What a coincidence! I am making concept art for a game right now. It's not a paying gig, more like just some fun with my bros, but it feels good to get some experience! Thanks for the tutorial, and for the ArtSchool. This discount makes me wish I waited to buy the course 😅

Ive been working a ton on my fundamentals (finally bought your full course a few months ago hehe) and i still plan to while i attend the school. Sorry if thats long-winded lol.
i want to do the exact same thing! Im currently first year architecture student but ive always wanted to become a concept artist, and my desire has only grown whilst taking this course
but honestly architecture is soo time consuming and also very long winded so only take it if it interests you. however i think the course will help give you skills for concept art as you will be drawing a lot of buildings!
u do such great work... I used to play WoW @ one time but have since moved on. But I am loving watching your work and am learning a ton.... though I am still getting the cofidence to go from tactile media to the digitalpad =) . Your videos help with that!!!
I have wanted to be a concept artist since I first laid eyes upon the concept art from Metroid Prime, my first real inspiration and I have just recently at 31 figured out what art style I like. I have barely really touched too much actual conceptual art. I went to college for traditional art and I learned almost nothing other than what I already knew (like using references and doing studies). But I squandered that chance and relationships got in the way. If there is one thing I learned that in college, relationships (other than mutual or friendship) can wait.
Honestly want to try and move away from game programming and get into the art design etc 😅 sooo I have no job currently and figured I’ll give this artschool a shot lol hopefully itll be what I need 👌
Man i just graduated high school and now I'm so lost on what to pursue. I wanna be rich and be a entrepreneur but i really love art and have a passion on it than anything else. I'm so lost now.

Last year in the spring I got into drawing and I’ve been following Marc 1 year art challenge and I have been seeing improvement. However I have been considering becoming a concept artist but I’m stuck in this weird situation where I’m in college almost done with my BA in biology and I found my passion in art but I also do enjoy biology but I don’t see myself being a doctor or going into the medical field, research etc. I tried the teaching career but I realized secondary education is not for me. So I’m stuck idk what to do. I want to finish my BA in biology cause I’m almost done like so close and deep down I want to pursue concept art career. I know it’s two different worlds hahaha

Just joined your Art School for Digital Artists 2022 right after watching this video! I will be a character concept artist. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experiences, Marc.
Wow! Good luck!
wow japan, that's gonna be hard but let us know if you succeed please!
Bro, stop reading my mind out of the things that I need!!! (and absolute thanks for the class!)
Just signed up to Art School! Been subscribed for 4+ years and have always appreciated all of your videos. I never took the leap before and finally feel like its the right time. Thank you for the content Marc!! 😌
Appreciate the time you've taken to share these deets!! I've prolly played as characters you've created over the years lol
YES YES YESSS!!! Thank you for this video!! I’ve been wanting to be some sort of artist in the creative industry for all my life and watching this video has really helped me lean more towards learning how to grow as an artist and hopefully be a concept artist one day ! Have a great day man you’re the best
Thx for the advice
I hope I'll be able to keep pushing and achieve my goal!
0:13 I'm curious to know everything you say observing even the shiney reflection on your head
Going into my final year of Illustration at University, hearing that I should specialise in EITHER character or environment was a godsend just because I've recently been trying to do both and not focussing my full effort into either. As someone who is more confident with environment, I feel like I am going to spend my time and all my effort into developing that skill to hopefully have an interesting portfolio by the end of my degree.
i just figured out a few weeks ago that this is my dream job so thank you for the perfect video!
Thanks for the vid marc really needed it
Thank you Marc for another upload!
You helped me improve my art and concepts so much
Thank you for the guide Marc you have inspired me to reach my dream of concept art or character design
This video was truly motivational. Thank you Marc!
Do you mind sharing how you found job openings?
I'm thinking of becoming animator without studying animation but now that I know concept artist I found what career should I pick❤️
Thanks man
This is one of the most influential videos I have watched in a long time. So much information packed and now, I have a clear idea what I want to do. Thank you! ❤
This video fills me with so much hope, thank you marc
teacher marc i just wanna say thank you for creating this channel you've been extremely helpful.
🎉🎉 glad u made this i was asking about this for a while
I like these vids, it always nice to get more insight into the world and industry of art. I personally don't intend to make art a career, but it's still good to know.
Honestly Marc, perhaps the best thing to do when you're just starting out is to just pick one particular area to focus on and then build your skills in that area. Better than having to stress yourself out trying to balance learning too many things at once.
Hi marc, thank you so much for making these videos, they halp sooo much. Also love the intros
This is fantastic! Wish I knew this back when I first started using photoshop to paint
Just used your code and plan on starting your course before I begin college in the fall. I am stoked!
Thanks so much!! welcome to ART School!! May the art gains be with you
Again, so many good points of this video. Thanks a lot for sharing the tips, Mr. Marc
I had just completed my application and portfolio for one of the only Concept Art graduate programs in Canada. Wish me luck everyone!
I've been going through really hard times rn, not just with my mental health but with my art in general as well,I've always loved the idea of creating concepts for characters, this is something I've always wanted to do, however I'm quite young so there's still so much ahead of me but this is a really good guide, coming from someone from that line of work makes this so much better
You're a really big inspiration to me and I keep practicing everyday now,so thank you for inspiring me to start drawing again :)
Kinda stuck in a bind rn because I got a new drawing tablet for my birthday but my parents didn't know that you needed a laptop to use it 💀 currently saving up again to get one 😂 but I continue to draw in my small little phone and my sketchbook, can't wait till I can create bigger pieces :)
ANOTHER CERTIFIED BANGER, this exactly what I was looking for!
Marc could you do a video related to shape design, shilouttes, gathering references etc for character design?
I think some good advice said by Alan Moore is, no matter what you make and publish, be proud of it.
Estoy muy agradecido por tus consejos marc, ya decidí elegir el concept art, comprare tu cursos de arte, quisiera mejorar alguna habilidades en la ropa y en las perspectivas 🙏☺
Thanks for the tips Marc!
Sup lil bro. It's you, from two years in the future. You got better at art. A lot better. You haven't made your move into a full art career just yet, but things are looking up. I'm glad you stuck with it.
Hi Marc, your video's are always incredibly informative! I would really love to see a video with a compilation of simple drawing excersises that you can do daily that help improve on fundamentals and constructive drawing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you for this video even though I’m 5 months late.
Lately I’ve been thinking of having a career in art and I’ve been interested in becoming a concept artist. Even though I’m still in high school I’ve considered to purchase your Art School after I get an IPad in the meantime I wait for my last two years to end.
I was literally just thinking this when this video came out thanks A lot
Thank you sm
This is so valuable ;n; maybe I won't make it fast but I will try my best
that's so great to see friends work on your video :D
Heyo, Marc! I was thinking of going into college for architecture so that i could hopefully support myself while trying to chase my dreamjob as a concept artist but I wanted to get advice on whether im doing the right thing or not.

Proud teacher moment... We are always proud to call you our mentor.💙💙💙
❤️❤️❤️
Youre amazing at art, this video is so helpful.
Very informative, many thanks Marc! Your vids and resources ( brushes, course etc) helped me a lot during the months as well!
I really need this, thank youuu 😭🙏
hi master marc fire intros as usual thanks for the video 😎🔥
get him back in the cage... 👀
u do such great work... I used to play WoW @ one time but have since moved on. But I am loving watching your work and am learning a ton.... though I am still getting the cofidence to go from tactile media to the digitalpad =) . Your videos help with that!!!
Bro u literally read my mind😭😭 thanks really
That technique you're using in this video, that's the one I'm trying to learn and cant find anywhere
Thank you so much! I needed this
I have wanted to be a concept artist since I first laid eyes upon the concept art from Metroid Prime, my first real inspiration and I have just recently at 31 figured out what art style I like.
As someone who is aiming to become a concept artist that works for a company...the timing of this video is impeccable👌
This is amazing! Thank you so much for giving such good advice!!!
Awesome video! I was just thinking about this yesterday.
Congratulations for one million subscribers
One of my friend from atomhawk studio once said, that studio has "no crunch" policy. Glad to hear about that
Yep, more studios should do the same so that it becomes standard!
I look up to you so much I wanna follow that career so much. Thanks for the information it was well needed
Great advice aside, I really liked the process you went through for those drawings. Gonna try it out some time
Your drawing is very beautiful
Thank you so much for the video 🙏🙏🙏
Honestly want to try and move away from game programming and get into the art design etc 😅 sooo I have no job currently and figured I’ll give this artschool a shot lol hopefully itll be what I need 👌
This is not an easy journey. It's too much questions and frustrations + the competition is fierce 🔥
Good video eighter way. Gl gl all
Thanks bro, that info will def help me in future 🙂
Man i just graduated high school and now I'm so lost on what to pursue. I wanna be rich and be a entrepreneur but i really love art and have a passion on it than anything else. I'm so lost now.
pretty good and informative video, any chance of an updated guide of becoming an illustrator? (not that the other wasn t good, but every information you give is precious)
Why am I getting excited over this I haven’t even started college yet, not even close
id love to hear more experiences in your job in blizzard! can you show projects you have made for overwatch?
I have a question regarding last part of Video !!
How to Find the Names of Junior Artists from any preferred Studio to find their Portfolio as you mentioned??
Thanks!
Thanks for the video!
