The Canon 24mm Lens: An Unpopular Opinion
There's a lot you can do with lens, but it also has some pretty hefty downsides.
1 - It only natively fits onto APS-C lens cameras. This has its own downsides.
1a - 1.6x Crop Factor: It's not actually a wide angle with the crop factor considered. The equivalent focal length is 38.4mm, which is really a portrait focal length.
1b - Restricted to APS-C cameras: this means if you ever purchase a full frame camera, you can't carry this lens over to it. However, there are speed-boosters that would probably allow it to work.
1c - Low light capabilities: A lot of the APS-C cameras out there already have some issues with low light, and this lens doesn't help. The truth is, it lets in more light than the kit lens, but not much. If you are looking for a low light capable lens, I'd recommend going with something else.
2 - Vignetting: the corners slightly darken compared to the rest of the image. This isn't a problem for me - since I typically vignette my photos and videos anyway. But, something to keep in mind.
3 - No focus hard stops: when you manually focus the lens, it doesn't have a hard stop. This means that when it reaches the min or max of the focus, the ring on the lens just keeps going. This makes it hard to tell where you are with focusing on the lens.
4 - No weather sealing: this may not be a big deal to you - but just keep in mind that this lens is not weather sealed.
It's still a good lens though!
I use it on vacations - the 'pancake' form factor is makes it a great camera to just throw in your pocket or travel bag.

    Even on a crop sensor camera, an f/2.8 lens will still let in 2.8 worth of light. Where are the crop sensor affects it is in the depth of field. As far as the depth of field is concerned, the lens will act as an f/4.5, but the amount of light coming in will still be a f/2.8.

Sometimes if i switch the ISO to 200 and take a picture it'll correct the green tint issue. Then switch back to auto iso and it's fine. About every 5th time i turn it on and take a photo they come out green. Anyone else having this issue? Canon support said "bad sensor/motherboard, buy a newer camera" .... • @_jacob.brownn
      @_jacob.brownn ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm that's fair. Depends what kind of photography I guess - but still would say there are better 1st photography cameras in this price range. The bad autofocus also affects photography when not using the viewfinder, and if you want to use a monitor for photography you'll have issues, but yeah other than that the rest is video downsides. Definitely a good point though.

    • @michaelgatheringdust
      @michaelgatheringdust ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_jacob.brownn Thanks! Coming from 35mm and medium format film photography, the idea of using a sensor as opposed to a viewfinder is very foreign to me. But I never had a problem with autofocus, perhaps because, in the film world autofocus was a rarity and even the T3i's autofocus seemed magical in comparison! I got my T3i in 2012 new. Unfortunately a year or so later I had to stop photography due to a (misdiagnosed) hand problem. Finally, years later I got a proper diagnosis and the correct surgery and the hand is back. SO I pulled my old T3i and various lenses out of storage. First thing I did was a shutter activation count - 2340 activations! Basically a new T3i. To make a longer story shorter, I got the wildlife/bird bug so got an R7 with the RF100-400 for wildlife and the RF24-105 for more general use when out with the R7. I use my T3i for wide angle/landscape type work with my 10-18EF-s and a 24 f2.8 ef-s (when I want a bit more aperture). I still have the original 18-35 and 55-250 I got with the T3i and they come in handy from time to time as well. The results from the T3i are quite beautiful, in some cases bettering the R7 using a EF/EF-S to RF converter for those wide lenses. Sometimes packing too many pixels into an asp-c sensor can bring its own issues and 32.5MP is pretty well packing it in! GREAT for wildlife, action etc but for the more contemplative wide angle/landscape shots I like the T3i look/feel more. It is a bit closer to the film feel. It is also nice as a street camera since, at worst, I am at risk for a much cheaper setup than the R7! Anyway, thanks again for your reply. It was more polite than my initial comment! LOL

    A commenter on another video featuring this camera mentioned that Canon still supports it and released a firmware update that enables it to be used as a Webcam. Which means the information on the HDMI out feed is eliminated. I just purchased one on EBAY and plan to find out once it arrives. Question. Can the focus be locked? I want to use it as a tripod mounted top down camera for filming art videos. I have a M50, but I'm tired of having to take it off the tripod to access the SD card. Which is in the battery compartment on the bottom. I like the side mounted SD card location on the t3i.

      Hi Sentry! Yes, I actually use the t3i as my work webcam, and it's great! But it will only support the clean HDMI out on their own software as far as I can tell. For focus locking, yes! Since it doesn't autistic continuously, just focus it once and don't worry about it, or turn the lens to manual if you want to be safe. And yes, I LOVE the side tray for the SD card!! My T6 with the bottom tray was super annoying

    would this work for me to take pictures of my art to make art prints?

      Of course! Scanning on a HQ scanner may work better but this would for sure work

    Thanks for the review! Anyone with comparable camera alternatives with clean hdmi out, continuous autofocus that doesn't break the bank?

    • @_jacob.brownn
      @_jacob.brownn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course! Personally, my next favorite is the Canon 70D. It has clean HDMI out and continuous autofocus. It's also pretty cheap, but more than this camera for sure. I got mine on eBay for like 300 if I remember right!

      Depends on your needs! That may be better for you. I think that may be a little pricier? I don't know a ton about that camera

      Very true! You can get a lot out of an old camera if you know what you're doing. But it usually takes a lot more time and effort too!

    Everyone keeps depending on AUTO FOCUS. Beginners, listen up, AUTO FOCUS will NOT land you a job in the industry because they DO NOT use this feature. It's best if you learn manual and you buy a camera that is mainly manual and not dependent on AUTO FOCUS. It is a nice feature to have but do not base your entire work on this feature. 0:53 He said it's the *number one* issue but it is no where near the *number one* issue or even a problem because *professionals* do not use this feature. The camera is still EXCELLENT for beginners. I've shot tons of videos with that camera before.

      Hi Stealth Star, I guess it depends where you are coming from! If you want to be a DP or in film of any kind you are totally spot on. But if you just want to want TH-cam videos or short films personally, then I'd say this feature is very important. Not everyone has access to a camera assistant or focus puller, and even camera operators rarely pull their own focus. Honestly though I definitely put this one too high on the list either way!!

    Heyyy, i have a T3i, i love it cause it’s my first camera, but I want to upgrade, i thought it would be a nice idea changing to the Sony RX100 iv or v vi, to have more quality and portability, is it a good choice???

    i believe that the t3i indeed does have continuous autofocus; however, the nomenclature for that feature is ' focus lock'.

    • @_jacob.brownn
      @_jacob.brownn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess when I refer to continuous autofocus, I mean focus that is continuous throughout video, so yes a 'lock'! But in reality all autofocus during video on this camera is pretty useless!
