Thanks for watching. So I fixed the self propel on this mower but I might have just wasted my time on it.
This video is meant as entertainment, always practice safety. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I would replace it if it were my mower that I want to keep for years to come. But if I were fixing it to sell or on a budget, I would do what you did.
good choice
@HomeGaragechannel good Job at least you got the transmission working
Good work there .
Thanks 👍
Wow, this was a lot of work for you. This turned out to be very informative to your viewers like me. I would have been inclined to replace the transmission, but I would also have been afraid that there would be no profit left in it. And the process of removing all of that plastic baffling brought back bad memories of of a mid-2000's MTD self-propelled 21" rear drive mower. I had to replace a few belts and 1 or 2 idler wheels in the rear drive system, and each time it involved a lot of similar effort to remove the plastic pieces.
thank you and yes having to replace the idlers is a real pain on that model
Excellent repair! I used to save self propel parts when the deck was rotted out, but after seeing the various styles, sizes, etc, I stopped holding onto them. I just cut out the broken trans and make it a pusher lol. I don't usually get many with a dead trans, it's usually belts or cables my way. I do have one with a busted self propel; the axle broke and you can pull it out of the trans on one side lol
taking them out works too but that's a lot of work sometimes
I ended up doing this sometime or other and I started taking stuff loose till I was worn out and then had to keep on going. What it was on I have no Idea but I finally got it fixed and assembled after several naps and probably several days. Good fix with no slop and plenty of grease! Got to have grease. I usually used Snapper 00 grease but it's been renamed now but Tractor Supply carries it. 'Cotton Picker Spindle Grease' I think it's called now. Happy weekend!
thank you, I'll have to look it up
's thebit I found. You can get it online but if that's local you ought to be able to hit them up with that title and get it. I got 2 bottles and then gave everything away but I'm sure somebody can use it eventually. That's what Snapper used in all their old riders and gear boxes on the walk behinds.@@HomeGaragechannel
Doing an actual repair rather than a replacement... Is a good learning tool. Helps in later diagnoses. Always nice to have used replacement parts. My question... Do you use blue light duty lok-tite on your fasteners?
only on crucial engine fasteners
@@HomeGaragechannel makes sense. I developed the habit from riding old English motorcycles. Lol.
Dude I was just working on a Honda HRR 216 transmission and thought it was just one of the bushings that was seized on the shaft because it was rusted on the shaft but now I think it needs a new transmission. Man those things suck working on!!
Btw great repair!!
thanks and you are correct
yo bro I comment on a few different youtube acounts and sometimes give you a hard time cuz I like poking people lol. I just wanna say your youtube channel is great, and entertaining and it itches my mower autism and has really helped me become a better small engine flipper! thanks man!
hey I appreciate that a lot, thank you!
Yes I would have done the same thing you did awesome video thank you. I have a question for you same type of motor How do you set the Valves on that do you have a video for that if you Thank you for that
thanks and unfortunately seeing the valve lash on these is no small feat. I don't have a video on it because it requires the engine to be mostly if not completely torn down.
Nice job! All you need to reverse the drive gear is a simple everyday drift punch though, nothing special. I’ve done it a number of times in the past when I only had one type and needed the other. Problem is you have to remove the axle to slide it off and flip it around, so I’d do exactly what you did. That poor old Quantum sounds whooped, about the only way to kill them is to run them without oil.
I thought the same but I felt as though the pin was an interference fit and even thought the punch would have worked, I like the idea of the press better. And yes the engine is a bit knock but as long as it has oil, it'll last.
Don't need a press simply a punch the same diameter of the pin and a hammer
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
no problem
I may have made the same repair. I always consider time, money, and potential profit. Some machines are great candidates to part out and use for other projects.
you are so right about that
Thank You for Sharing
no problem
Good day Boy good video. Boy I seen mud fly up from back wheels when u put in drive.LOL

Recommendation answers “it depends.” It depends on if you are a cheapskate like you, and I am. If not, then the answer comes down to the cost of the parts and materials (and sometimes time).
There is a threshold and it is always moving because there is a second time variable. And this one is based on my situation at that moment related to the events currently happening and what is planned for the near and far future.
Like you, I would have tried the same repair process due to the cost of the transmission.
Again, thank you for your shared hobby.
well said and you make a great point
I would have done the long complicated fix. It is why I keep parts from things and if it meant this, it is the thrill of the repair that makes it fun.
well said
I briefly faced this question with my riding mower this past summer. I need a new transmission for it. Do I replace the old transmission or rebuild or get a new machine. I opted to replace the fluid, and come early spring after the snow melts and before mowing season, I'm replacing the transmission. In my case it was the initial cost of a new machine, plus the attachment(s) that conveniently don't fit the older attachments I own. What you did was just fine. yes you took a lot of time, but you got some good videos and made a lot of people happy.
thank you I appreciate that
Nice Fix!!!!
thanks
Can you do a video where you put that style engine on a different deck like a weed eater deck or something like that style
I can but I'll have to come up with the parts.
I have the same mower but mine is front-wheel drive. But I have a Husqvarna cz4817 zero turn with a Kohler command 17 its run fine since I've had it but now it runs for about 5 minutes and when I take the air filter off after using white smoke slowly comes out of the intake, started doing that yesterday and also I have to give it a little bit of starting fluid then it runs fine for about five minutes then slowly dies, has a new carburetor. thanks
sure thing, have you checked the oil lately?
@@HomeGaragechannel, I just saw your comment lol. When I got it it didn't run it had an oil leak from the exhaust, i looked up why and it said carburetor weird but ok. Then I drained the leftover oil came out watery but I put in new oil and new carb it ran fine for probably a month. Then did that so I stopped riding it for a while and I used it heavily for a job for a guy and ran fine. But it only starts if you give it just a little bit of starting fluid any ideas of why it starts with starting fluid? Thanks
Hey if it works why not! I would do the same for the ones that are getting sold. Especially if spare parts are in hand...Wish I could see it better how you adjust the speed on this motor I have this one too.
thanks and it's easy, Pull the tab forward that anchors the small spring to increase engine speed and push it back to lower it.
@@HomeGaragechannel right on! I'll give it a try. You're Channel is awesome and educational.
Since I've already done that before I'd say yes.
thank you!
As long as the repair will work out for you to get the money 💰 for this mower
well said
@@HomeGaragechannel yes it is
Sometimes you have to do the math and think about it. It's pretty easy to accidentally spend more than the value of the finished mower if you aren't careful. I try to avoid mowers with "loose" transmissions for that very reason.
Got a Snapper that had no tranny fill/breather plug and was full of leaves. Cleaned it out but had to get another pinion gear because the gear and bearing were shot. Worked fine till I had to get rid of it. Put a kawasaki motor on it instead of the Briggs. That was interesting. Ride that bike!
that's great advice!
very nice work!
Liked Snappers too much to give it up and give up on it. Still do as far as the old ones go.@@HomeGaragechannel
Good enough. Happy you're happy this neglected, worn out Toro is gone now.
you are correct
A repair that will probably outlast the mower!
quite possible
High satisfaction job.
agreed
That engine is going ratatatatatatatatatat
I'm retired so the last thing I want to do is spend money on a trans when I got parts in the backyard. But hey that's just me, if you want to do something different don't let me stop you but dont blame me if all gets too expensive for you and you're left hungry and in debt with a working self propel mower! 🤣
thank you I appreciate it.
Thanks for sharing great videos 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
Hey bro what's up? If it my own personal mower I would of definitely replaced the transmission on it. However, if I had a parts mower and it have a working transmission I would of used it on the working mower.
thank you for seeing it my way .
@@HomeGaragechannel you're welcome bro 👍
Is there something loose, or is the engine knocking?😅 i never replaces gaerboxes. They are mad expensive. Never under 100$.
there's a bit of knocking from the engine, but it's only a little.
so a local auto store should carry the bearing. I just replaced one that was locked up. cost me 8$ I think
I would just order the bearing online.
I have a 22" self propled Toro, about a year old, whose drive wheels KEEP FALLING OFF!
The bolt just comes loose..
...and the wheel falls off.
Any ideas? ANYBODY!
have you considered medium strength loctite
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks...I hadn't thought of that. Will get a tube the next time I go to Home Depot or Lowes. Thanks again.
Not replacing the drive belt was so silly
yes it was
I would have done what you did even if I was keeping the mower for a long time
thank you !
I would have done what you did…just rebuild it from a old one to start but if I would have run into more problems I would have just spent the money on a new one…
I think that's a good choice
I would've done what you did to save $$$s !
thanks
so are you the type of guy to tell the next owner you fixed the transmission yourself or are you the type of guy that doesnt mention it? I basically never disclose any previous issues to the next buyer
The channel owner probably disclosed the answer in one of the videos.
no I never disclose too much information, "the mower starts, runs, drives, oils been changed, air filter is new and Blade has been sharpened. Ready to mow."
I'm a cheapskate like you. I would probably try something similar to what you did.
nice!
I get what u are trying to say but when u sell a mower that was originally self-propelled, u simply say, "that feature no longer works which is why I'm selling it at such a low price." 💁
you make a great point. I'm selling this convertible car, as a non convertible because that feature no longer works which is why I'm selling it as such a low price.
