    Hey guys, if you are working on brakes, putting new brake pads or rotors you will need to compress the brake caliper piston. It could be done without a tool but we would not recommend it. The tool is very inexpensive and it is really easy to use. We demonstrated how to compress the caliper piston on front and rear brakes as well. Most of the newer vehicles you have to turn the rear piston clockwise with the tool to compress it.

    I've been working on cars for 53 years and I have a professional grade kit similar to yours but I only use it when the piston must be turned when the piston is compressed. I find it faster and easier to just use a fast-action bar clamp or fast-action C-clamp. I could have had the piston compressed and the pads in in the time you took to get the piston compressed. And with speed clamps you eliminate almost all the turning of the screw. If you like, you can just put an old brake pad on top of the piston to make sure you don't push the piston in more than necessary but that's really not necessary. Sometimes, simple is better and sometimes special tools only make jobs harder.
    You shouldn't use petroleum-based greases on silicone seals and parts, including the piston boots. Lithium grease is petroleum based. Petroleum based greases (like lithium grease) can destroy silicone parts such as the piston boot. If you felt you must lubricate the boots, a very light coating of silicone grease would have been better - perhaps spray silicone. The lithium grease you put on the boots can not only eat away at the boots but it will also attract and hold the very dirt that you are trying to get rid of. Thick greases of any kind on the boots are a very bad idea. One more thing: I don't know about spraying brake cleaner on the boots. I use it to clean brake disks and drums and brake pads, shoes, and all kinds of things (it makes a great gun cleaner!) but it's pretty harsh and probably shouldn't be used to clean natural rubber or silicone or anything of that nature. I just wipe the boots clean.

    Before compressing the brake piston, open the brake fluid reservoir, leave the lid placed on the reservoir but loose so air can come up and fluid easier return from the lines up the reservoir, that way the pistons will have not the air pressurized in the reservoir increasing pressure against you compressing the pistons but the compression will be 50% easier!

    It doesn't look as if the rewind tool was necessary on the front calipers - On rear brakes with a worm screw then I'd say yes since the piston adjusts to compensate for the handbrake - Some are right hand thread and some are left hand thread and you have to align the grooves to match the backplate of the pads such as on my Skoda and other VAG vehicles - On my Skoda front brakes I simply used a G cramp keeping it central to the caliper piston as I wound it in.

    Two things. This tool is generally used to compress rear disk brake calipers because they have to be rotated as they are compressed. It can be used on the fronts as well however a C-clamp is generally quicker for the fronts. The second thing is go back and look at your video where you are using the tool. Do what you are doing here and I'll guarantee your brake hoses will need to be replaced in short order. You are using hangers to take weight off the hoses but they you bend it so tightly that you're going to break it for certain.

    I’m trying to use this tool kit to push the piston back in for my 2016 Polaris slingshot sl. Everything was working fine until I dismounted the caliper to replace the break pads. Once I changed the break pads the piston came out and is not letting me push it back in with the tool set. Idk what to do I’m not a car guy I already tried using this set and releasing the break fluid thing too. The set fits good but I can’t turn the knob. Idk if it’s too hard or if something else is stoping it from turning

      @@THEREALRICK28 turns out the hand break is what caused the piston to come out. I used the tool in the video to lock it back in place.

    I have a question: If your caliper doesn't need to be turned while pressing how do you use the tool? Or is the adapter just rubbing on the "caliper" when turning it?

      It still goes in- just won't turn the piston is all. Slowly does it.

      He used the wrong adapter. There is an adapter that looks like three metal discs welded together. This adapter should be used for front pistons that are hollow inside. The adapter should not rotate on the piston.

    When I want the brake caliper to face me at an angle so easier to work on, is it ok to just turn it by hand with car off? Or need to start the car and turn the steering wheel ?

    he used a wrong disc. He should have used the one with flat surface. This caliper is a press-in style, not a screw-in style.

    NEVER use a petroleum grease on these boots and seals. It breaks them down and causes them to swell. Silicone based only- same for guide pins. Less is more. I always remove the lid on my master cylinder before doing this. Some open the bleed valve but that gets messy. Cleaning the bracket rust, hub rust and replacing hardware pins correctly is key. No grease on pads.

    Actually you picket wrong attachment. Two tabs is for rear calipers. For front there is one without tabs but with flat stop. It is important

      Tony Delacruz why would there be air in it? When you wind back the brake fluid gets pushed back to the reservoir

      the one caution he did forget is if you have a full brake fluid reservoir and you push the pistons back the fluid behind them has to go somewhere and it will sometimes overflow the brake reservoir and pop the cap open leaking into the engine compartment as well as leaving the brake fluid reservoir uncapped

      You only try to remove air when you have replaced a brake line or the caliper. Otherwise, there is no air in the caliper.

      Nah you aren't... fail on your part. You may need to remove some fluid from the reservoir however so it doesn't overfill.

      @@crocodile2006 Why would you have to do that? The fluid has gone down during the wearing of the old pads. You just have to remove fluid if you, at some point, filled up the fluid with worn pads.
