    Update: E3 Comparison video is live! th-cam.com/video/pKoT0fW8Aa4/w-d-xo.html
    Dying Light released in 2015* not 2016. "The Following" expansion release in 2016.
    Also, the "ray tracing" options are not nvidia specific as I incorrectly noted here. It appears DLSS is the only nvidia specific feature this time around.

      But that was the charm of Dying Light to begin with, toning it down kinda turned this into a Dead Rising type of game no more the terrifying real-life looking zombie apocalypse experience, imo they kinda shot themselves in the foot by doing that, the game lost its iconic charm to me, if i want a casual noob friendly zombie killing game i go for L4D2 ir something, if i want a zombie apocalypse "simulator" i go for DL1, DL2 to me kinda doesn't fit in either of those which is a shame, honestly part of DL that i loved was it had a trash story bad characters and uninteresting quests overall, but the gameplay and atmosphere made up for it, going in a volatile infested tunnel even during the day when you were "safe" sent chills down the spine, not to mention the first time you deal with the screamer or every single time you do because those things are unsettling every time XD, DL2 kinda lost a big chunk of what made it DL to begin with

    I feel like DL1 had this "vibe" that really captivated me, that DL2 just doesn't have. I think I enjoyed the "loneliness" I felt in the first one with how rare it was to find other humans around, along with the fear factor of the large amounts of zombies that were roaming around. The orange glow of the sunsets, the creepy atmosphere. The distant echoes of zombies screaming resonating through the quiet city. The ambient, slightly ominous music... It kind of felt like a dream sometimes.

      @victorjozek5384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      For me it's more about the colors and effects. DL1 offered a very paricular atmosphere, the sunset for example used very strong orange colors fading down into an obscur red, making it look like it's the end of the world. The night was filled with a lot of different tones of grey, the interiors full of strong dark colors, everything to remind you that death was slowly taking over the city.

      That was probably the first thing I noticed. In the original when I missed a swing it was because I had improper spacing, or I swung vertical as they went sideways. In the second one I could SWEAR I'm hitting them and sometimes my swings will simply not register as a hit. Even more infuriating when you're trying to swing at one that's charging at you only for it to miss completely resulting in you getting grabbed while everything in a 3 mile radius wails on you.

Moving this down to 2 made colors during the day, and darkness at night, pop a lot more significantly. I’m curious if these games default to a higher brightness for less technical casual players who might not think to go in and change them, giving them a less intimidating night time experience. having far less enemies in the streets at daytime is such an odd choice and makes me confused on what the developers were thinking. the big reason to why parkour is so valuable not only to the player but to all the other survivors is because of how the streets were packed with zombies all the time and it a layer of difficulty and tension, DL2 just feels so much more artificial in alot of weird ways that pull me out of the game and never really has that natural immersive quality that the first game did

    For me personally, it feels like dying light 2's graphics took a turn to be more cartoony than the first one, and the art style feels similar to the walking dead for some reason. And then for the parkour aspect, dying light 2 has more variety of moves you can do than the 1st one, but the parkour feels like it has no weight and this is so apparent when you jump from a high place to a trash pile/car because in dying light 1 you can feel the fall, but in dying light 2 it just feels like a normal jump. Flashlight casting shadows was considered one of the selling points of Doom 3 and The Chronicles of Riddick, released 18 years ago. It's mind-blowing that with all these ray tracing and brand new lighting techniques, we have actually kinda regressed back.

    • @Brown614
      @Brown614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      The issue with that is dynamic lights that are made by a char can cause massive performance decrease these days due to how much more detailed things are now. Especially in games with tons of transparency or a multiplayer game, it can cause even more issues. Those games didn't have much detail in the world itself like we are expected to have now.
      Ray tracing helps this out a lot, but it's not utilized here cause it's not fully adopted yet. We have definitely not regressed if you look at games that do utilize what we are capable of like metro exodus with it's enhanced ray tracing.

Art direction-wise I really liked the style of the first game, but the new style differentiates the series more from Dead Island's more dreary look. The number of zombies crowding the streets at night seems absolutely terrifying in the second game, where as in the first the focus was mainly the volatiles which felt more like you were being hunted down by unrelenting beasts - enhanced by the truly dark environment.

    I don’t mind the new lighting and coloring. Both games have their own style, reflecting their respective storyline. Dying Light tells the story of a desperate survivor surviving a brutal apocalypse. While this is still the case in Dying Light 2, the fact that it’s so far into the apocalypse allows the game to show the resurgence of life in the wake of the destruction. It really helps to accentuate the more stylized look the game seems to be going for, and is rather gorgeous.

The map is really dope in DL2 but, the colors, music, hud and the way the characters look is so much more cartoony/fantasy like. It’s not bad but, it’s a shift in tone from what I was expecting in a sequel. If you look at early e3 demos of DL2 you see how much better the colors pallet is and tone. Dying Light 1 definitely captured the theme of the game. Night runs were much more terrifying and overall the game was more difficult. So far, in Dying Light 2, it seems to be focusing on the rpg element more than the horror element. Plethora of safe zones, night runs are fairly simple, and the chase system takes away a lot. The first one, you knew volatiles were coming in any event you were seen. You could hear them screeching and howling all over the place when you were noticed. In the second game, you have to progress through the chase levels before you have to worry about them. Also, another eye glaring difference is the number of NPCs. In DL1, you rarely had encounters while exploring. It really felt like the infected had taken over and the streets were lifeless. In DL2, there's NPCs everywhere roaming around. Rather they are being attacked, attacking you, or just chilling near a fire, it seems like you are running into them everywhere and it takes away from the loneliness you felt in the first game that made the game even more terrifying. Dying Light 1 is much more in tuned with it's title.

    In DL 1 when you try to cut someone eg. Biters you can feel that it is solid as if you are trying to cut through the meat and bone of that biter. The biter stays there as you try to butcher it and when it cuts you can see in the gore that the cut is not a clean cut ( this only made sense if you have a normal damaging weapon and not the one cut man blade )
    In DL 2 you try to cut through biter and instead of you feeling like you're cutting through meat and bone it feels like you're cutting through with no trouble and the zombies recoils.

      In 2 the parkour is a lot more prevalent in the endgame (grappling hook isn't OP, but still super good), and the traversal is cranked to 11 as far as immersion goes. Long jumps, gliding, trampolines, everything plus the kitchen sink.
      Combat is a bit scaled back and simplified to a level system (rather than what the player has the balls for), and they adopted a weapon durability system where there is no repairing. There's also no guns (with a lame excuse), nor Be The Zombie, and no cars.
      2 still has that little bit of the easter egg and subtle goofiness that the first game had, but the soundtrack is a lot more lacking in direction. The first game was solid, techno synth type stuff with a Middle Eastern twist, consistent. 2's soundtrack is a bit all over the place, with some techno synth, orchestras, and a much more bass boosted tone. It's one of the smaller details, but it's part of the experience. It's still good music, just much more variable.
      Biggest thing for me personally is difficulty, 2 night time isn't any different from day time, really. No volatiles on patrol, it's bright enough to see without the flashlight, there's no real reason to be stealthy. It doesn't feel dangerous like the first game. 2 is also just easier in general, because there's a parry system, and like I said, it's simplified. Not only does it have a level system, enemy humans start to look like robots real quick, because they only spam like 2 moves and they all move exactly the same. The zombies are just like the first game.
      Overall, it's a fairly different game, but it still feels like Dying Light at its core. They did a good job at explaining the cliff hanger in a way that was satisfying, and they gave us a replayable adventure with branching paths. It's definitely not something to replace the first game with, but they can coexist just fine.

    There’s nothing like running out of stamina when 10+ volatiles are chasing you lol. That’s something the second game is missing, and I see all these comments talking about that. The ambience and tone of the first game is unbeatable. You truly do feel alone in a giant two part city. And in my opinion, I believe that the followings map is even creepier. I love the second game, and I think the story is even stronger, but the first game is unbeatable. I’ve gone through Dying Light 1 10+ times and i’ve 100%’d it 2 or 3 times so i’ve had my fair share of time with the game. I absolutely love this series, same with the Dead Island series. You're right. I just finished DL2, and honestly...DL1 is just better, and a lot more tense. The few new additions to DL2 don't make up for the things they took away. No guns, none of the cool drop down attacks (the "Stomp" skill sucks), the global traps, the guts cover system, the ultra populated zombie areas, like the big bridge...there's just so much missing. And while volatiles have come back in DL2, they are so damn tough that on the few occasions you DO encounter them, you're very likely to get ripped apart in 2 hits. DL2 needs a LOT of content that I don't think we're going to get to be on the same level as the first game. And you very rarely feel in danger at night due to the over abundance of easily accessible UV zones. Literally everyone has access to massive UV lamps and the electricity to power them for some reason. Instead of just having the large communal spaces like the Bazaar or PK ship, you can find a UV safezone within 100-150m in any direction no problem.

In DL2, there is almost no camera motion at all - even though the graphics have much higher fidelity, everything ends up looking just fake and lifeless. It does not look like parkour camera footage at all - they completely lost that Go Pro / Hardcore Henry feel of DL1. And I understand DL1 caused motion sickness for a lot of players - but they could have kept the realistic, confusing camera motion that made DL1 so immersive, and provided an accessibility option to turn it off. Is it just me or does hitting the zombies in DL1 feels more impactful with tangible stutters and has that crunchy feedback feeling and the zombies don't stagger easily and even pounce forward on you making it harder to slice them and even the kick has a bit of rumbling and vibration to it as it's impacting on the zombie. And when you fall from a high point, the wind speed sound increases and the camera shakes with blur as you're falling down. While in DL2, I dunno the combat feels more "game-ish" in a way, almost shallow as you're slicing air with minimal feedback and the zombies aren't as aggressive as the first game (it's like they're easy xp givers) and the kick is underwhelming with barely any rumbling feedback and there's no visible effect on screen as you're falling down, you just fall down with no wind or camera effect. And the graphics in DL1 have more "POP" to them, dark, contrasty, intense and atmospheric with that lens flare (aggressive lens flare from the sun as it blinds you and even from fire and electricity too), film grain effect and lite motion blur, you could really feel unease, tense and stressed out because you didn't want to go outside on the streets because there were hundreds of undead waiting around every corner and even crowded on the streets and open areas (like squares, intersections etc...). The graphics in DL2 lose that bit, no more film grain, no more contrasty atmospheric tension-filled look, no more lite motion blur and no more "fear of the zombies" feeling. It now has multiple layers of color (which is appreciated but strangely out of place since this isn't supposed to be a happy colorful world, this is still a zombie plague we're talking about here), you move and interact in a more "static" way if you get what i mean, there's no heavy movement with heavy motion (as a normal human being would have) like in the first game, the image is clean and clear with barely any visible aggressive effects for physicality (like how it flashes black and white when you get hit or fall down or how the weapon slice snap-rebounds off the zombie as the screen shakes).
    To me it seems that Techland made DL1 as the tough, grounded and physical zombie apocalypse game, but made DL2 as the shallow fun zombie Role Playing Game (that is different from what Techland set out to make with the first game)

    in the new game i can chill at night on roofs and not care about the night cause nothing can hurt me unless im at chase lvl 3

      To be fair, unless you were unlucky you could chill on a roof in the first game and be fine at night, and idk about you but I find the nights in DL2 scarier. First game, you got some flares or Survivor level 12 and escaping a chase or even avoiding them was cake, but its nowhere near as easy to do so in DL2. Plus, the night in the first game was kind of easy. Even Volatiles could be cakewalks with some flares, a UV light, and some patience, be you level 5 or Legend 250. The movement feels better to me in DL2, and the way the music builds as you string longer parkour combos and how Aiden hypes himself with it just feels so amazing compared to the first game.

    I feel like the combat has taken a step back in feel and animations. The zombies and humans don't seem to react as uniquely to being hit in certain areas as much as the last game. They way enemies react to physics in general seems to have taken a step back. The damage on their bodies(blood, broken/missing limbs) served as a better visual than the health bars imo. The way I felt like the player could strategically target certain body parts to have added effects seems to be all but gone as well. The attacks feel less weighted and crunchy with less of an impact, the absence of x-rays adds to this as well. Overall the combat feels much less strategic and brutal other than addition of the new moves. Which is a shame because that was one of my favorite parts of the original.
    Edit: The kick also feels much less effective and without it's weight as well at least early one.

    • @smirking8457

      DL1 had way more refinement and detail, in both the sound design and combat. For example - in the original Dying Light if you wanted to decapitate a zombie while they were on the ground it was best if you physically positioned yourself to the side of them, the game would intuitively recognize what you were attempting to do, and Crane would chop down vertically with a perfect swing.
      Just an experiment - try cutting the limbs off of fallen/dead zombies in the first game vs the second, and you'll immediately notice the difference. The combat was way more intuitive in DL1, at least in terms of fighting zombies. Also, a lot of the new combat maneuvers are just goofy. The stomp in DL1 was so raw and satisfying - in DL2 you jump in the air like a circus goofball and land on their head with both feet.

    • @samhein321

      The zombies behave differently, since ragdoll is only activated AFTER zombie is dead, they use animations instead during combat:
      at 2:48 during the DL2 footage, you can see the same animation is played twice (watch closely), when kicking the zombie at the roof.
      in DL1 the arms flail due to physics, here it's because it's animation, this is also why they don't slip off the roof
