The Canon 24mm Lens: An Unpopular Opinion

- There's a lot you can do with lens, but it also has some pretty hefty downsides.
1 - It only natively fits onto APS-C lens cameras. This has its own downsides.
1a - 1.6x Crop Factor: It's not actually a wide angle with the crop factor considered. The equivalent focal length is 38.4mm, which is really a portrait focal length.
1b - Restricted to APS-C cameras: this means if you ever purchase a full frame camera, you can't carry this lens over to it. However, there are speed-boosters that would probably allow it to work.
1c - Low light capabilities: A lot of the APS-C cameras out there already have some issues with low light, and this lens doesn't help. The truth is, it lets in more light than the kit lens, but not much. If you are looking for a low light capable lens, I'd recommend going with something else.
2 - Vignetting: the corners slightly darken compared to the rest of the image. This isn't a problem for me - since I typically vignette my photos and videos anyway. But, something to keep in mind.
3 - No focus hard stops: when you manually focus the lens, it doesn't have a hard stop. This means that when it reaches the min or max of the focus, the ring on the lens just keeps going. This makes it hard to tell where you are with focusing on the lens.
4 - No weather sealing: this may not be a big deal to you - but just keep in mind that this lens is not weather sealed.
It's still a good lens though!
I use it on vacations - the 'pancake' form factor is makes it a great camera to just throw in your pocket or travel bag.

Do any of you have this lens? Let me know what cool stuff you've done with it! It's got some flaws, but most things do at this price range.
I have never used a pancake lens that satisfied my need for good optics. And I have tried many of them across different platforms. I guess it's the physics of directing light with such little distance to work with.
Dang. Yeah I bet you're right. I guess it's either 'good lens' or 'small lens' for now
Even on a crop sensor camera, an f/2.8 lens will still let in 2.8 worth of light. Where are the crop sensor affects it is in the depth of field. As far as the depth of field is concerned, the lens will act as an f/4.5, but the amount of light coming in will still be a f/2.8.
That's a good thing to note! Still the field of view is so much smaller which is the biggest downside for me
You can use it with canon film slrs to use it as a full frame lens.
It’s short and quite important topic it helped me … thank You for the video
I’ve used it for video on my 90D. The STM is fast with focusing and quiet. But, my 50mm USM f/1.4 is sharper. I don’t have any complaints for what the lens costs. It also works well enough on my C100 MKII.
That's awesome! Yeah autofocus with it is good. I'm not a fan of manual though. Yeah honestly you can still get some really good shots with it. Just doesn't fit the role of a 'wide' lens for me personally!
Best lens imo, besides the nifty fifty, use it for almost everything. Even for my short movie
I bought it a weeks ago and I hate it on my 650d...
Shoot!! Sorry to hear that. Yeah it definitely has its downsides.
You are so WHINY.
Lololol fair
