Study what you copied (study the fundamentals, learn more about what you just drew. anatomy? perspective? color theory? look into it, educate yourself, find the answers to the questions you likely had while copying) 3. Draw from imagination Instead of seeing and copying, you can observe better and take in more information and you have studied relevant theory, so you can construct drawings with solid structure instead of just copying. Repeat. When drawing anything for which you have more experience: News steps: 1. Construct what you observe (observing is more than seeing. there's an analysis to the process now since you know more about the theory. you can understand what you see better) 2. Study the fundamentals of what you observed (instead of copied) 3. Practice from imagination Repeat until Art God. Ez. State of mind (how good you are at focusing): MOTIVATION 1. Urgency: Well-researched fundamental of learning. Makes everything you learn stick a lot better. - Learn with the intent to teach. - Publicly announce you're working on a project - A bet - Setting a clear goal for yourself on schedule 2. Study DELIBERATELY - Study w/o distractions - You can have music on for creation process, but when STUDYING ART, no phone, no music, avoid all distractions - Study with structure (you need a curriculum to follow from simpler to more complex notions) 3. Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) - 80% outcomes caused by 20% of causes - 20% of theory allows you to create 80% of what you can imagine - So focus of learning and practicing what will give you the most results ART FUNDAMENTALS: - Construction - Perspective - Gesture - Anatomy - Design - Color and light theory - Composition - Storytelling Don't get lost of details that have very little impact on end result. Focus on few skills that will allow you to do the MOST. It's not always obvious what 20% of study will give you your 80%, but it's such an important thing to try to find out if you want to get better faster and working less. Often looks like ignoring extreme cases like complicated poses or perspectives in favor of subjects you are most likely to draw frequently, like neutral poses, simple perspectives, character construction and getting good at that first before moving onto more complicated things.
You take rlly good notes! I'D just like to add on what Marc said about copying. While copying, I suggest you write down all. Your questions as they pop in your head (eg. How do they get the glossy green eye look or how do they show so much depth in his drawing?) and at the end of your study, try to act like you are teaching the concept to someone else (feyman technique). I haven't tried this myself but I will, and I bet it'll work.
Unfortunatly the urgency one does not apply to me because I frequently freeze if I have this kind of demand, but the rest is great! Specially the observing techniques.
For me it is a sort of private time, and relaxation or meditation that grounds me. Part of what pushes me as well is the impact it has on others. So there is a ‘surprise’ element of revealing my art as part of the fun. So sometimes I like to be quiet about what I’m doing.
Yeah same, but have you tried smaller urgencies? seems to work for me. With monumental tasks I just go to play videogames. But I will easily spend hours if I want to "make a cool picture to show a friend".

Same. I wouldn't say my art is bad but its not nearly as good as it would be if I knew the fundamentals better, so I'm also trying to catch up on those finally

yesterday i was extremely frustrated with my work on my new tablet (learning digital) but once i took a break and listened to some of your videos i calmed down and am going to take a fresh look at that piece today :))
I've been in an art slump for a while now because I felt intimidated by all the things I needed to practice, but this video has really helped me understand what I need to do in order to improve! Thank you so much, I feel inspired again!
For me I've found when I structure things out I tend to do better in terms of staying focused I've also made a goal this year to try and complete one piece of fan art each month so I actually draw rather than just practice 24/7 and not draw. Even tho it's just February right now, I've felt from January to February I've already improved a fair amount. It's honestly one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences I've had with art
been planning on getting the ArtSchool course on cubebrush, just needed to sort things out to make myself tons of time for me to focus on ArtSchool, I've never been this dedicated to want to improve faster in art, thanks to you Mark and your Explosive-Bald-Head that I got this kind of inspiration, much love

I'm 21 and bought my tablet around the same time as you, I hope your journey goes great and you get to the skill that you love! How has it been for you so far? For me I have mostly been doing photo reference drawings but recently have been doing art of games I enjoy. I am just now trying to get back into studying with gesture drawing

I can't believe how fast time goes by when you enjoy things. This video was very informative and probably one of the best art tutorials I've seen in a while, and the way you describe things is so clear and good for keeping viewers loyal to your channel :)
When it comes to anatomy I force myself to "construct" the boxes first then place the landmarks, then connect them all. This way I can draw pretty much accurate to the subject especially I. Life drawing sessions. What I really try to avoid is to just "draw" I always end up with a deformed alien 👽

This is really helpful actually. I've recently realized that while I can draw hands very well from observation, when I get to drawing my characters, I can't seem to imagine anything well... Even though I've watched your construction videos! This video showed me that I forgot to practice just drawing hands from imagination rather than references! Thanks Marc, I'll try this out in my studies! ...Though the whole "No listening to music" while studying thing might be a rule I cannot follow. 😔
I have more respect for you as an artist than any other artist/teacher I've met, because you gave me the one thing no one else would/could. When asked 'how do I get better and what should I do to improve' you provided an actual answer instead of just saying practice for the millionth pointless time! You gave answers on 'what' to study and better yet 'how' to go about studying and practicing. Thank you sir for actually giving a 'real' answer, been following your stuff and improving bit by bit but I'm noticing improvement and that's changed everything for me! Also there's no puffed up arrogance about technique or other fluff/junk no one cares about when they just want to learn how to improve at drawing to have fun.

After drawing from a reference, I been identifying what mistakes I made, keeping those in mind I redraw the reference and it comes out much better the 2nd time usually

6:01 That's true. I try to learn a topic, and then create a tutorial on it (for myself only). This then lets me analyse my weak points on said topic too.

This apply in everything, awareness is the fundamental piece before starting to work on something because it is what provides us with good ideas and vision
I can testify for this my dudes.. Back when I was still early in digital art, I had this idea in my head that "More practice = improvements" but as I grew with digital art I realized that isn't completely true by doing excessive amount of hours on practicing you will be more prone to exhaustion and burn outs rather than improve and get better and now i practice less but with references to build up my visual library and started to notice huge improvements and that help me a lot and hope for you too my dude💗😗👌...most of this I learned from meeting different artists and from marc's videos.
I can’t draw from imagination but it’s much easier to draw from reference. I thought it was my bad memory. But now I feel inspired to work on this. Thank you!

Your right. I should study the specific parts of art that I want to use to create things. I should dedicate time to specifically faces instead of practicing only basic shapes even if I can't draw those shapes very well yet. I would also love to hear any suggestions anyone has for someone completely new

I needed this video. I’m so glad I’ve found it. I’ve been writing stories since middle school but this one I wanted to make into a webtoon or something of the sort, but my drawing is subpar.
As a small beginner artist This is just an amazing way to improve.I struggle with ADHD and this is actually really helpful! Even tho focusing, observing and studying the subject im observing is really hard for me,yet i try my best and i can see how can i improve using this! Tysm :>
When im drawing characters for example,heres what i like to do: -make 1-3 iconic traits of the character (for example:female,knight armor,giant sword) -from the traits/iconic things,create the rest of the character,like body type or personality -close your eyes,focus,and allow your mind to "print" the image on your eyelids -recreate what you saw -draw the same character in different poses/perspectives -add detalils and colors -done
i am so glad to have seen this and it just puts app my instinct of what i do naturally into words and tidies up my head with "yes you are right to do that"
I unconsciously did that for the past 2 weeks I've been trying to re-learn art (coz u know life sucked and didn't touched a single art-related stuff for the past 10 years) and managed to improve myself more than I ever did for those years I was doing it.
I'm literally worried rn cuz my skills aren't great and i choose animation as my course in college...whenever I see my friends create their artworks I always feel down and I feel like I'm being left out... as watching this video I realize that I have a long way to go to become an art god i hope one day my dream to be an animator or illustrator will come true...

Marc can you please make a video on using the selection tools(how you use lasso) and clipping masks. I've been practicing anatomy for a while and as I am trying to move to shading , it's taking too long to even select the character to start shading. Or the end product is very jagged at the outline of characters.I don't know how many people would really want a video on this though.

I want to become an animator and im going to start trying to get there when I get into college in the next 6 months or so, and that urgency has seriously helped. Like it’s the “I don’t wanna embarrass myself when I get onto the course and I’m shit” 😭😭 I’ve been practising for over an hour everyday, sometimes over 2 hours! It’s been 82 days since I’ve started but even after watching this video I’m still really confused on what to do. I know I’ve gotten better but I’m still really struggling with a plan. I wanna draw humans specifically so I’m planning to practise bodies and body poses, facial expressions and facial structures, hands, but that’s all I’ve planned. 😭😭👋

I've always loved art/drawing/making things, but like so many others my passions were put on the back burner while I put myself in massive debt getting a degree so I can get a 'real' job. Maybe three weeks ago I decided to try drawing a portrait even though I've always been pretty uncomfortable drawing faces, and drew a pretty decent looking portrait of Salvador Dali. Then that night I drew a detective from my wife's favorite show, then my wife's favorite singer (without guidelines), then a generic face based on nothing but a little white bust I 3d printed. Now I've been switching back and forth between hands and trying to draw faces with different emotions/from different angles, from imagination, while listening to you/Proko/others and I'm blown away with the progress I've been making. I kind of feel like I wasted these past ~10 years, imagining where I could be if I put this effort into my art right out of high school. Your videos make me feel like I could actually, eventually, make a living off of my art. I'm now looking for local in-person art classes (I think I would learn better that way); but if I don't find anything I like I might try your art school! Thanks a lot for the help and inspiration!
I clicked on the video as I have been learning how to draw since the start of this month and I found it funny I did the 'Art of Learning Method' as stated in your video already by accident. The only thing I added to the process (which can be applied to all steps) is 'finish the pieces you make'. Been noticing that when I mentally get stuck on something, instead of fixating on it for hours, I rush it and just try to finish it. Getting stuck on one thing got me furious at the start, but I noticed that skipping it and re-trying it on a fresh drawing often had way better results in the drawings I ended up making, showing off way more progression. Still far off actually being good at drawing, but just wanted to share what I have noticed experiencing these beginner steps before seeing the video, showing off maybe a different perspective that helps other people with similar struggles.

Thank you sir for actually giving a 'real' answer, been following your stuff and improving bit by bit but I'm noticing improvement and that's changed everything for me! Also there's no puffed up arrogance about technique or other fluff/junk no one cares about when they just want to learn how to improve at drawing to have fun.

After drawing from a reference, I been identifying what mistakes I made, keeping those in mind I redraw the reference and it comes out much better the 2nd time usually
1. Contruct what I observed -> study from what I observed -> practice from imagination.
2. Practice diliberately and with Urgency
3. practice 80% of what is important.

6:01 That's true. I try to learn a topic, and then create a tutorial on it (for myself only). This then lets me analyse my weak points on said topic too.

This apply in everything, awareness is the fundamental piece before starting to work on something because it is what provides us with good ideas and vision
I can testify for this my dudes.. Back when I was still early in digital art, I had this idea in my head that "More practice = improvements" but as I grew with digital art I realized that isn't completely true by doing excessive amount of hours on practicing you will be more prone to exhaustion and burn outs rather than improve and get better and now i practice less but with references to build up my visual library and started to notice huge improvements and that help me a lot and hope for you too my dude💗😗👌...most of this I learned from meeting different artists and from marc's videos.
I can’t draw from imagination but it’s much easier to draw from reference. I thought it was my bad memory. But now I feel inspired to work on this. Thank you!

Your right. I should study the specific parts of art that I want to use to create things. I should dedicate time to specifically faces instead of practicing only basic shapes even if I can't draw those shapes very well yet. I would also love to hear any suggestions anyone has for someone completely new

I needed this video. I’m so glad I’ve found it. I’ve been writing stories since middle school but this one I wanted to make into a webtoon or something of the sort, but my drawing is subpar.
As a small beginner artist This is just an amazing way to improve.I struggle with ADHD and this is actually really helpful! Even tho focusing, observing and studying the subject im observing is really hard for me,yet i try my best and i can see how can i improve using this! Tysm :>
When im drawing characters for example,heres what i like to do:
-make 1-3 iconic traits of the character (for example:female,knight armor,giant sword)
-from the traits/iconic things,create the rest of the character,like body type or personality
-close your eyes,focus,and allow your mind to "print" the image on your eyelids
-recreate what you saw
-draw the same character in different poses/perspectives
-add detalils and colors
-done
i am so glad to have seen this and it just puts app my instinct of what i do naturally into words and tidies up my head with "yes you are right to do that"
I unconsciously did that for the past 2 weeks I've been trying to re-learn art (coz u know life sucked and didn't touched a single art-related stuff for the past 10 years) and managed to improve myself more than I ever did for those years I was doing it.
I'm literally worried rn cuz my skills aren't great and i choose animation as my course in college...whenever I see my friends create their artworks I always feel down and I feel like I'm being left out... as watching this video I realize that I have a long way to go to become an art god i hope one day my dream to be an animator or illustrator will come true...

actually i repeat video like this to clear and focusing my mindset more when im practice my drawing,, listening to music gave me wild imagination,, while video like this make my brain calm,,. it's been 2 & half years i start drawing,, the first youtub art teacer i follow is you,, great content,, unluckily i cannot afford your art class, (not yet), 😅
Although I have been walking practically since I was a child I think it started two years ago when I began to take this more seriously since before I used to just copy what I saw and not so much learn, thanks to this video and several I met I feel that finally I am finding a good course for what I want to do, thank you very much Marc

I've been practicing anatomy for a while and as I am trying to move to shading , it's taking too long to even select the character to start shading. Or the end product is very jagged at the outline of characters.I don't know how many people would really want a video on this though.

I want to become an animator and im going to start trying to get there when I get into college in the next 6 months or so, and that urgency has seriously helped. Like it’s the “I don’t wanna embarrass myself when I get onto the course and I’m shit” 😭😭 I’ve been practising for over an hour everyday, sometimes over 2 hours! It’s been 82 days since I’ve started but even after watching this video I’m still really confused on what to do. I know I’ve gotten better but I’m still really struggling with a plan. I wanna draw humans specifically so I’m planning to practise bodies and body poses, facial expressions and facial structures, hands, but that’s all I’ve planned. 😭😭👋

I've always loved art/drawing/making things, but like so many others my passions were put on the back burner while I put myself in massive debt getting a degree so I can get a 'real' job.
Maybe three weeks ago I decided to try drawing a portrait even though I've always been pretty uncomfortable drawing faces, and drew a pretty decent looking portrait of Salvador Dali. Then that night I drew a detective from my wife's favorite show, then my wife's favorite singer (without guidelines), then a generic face based on nothing but a little white bust I 3d printed.
Now I've been switching back and forth between hands and trying to draw faces with different emotions/from different angles, from imagination, while listening to you/Proko/others and I'm blown away with the progress I've been making. I kind of feel like I wasted these past ~10 years, imagining where I could be if I put this effort into my art right out of high school.
Your videos make me feel like I could actually, eventually, make a living off of my art. I'm now looking for local in-person art classes (I think I would learn better that way); but if I don't find anything I like I might try your art school!

I clicked on the video as I have been learning how to draw since the start of this month and I found it funny I did the 'Art of Learning Method' as stated in your video already by accident.
The only thing I added to the process (which can be applied to all steps) is 'finish the pieces you make'. Been noticing that when I mentally get stuck on something, instead of fixating on it for hours, I rush it and just try to finish it.
Getting stuck on one thing got me furious at the start, but I noticed that skipping it and re-trying it on a fresh drawing often had way better results in the drawings I ended up making, showing off way more progression.
Still far off actually being good at drawing, but just wanted to share what I have noticed experiencing these beginner steps before seeing the video, showing off maybe a different perspective that helps other people with similar struggles.
